In my country, there are even some Red Belts working as instructors. 1st Dan instructor is something normal in Poland. But some of them have 8-10 years experience, as generally many of the "older generation" practitioners progressed slower through the ranks as it happens nowadays. In my case, it took me 9 years to gain my 1st Dan (all gradings underway taken and passed). And I started my school while still wearing a coloured belt. In my personal opinion, as one of the British masters said, "it`s not the Dan, it`s the man" (or woman :) And after my students started winning in competitions, the other instructors quickly started to take me seriously, without chcecking my Dan grade ;) Regards -- Piotr Bernat dantaekwondo@lublin.home.pl http://www.taekwondo.prv.pl --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sat, 8 Jun 2002 12:57:47 -0700 (PDT) From: jim bruce To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net, the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Daniel Pearl (RIP) video Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > View at your own risk. I'm curious as to whether other HKD schools include free sparring of this type. We also do grappling but the problem for me is that it's hard not to use all my HKD techniques. I elbowed someone in the head with what I thought was control; he wasn't hurt but about blacked out. It was the only technique I had at the time which would work. I was controlled but I wanted to send the message about his vulnerability. I can't see another way besides TKD style sparring to develop a sense of vision in fighting. I guess judo is another approach. Any recommendations? Do you really think that the average and even far above average martial artist could have successfully defended him or herself against these armed terrorists who significantly outnumbered the victim? With all respect, the statement above strikes me as naive and should not be used as justification for what I can only see as morbid voyeurism. I frankly have no interest in viewing this video.
