I find it very helpful in my TKD experience. However I have to write again to report an injury and was just curious how many people on the list had the same sort of injury either in Taekwondo or another Korean Martial Art. Last week we had free sparring with full contact. Everything was fine and I was quite in good mood and happy being able at last to counter-attack another brown belt in our dojang who was always "better" than me in sparring. So far - so good. Bad thing is - we changed our sparring partners and another guy went in (red belt). He had a complete other sparring style than the one brown belt I mentioned and he reminded me very much of some "Ninja Turtle" as he was jumping around waving his fists and elbows (!!!!!) very fast towards me. I tried to keep him away with some back kicks (dwi-chagis) and tried some turning kicks. Suddenly when stepping out of his range I twisted my ankle in a way that even he could hear the sound: "Kkkkk". It sounded just like my whole foot broke away... it was terrible. I quit sparring and went to the shower to put my foot under cold water very gently. It hurted so much, I was really sick and nearly went down in a blackout. After X-ray in hospital they told me that It would go away in about 3 weeks when I rest (no sports). It really aches with every step I make and I am afraid of twisting again. Yesterday I tried to keep up with training again and did some light kicking and partner-exercises. I fixed the foot with tape and had a quite "good" feeling (not so much afraid of twisting). Afterwards when putting away the tape again the "bad feeling" returned an I hobbled out of the dojang again. How many of you had similar experiences and how did you deal with them? In about 4 weeks we have our training camp where I will have my next promotion (2nd brown belt) and I am looking forward that I can make it being healthy again. And let me also tell you that I am not in Han Mu Do, but I have a lot of experience teaching martial arts to kids. I know that you are very interested in helping your son learn and excell in the art. However, at 8 years old and being new to the art, your son needs to learn in an environment where he is getting constant feedback from a qualified instructor. Relearning something that he has learned not quite right takes a lot longer than learning it right in the first place. In my opinion, the best thing you can do for him is just make sure he gets to classes, encourage him, and help him practice what he remembers from class. Let the videos wait. Please forward this thanks to Ken. This was great timing, since we'll be heading over to Korea in less than two weeks. Not sure our schedule there yet, since we have a lot of people to see and things to do in our short stay, but I'm going to try and get to this new store. Thanks again! It works great! I found someone taking a large tree down and cut one 6 inch slice approx. 8 " in diameter (head) and two 6" slices approx. 14" in diameter (upper and lower torso). I then took two pieces of chain and attached them to the slices . I hung it at a six foot height so it vaguely resembled a body. For competition with others I marked areas of the slices with a point system : 1-wounded , 2- bad wound , 3-mortal wound or kill. A predetermined amount of rounds are set and points are totaled at the end. Or you can just call out which one you are going to hit. I prefer just calling your target as every year there is a Kuk Sool Won Tournament in Houston and that is how you are scored (they tell you which one to throw at). You also must throw from the blade so I practice both ways. p.s. I have a throw down set for those who don't have any but most people I throw with bring their own knives. Moo Duk Kwan was excluded because GM Hwang sucessfully fought to not have it included. I was more interested in getting some of M. Seo's views on what else was included or excluded and how the Japanese roots of Hapkido were different from Tang Soo Do Japanese roots. I think M. Seo, given his position, answered pretty clearly in his last post to me that it was a battle of major personalities, unwillingness to give up autonomy and lastly the story is given with "preceptions" of those involved. TANG SOO!!! Danny Dunn <<<<<<<<<<<<<< Danny, This has been one of the points I have been harping on over this whole KidoHae issue - the perception is that Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan was excluded by the Kidohae. The truth is that KJN Hwang Kee fought to remain independent. Information can be a very dangerous thing - it's important that we get the right information. Mine comes from "The History of the Moo Duk Kwan" by KJN Hwang Kee - in it is a photograph of the supreme court decision that allowed the Moo Duk Kwan (teaching Tang Soo Do/Soo Bahk Do) to remain independent. Therefore, I can only imagine that you are trying to make a point and in doing so hide your identity. If you know as much about me as you claimed, then there would be no need for you to ask questions, wouldn't you? If you, at any time availed yourself of my instruction, then your inquiry can be considered a act of disrespect and an attempt to be devisive. However, since you ask certain questions I will humbly answer for the benefit of those who read your post. It is true that I have considerable experience in Taekwondo, Hapkido, Jiu Jitsu, Chen Tai Ji Chuan, and Yin Fu Ba Gua Zhang. I love martial arts so I simply study from those who I consider to be leaders in their respective disciplines. That includes GM Michael A. Atamian, Chosondo's 5th Successor. I met GM Atamian over 16 years ago and began studying the art. GM Atamian passed the art onto me alitrtle over 8 years ago. GM Atamian chose me above students had been with hime for 20 years because he felt I had what it took to preserve the art in the manner he invisioned. Since then, I have made considerable changes in the art, much to his shugrin. I felt that if I am going to be responsible for moving the art into the future, I had to infuse it with my perspective on what I feel it should be. In doing so, I reclaimed use of the name, "Choson Kwon Bup" because I felt it more accurately reflected the art's history and cultural orientation. So, "J" if you know anything about me, you would know that I take great pains to do things the right way, that my martial art history and accomplishments is above reproach. Moreover, I can back up any claims I make in everyway. I hope that my response satisfies your inquiry. Ian A.
