New Zealand is even more down under than Australia and at the moment is freezing cold. A good time to be in front of the Computer. As for the fighting/sparring debate I used to be a bouncer at a busy Irish bar (it was my sisters) and had to sort out a few people. I am a BB in Taekwondo but found I only ever used half a dozen hapkido moves taught to me by a friend who held BB's in both disciplines. I am 38 years old and still occasionally compete at tournaments and whereas I find the sparring great it doesn't compare in the psychological aspects of a full on fist fight. I thought it was because I train hard. I guess money talks. I also think $99 a month is a little pricy, too. Am I getting suckered, or is this normal? <> Dear Laurie, I believe high yellow is around 7th gup and is the normal time most schools try to up-sell a client. Just remember this basic rule of capitalism. Those who add value to their community survive and thrive. Window dressing is short lived. So if you believe you will get added value from the "excellence club" by all means sign-up and enjoy it. By the same token, if the material is offered and indeed required at the higher levels you can save some serious cash if you're not concerned about what rank or recognition you get while you're on the path, neh? Ask yourself these questions... Can I commit to myself to come to class 4 to 6 days per week? Would I enjoy teaching/assisting 1 to 2 of those days? Will what I get now be worth forgoing say 2 nites a month of dinner and a movie? If you get three yes answers the program offered might be for you, If you get two or more no answers, I suspect you will burn-out before the program ends. FWIW $99/month is about $8-$12/class depending on how often you go. For a dance studio $10 per class is cheep. My wife's Yoga card is $120 for 10 classes. You'll have to put your own value on the $99/month... Stand close to the bag (don't run and jump) and leap staight up without springing down first, and "ride the bag" to the ground. Very fun exercise." I'm not sure that I understand what you mean by this. Do you slide down the bag or use the bag as a counterweight in some way? The bag is an opponent. You jump it either by jumping straight up and onto it or grabbing the top (like someone's shoulders) and propelling yourself up, then ride it to the ground with you on top. You can land on your feet, on your knees (with bag between like riding a bull), but you will be on top pounding the heck out of it. Preferrably in writing -- and you should probably send a gift to the grantor if it is given without fee. After you get permission, I reccommend that you scan the pages using a hight quality scanner, use a good graphics program to clean up the scan smudges, and print it out using acid free paper and archival inks on a photo quality printer. The paper is readily available at better computer stores or by special order through office supply stores, the archival quality ink is best ordered through the web. You can then take the pages to a local bookbinder and have the work assembled and bound. Yours in training - Joel S. Charlie is on vacation this weekend, so I'll try to answer these questions as best I can. :) I'm his assistant instructor of sorts. >I did not see Chul Gi III on your site, do you introduce it at the >higher levels? Heh. I actually don't know. We know the form exists, of course, but I'm not sure if it's taught. I've wondered this myself. >How far is Natchitoches Louisiana from New Orleans (I have fam. in >NOLA)? About 4-5 hours. It's a good little haul. We'll be heading down there in August for the USKA world championships. >Also you're not far from GM West's for the August USKMAF >Hapkido-Taekwondo-TangSooDo Seminar. Hope to maybe meet you there. Hmmm... it's something we'll have to look in to. >And what is the Iron Claw form, does it relate to any of the >Funakoski/Shotokan Kata? Iron Claw, as I am given to understand, is a version of Go Pai Sho, which I believe is not one of the Shotokan kata. I have seen reference to it as the "Korean version" before. >In 1950's did Master Chittim recall the art being refered to as Tang >Soo Do (as in 1944) or Tae Soo Do or Tae Kwon Do? Master Chittim died, I believe, in the mid-80s, so I'm not entirely sure. His successor, though, calls the art taekwondo. This is most likely a reflection of Rhee's calling the art taekwondo starting in the... late 50s, wasn't it? >I noticed you used the Japanese form Sensei in lieu of one of the >Korean forms like KyoSa or SaBom. Is this unique to your school or >typical of Chung Do Kwan (relating to GM Lee, W.K.'s Shotokan >background)? I've never thought about it from that angle. I've always chalked it up to being surrounded and influenced by Japanese schools. Most of the schools of our style (the Chittim/Jordan lineage) refer to the head instructor as Sensei, to my knowledge, or simply as Mr. So-and-so. >Welcome from another in the Jhoon Rhee line to the digest. >Also extend an invitation to our annual traing camp (I noticed you have >one) September 28, 2002 in North Georgia (see >www.geocities.com/mojakwan/events to register online). Georgia's a bit far, but again, it's somehing to look in to. Our summer camp is mostly for our kids, keep them interested and motivated. I hope that about covered it. Hopefully Charlie will cover anything I missed when he returns. :) Yours in the Martial Arts, Nathan Miller _________________________________________________________________ Send and receive Hotmail on your mobile device: http://mobile.msn.com --__--__-- Message: 12 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang), eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 20:18:41 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Amazon: Marine Corps' Hand to Hand Combat Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Sorry, but this auto generated listing from Amazon just cracked me up...
