I have a very non-sport oriented school and I consider sparring very important to learning the martial aspect of martial art. Let me say that we do little sport oriented sparring, but free sparring with continuous techniques. For starters, sparring teaches timing, focus, distance, footwork, reaction, and reading the oponent, how to control your opponent, and how to deal with being hit. <<<<<<,,My school is not 'sport' orientated, although it is required to learn sparring techniques and sparring series' we are not required to spar to attainour BB, our instructors pphilosphy is that if you do everything well in an attack situation you will be able to "spar'.>>>>>>>>>>> I have to disagree with your instructor. Fighting is a totally different world, even from sparring, and it should also be practiced as realistically as possible. Just because you know how to do a techinque does not mean you can do it under an adrenalin rush, and with a non-cooperative partner. Also, you have to learn how to deal with being hit. <<>>>> Anne, with all respect, if you arn't learning anything "martial", how can you call it a martial art. I don't believe sparring can be called fighting, even controlled. <> Master Dunn, I'm responding to your post so I can forward to one my students. In general I agree with your post completely. I believe karotty without martial science would be called Tae Bo or Cardio Kickboxing... Today, my student and I had a good phone chat. She basically told me she hated sparring, but knew I would expect her to at least try her best when asked to do it. Later on in the conversation she acknowledged that her dislike of sparring had to do with some of her own issues, and thanked me for helping her work through some of them. So one could offer that sparring is a very important part of the Do of Karate-Do Yours in Jung Do, Charles Richards Moja Kwan TangSooDo Yahoo! - Official partner of 2002 FIFA World Cup http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Hapkido Self Defense Center" To: Date: Thu, 6 Jun 2002 18:23:52 -0400 Subject: [The_Dojang] Seminars Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net As a friend and fan of this true martial artists, I would highly recommend that you attend one of Master Timmerman's clinics. But it wasn't just me that hated it or was "scared" to. So he didn't "force" us to spar. He offered a sparring clinic like every two weeks or so to work on drills, techniques, free sparring, ect. I took one of those classes and got hit hard (I was a white belt at the time), and that cured me of sparring. It was supposed to be light contact, but an avanced belt hit me hard, and they should have had control. He didn't ask me to spar, because I would have said "hell no". And he didn't force me either. I didn't spar again till I got my yellow belt in TKD (Febuary ... about a year and a half after getting wacked). My new teacher noticed that I was "backing away", and asked why, and I told him. So he had me spar with no contact to build some skills with drills and such. After a while, it was light contact, then in april, I was fighting full contact. He helped me with the "fear" of getting hit. It was partly me, too, because I was tired of "running". Now I can hold my hands behind my back and take a shot in the gut (with gear on that is LOL), and not even flinch. It took a while to get rid of the fear, but it's worth it. And I do (or the whole school) works on drills alot, also. So that helps with building technique and reaction time. You are in complete control of that. Just switch your setting back to what 99% of the other subscribers are using, the digest format.
