I began with Kenpo Karate, but quickly changed (while still a white belt) to TaeKwonDo. Anyway, I just wanted to say hi, and see if anyone was/is out there, I haven't seen any messages for awhile. Thanks- Rita --__--__-- Message: 3 From: DrgnSlyr5@aol.com Date: Sat, 22 Jun 2002 00:26:49 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] indomitable spirit Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >From another list: > I have a friend with one leg, a BB and he throws some mean kicks from his crutches. He doesn't wear a prosthesis. He is a champion skier too. The sky is the limit with friends telling you that you can do things. I had a student who was a double amputee in a wheelchair. Who I taught to roll out of his chair because he was fed up with falling out when he hit a curb or crossing railroad tracks. We had some great classes with this fellow. I taught him how to release his chair handles and use them as a weapon. He was so determined that when he would spar he would roll out of his chair and grab you by the legs and take you down and sit across your chest before you realized it. Just think what an unsuspecting jerk may think. He did kata in tournaments from his chair. He was so proud that he cried when being awarded his medals. We sure miss Mike LaFleaur at the dojo, his disease finally took him last year. "Forza Corea" roughly means "Go Korea" in Italian. Both "Korea" and "Corea" were used in the 19th century. But, as supporters of the "Corea" spelling assert online, Japan forced the "K" spelling upon the country during its imperial rule from 1910-1945, so that Korea would follow Japan in alphabetical listings. "We don't have to insist on using 'Korea,' a legacy of Japanese rule," a Netizen who uses the ID mainmic, said. "Most foreign languages except for English, such as French or Spanish, use a 'C' instead of a 'K' to spell Korea." Another Netizen wrote in a soccer Web site, "I think Japan played a role in switching the spelling to 'Korea' from 'Corea,' since 'Korea' was used more frequently in the 20th century compared with the late 19th century, when both spellings were employed." However, the academic circle says allegations that Japan interfered in the spelling change are groundless. "'Korea' was already used in Western publications before the 19th century, such as German diplomatic documents written in 1840 and 'China Pilot' printed in 1861," said Oh Sang-hak, a researcher at the National Museum of Korea. "The Korean newspaper, The Independent, used 'Korea' as well." According to Oh, both spellings were used, with languages having German roots using "Korea," and Latin-derived languages "Corea." It seems that "Korea" gradually took predominance over "Corea," he said. A Red Devil member said the biggest reason for using "Corea" instead of "Korea" is because "forza" is Italian and the name of the country should be in Italian as well. jhl@koreaherald.co.kr 2002.06.22 --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
