Now I recall. It was Tongduchong. Many of the tailors and other merchants were moving from Itawon to Tongduchong since the cost of doing business in Itawon was sky rocketing. Now this tailor would meet me in Seoul and I would pay him. Who does that in the U.S. ? Another topic. I felt a little bad for those young Army GI's (Second ID) who would come down on certain weekends to visit the bars in Itawon. I can tell you that those juicy girls knew when leave time was kicking in and when the pay was coming. Then more girls would be working that night in the clubs. I knew all of this stuff since...well lets not discuss this. But, I can forward a power packed 33 page paper on "The Girls of Songtan"...great for the young novice who falls for the wiles of those lovely Asian ladies prying the pockets of GI's and others, including old geezers who have government contracts. I could never fully understand that whole routine. Anyone reading this, if you go to Korea do not fall for the buy me drink trip. One or two is ok, but then don't give your paycheck away ! Now this is not the standard martial arts fare, but places a perspective on the big and "other" picture of what goes on. Too bad many of those GI's did not visit the cultural areas and captivating countryside of Korea. But, I generalize since this was not the case for all military or other Americans who did take advantage of travel opportunities. I can't understand how anyone would not like Korea with all it has to offer excluding bars and clubs. See ya, Ken McD... P.S. I am sure you are aware that many clubs in Korea are "Korean" only and exclude foreigners. Chris, I just spoke with Gm Ji. He said that the TN seminar is scheduled for June 28-29. But at this point it isn't 100% that it is on. "Should everyone who trains adequately BE promoted if they meet the minimum requirements?" "Should examination requirements be adjusted for people with special needs? If so, where do you draw the line and what should you consider/not-consider for a special needs?" Lastly (sorry this is a lot o' questions), SPARRING for black belt ranks - I have some up-and-coming gup students who are deathly afraid of sparring. They spar in class, but are very hesitant due to fear of injury. If these students are great students and rock when they do one-steps, fundamentals, forms, etc....should they be held back as the go for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Dans, etc. due to poor (not "equal-to-average ability") sparring? <> Dear Master Boit, Yes,yes and No. My rule is that students must TRY every written requirement on the test (unless it's simply impossible like kicking for someone with no legs or in a wheel chair). If they meet all the time in rank, number of classes requirements and "look like failing" on one aspect of a test they still pass. I do hold a higher standard for Dan tests. Candidates must complete all the breaks they attempt, and must complete all their required hyung. Do I adjust exams/requirements for people with special needs, yes. For example standing front fall is a 6th gup requirement, however during class students may do the kneeling version until they become more proficient, but must TRY the standing version on the test. You will find that people will usually excel at one aspect of martial arts and be mediocre at another aspect (um-yang). As coaches we can but praise strengths and guide growth in weaknesses, neh? There are some benefits to it, but only as a training mechanism and not as a measuring device for fighting ability. It will only train you to be a good sparring person. If that's what you want to develop, go for it. She can't use her legs, but she is a good martial artist. My teacher has her do extra hand techs, or (if she feels up to it) has her "try" to raise her legs off of the foot pedals of the wheelchair. She is a wiz at forms. She does them almost perfect (minus the kicks) even with the fact that she has to move the chair with her hands (wheels). She's good. I ask her for advice on forms, because she knows what the "kicks" and forms are supposed to look like and she has a great eye for detail. She has helped me many times on technique. <<<>>> I used to be the same way in my old school. I hated sparring, and the instructor let me get away with not sparring (which isn't good). I had to spar for tests, but I sucked, and he still passed me. I know I did well in everything else, though. I was afraid of getting hit. And that wasn't a full contact school. In my new school, we HAVE to spar, unless we have an injury or something. The way I got over the fear is, I just got in there and sparred. I did a lot of "running" at first, but I told myself that this is bull s**t. If I got in a real fight, I'd be dead. So I started fighting back. Now I have no fear of getting hit. I can take full contact hits to the "gear". Even with the gear on, ya can still "feel" the hit, and it doesn't bother me now. I walk away with bruises, but the training is worth it. As far as BB's sparring, yes they should have the skill to "read" what their partner will do by then. When 1st gups and/or BBs test in my new dojang, they have to show that they have that skill, then fight off 2 to 3 people at once. I'm not a instructor, so I can't give you advice about what to do, but I hope my experience with sparring helped. Perhaps, but I personally believe full-contact sparring contains aspects that are beneficial to the student, assuming they survive. :) e.g feel the rush of adrenaline and what it can do to you and your technique, face a HIGHLY adrenalized opponent and note the effect on their ability to feel (or not feel) your techniques, note first hand what a full contact blow does to you and your ability to continue the fight (i.e. can you 'suck it up'), etc. Ray Terry raymail@hpwsrt.cup.hp.com --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Korean Terminology Assistance To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 8:24:42 PDT Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Was wondering if anyone can help with a little translation from Korean to > English on a few terms...I'm having a wee bit of a problem with proper > ...Knee Break (As in Koryo) The Kuk-ki Taekwondo Textbook lists this as mureup-kkokki.
