Today's Topics: 1. rec centers (Charles Richards) --__--__-- Message: 1 Date: Mon, 10 Jun 2002 19:27:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Richards To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] rec centers Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> I was asked recently if I would be willing to start up a MA program for the city's (my employer) parks & rec program. I have previously owned and operated a regular TKD school, but would like the input of those distinguished DD members who currently operate their classes through a parks & rec. Pitfalls, advice, cautions, start up tips, costs, tuition rates etc.....feel free to reply off list if you want. I'm sure I could figure it out, but would rather not reinvent the wheel. <> Dear Mark, Master Dunn pretty much hit all the cons... be prepared to move or have a week or two notice to cancel a class if a "higher priority" one time rec function comes along. If they have 10 or 12 week "sessions" with breaks you get planned vacations. With these breaks and changed location/schedules, don't expect to produce any senior gups (makes a great feeder program)... Pros Usually a steady flow of new students (no ads or their ads). You can have summers off. They do collections and give you a net proffit check usually every month or every session added to say 20 test fees and about 10 new uniforms each session can be a decent amount of spending change for a "part-time" gig. Here's a tip for cash flow. Have a belt test at the end of each session. Tips 20-30% is the going average split. Walk away from a 50-50 split unless you feel that they will really market your program and you can generate a pile of students, but remember you can operate your own commercial school for 35-55% gross proffit... Try to have a conversation with the manager and explain how crucial a consistent year round schedule is to your growth, and that you need that committment for the school to be viable. Find out up front what kind if any liability insurance they provide and/or negotiate down closer to a 20% split by providing your own coverage... Hope that helps, Charles R.
