All of the responses I recieved both here and privately suggested that I go with CDT because of it's direction toward liability issues, etc. I spent this last week in Glasgow, Kentucky participating in the Level IV Tactical Master Certification course and let me tell you all something. It was worth every second and every dime!! The techniques that you learn in CDT will by without a doubt stand up in a court of law should you have to go for defending yourself legally. I seriously doubt if this would be the case in Krav Maga. Yes, KM seems to be a very very effective system in regards to self-defense. But if you are not careful they could get you in serious legal trouble. Keep in mind that this is just my personal opinion. My CDT instructor did NOT at anytime say anything similiar to "CDT is better than Krav Maga because.......". He was way to professional to make such a statement. If anyone of you are looking into CDT for whatever reason, you cannot go wrong with deciding to go with it. I very glad I did and I look forward to a long career in CDT. This system that Thomas Patire has created is surely awesome! Just my 2 cents. James GTKDA >> I think Krav Maga is fine where legalities are not a concern (War or other 'combat' situations) But, despite the post 9/11 world we find ourselves in, Legalities are still a concern, and I'm glad someone is teaching the legal consequences of anything we do when we use are martial skills. I wish it was part of every single martial arts school curriculum, but the sad thig is, that it isn't.... It means "to push" or "to press on" but has become generalized to mean almost anything depending on context. The origin of the term, according to Schlatt's Shotokan dictionary, is from the Japanese military (I believe it was the naval academy). John Wallace is right in that it is overused in the West. In Japan it is usually associated with militaristic schools, although perhaps there are more of those than most people might think. A gentleman named Hirada did a dissertation back in the 1980s that showed that Japanese college students train in the martial arts to seek a disciplined instructor, to seek self-discipline, and to study traditional Japanese arts. Most of those students then, by definition, are looking for a militaristic form of training. Bruce Simms is also right in that the use of the term is infectious. I never trained in Japanese karate, but I've worked out with a few, and I find myself using it occasionally myself. Think of it as a civilized growl. Due to insurance problems at the venue we have had to change the test from F.A.I.S. to my school, the Academy of Tae Kwon Do at 988 Oak St.(at Scott St.), S.F., CA 94117. This is only about 6 blocks up from the original site so it should be easy to find. Again, sorry about the last minute change but it could not be helped. Prof. Rick Clark will be in S.F. teaching a vital point seminar on Sunday June 23rd from 1 to 5 P.M. at Alemany's School of Karate at 1319 20th Ave.(at Irving) in the Sunset District of S.F. He has just come back from teaching a series of 12 seminars in England, Ireland and Scotland. We want a good turnout so that Prof. Clark will put the Bay Area back on his annual seminar tour. He has just published a new book on vital point strikes and is a master of demonstrating the applications of the movements from all martial arts forms. This is a great opportunity to work with an outstanding martial artist so call me and let me know if you want to reserve a space. There is limited space available so it will be first come first serve. The cost of this 4 hour seminar is only $50. You can reach me at (415)864-4827 if you have any questions or need additional information. Peace. He says some schools do depending on the amount of other material covered. So My new question is what is typical in schools other than mine for BB testing. (you may respond privately if you wish: skjoldan@mnstate.edu). I did as quoting the philosophy of my instructor. I do agree with you so far as that fighting in actuality is far different, but we do not have to agree with our instructor on 100% of everything, but I do defend his position. I was able to defend myself mainly I believe because I have been trained to remain calm and I have confidence in my ability.. But we all do learn how to get hit. Anne you said: <<<<< in an attack situation you will be able to 'spar'.>>>>>> I replied: <<< I don't believe sparring can be called fighting, even controlled. I have to disagree with your instructor. Fighting is a totally different world, even from sparring, and it should also be practiced as realistically as possible. Just because you know how to do a technique does not mean you can do it under an adrenaline rush, and with a non-cooperative partner. Also, you have to learn how to deal with being hit.>> No I do not , and neither does my instructor, believe free sparring is an attack situation. Maybe I misinterpreted you. So maybe we need to start again. Why do you believe that free sparring is an important part of the curriculum? <>>. You are welcome for my input. And I am very glad to hear that you were able to defend yourself successfully when you were attacked.>> Set sparring? From my interpretation of what you say here we do do that type of sparring , just not so much free sparring. <> looking forward to your input Anne --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Dunn, Danny J RASA" To: "'the_dojang@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Tue, 11 Jun 2002 10:21:13 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Randall's Training Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Randall said: <> <> Randall, Got me curious. Things will be changing for me in 2.5 weeks. I have accepted an early retirement offer from HP. Friday, June 28 will be my HP retirement date. Why do you care? After June 28 any email addrs for me ending in hp.com, like this one, will cease to function. Please use rterry@idiom.com if you need to reach me via private email. What will I do? Enjoy the summer! It will be my first summer off in ~25 years. I'll probably travel, teach, train and get in a few week-or-so long bicycle trips. I'll also probably travel a bit around Europe and elsewhere teaching weapons seminars. A few months (years?) down the road maybe I'll get bored and look for another job. Time will tell. But never fear, the lists will continue to be up and functioning. I now return you to your regularly scheduled discussions.
