Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mr. K, you asked:

I don't have any articles on boxing. Want to write one for my ezine?

Response: Sure, but I need a little more time in the gym. I would take the approach of the blood and guts of the boxing aspect. No etiquette stuff, no bowing, no mamby pamby. Just the facts. Hitting the bag, drills, working hard, sweating. No philosophical debate. Hit the bag, chase the chicken (as in Rocky II), and hit the meat packing plant and work the ribs on the hanging meat (Rocky I). Road work, working out, and buidling skills. That's the approach. That's me. Like it ? Me and Mike Hammer, Gin and Juice, and ladies. Yeah, that's the ticket. More to follow. McD... I have seen reference to it as the "Korean version" before. <> Any chance of getting a video version (at my expense), or uploading the video to say Master McHenry's hyung web-site? <> Master Chittim died, I believe, in the mid-80s, so I'm not entirely sure. His successor, though, calls the art taekwondo. This is most likely a reflection of Rhee's calling the art taekwondo starting in the... late 50s, wasn't it? I've never thought about it from that angle. I've always chalked it up to being surrounded and influenced by Japanese schools. Most of the schools of our style (the Chittim/Jordan lineage) refer to the head instructor as Sensei, to my knowledge, or simply as Mr. So-and-so. <> Dear Nathan, Charlie should be honored to have such a fine Kyosa Nim (Class Instructor) running the dojang and fielding emails during his vacation. Cheers! Yes, GM Rhee has been referred to by some as the father of American Taekwondo. And I'm not surprised that many Chung Do Kwang instructors use Sensei and O-Sensei as we often do what our instructors did, even if it deviates from our cultural norms. I'm guessing Sensei is school owners or 5th Dan and above (Master) and Mr. is for U Dan Ja (1st-4th Dan)? Do Ju Nim Lee, W.K. would have referred to his instructor as Funakoshi Sensei, and so it seems natural that he would refer to himself as Sensei when he began teaching in Korea. In 1944 DJM Lee founded Chung Do Kwan Tang Soo Do. From my research it wasn't until 1973 that CDK joined the WTF so from 1944 to 1973 some of the CDK schools might still be using Tang Soo Do (or Tae Soo Do) as a "name" (and very logically Sensei for instructor). Just curious. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi and be blessed ' Cliff.Vaught@pmusa.com '. I Ramon Navarro a Hapkido SabomNim from the country of Panama; Been teaching this art for nearlly 26 years. With every ones respect, a Grand Master is a few things : In an oficial way it is usually some one that has achieved a high ranking status ( depending on the style and organization ) usually beying minimum an 8th Dan Black Belt. Also a martial arts consists on a persons grouth phisicaly/mind and spiritualy. But in a sort of a way a martial artist that as a person grouth is achieved and can keep the grouth it would be a person that has been able to form good Masters, that made good instructors, good black belts and that is making color belts with good morals and sound mind attitudes. this is sort of for me a Grand Master; Also a person that guides and reflects its attitude set with a philosophy on seting good moral prinsiples set by exsamples. I hope to have given you in my answer the right information ! There are no words of comfort to members of our extended Taekwon-Do family worldwide, which will placate the feelings of utter desolation that his passing has produced. While we mourn the death of a man whose life spanned two centuries, let us not forget the legacy, nor the indelible impression that he has left in the lives of all who are dedicated to the essence of the beloved art of his invention. At this time of bereavement, I know my father would commend us all if we continued with the same vigour and zest which personified his life, the promotion of Taekwon-Do worldwide.
