LOL But in all seriousness, it sounds as though you have a very important event coming up soon that you need to be completely healed to do your best. The doctor's are right, it take about 3 weeks (without re-injury) to heal. What has worked for me is to make sure your training does not have any impact on the injured ankle. If kicking, kick only with injured side, do not put all your body weight on the injured ankle. This seems to slow the healing process, at least in my case. Personally, I would stay away from any sparring to reduce the chance that your partner may inadvertently add to your injury. Use a bag or shadow to keep your skills up. Three weeks of light training sounds extremely difficult I know, but think of it as Jung Shin training!!! I wish you luck! Sincerely, Kat --__--__-- Message: 4 From: SallyBaughn@aol.com Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 12:21:03 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: TKD injury - twisted ankle Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >From the mouth of someone who's had the same injury: Stay OFF the foot as much as possible for two weeks. RICE every night. After two weeks, wear an ankle brace for walking, use both brace and proper taping for LIGHT sparring. Tape it properly (go online and search for "Trish Bare" who has excellent information about proper taping OR go to a bookstore and look it up). Finally, you just have to let the ankle heal. It will suck because you won't be able to do anything and it will drive you crazy; but you'll be better off in the long run and won't re-injure the ankle. Hope this may help. Take an anti-inflamatory (advil or tylenol) every 4 hours or so. Use a wrap during the day, and take it off at night to exercise it and rest it. Don't train for a week or so. I know it's hard to stay away from the dojang that long but it will help. When you do start training again, wrap it, like you did, but don't use that foot/leg for kicking. Use the other one. And then ice it afterwards. If you do this for a while, you should be ok for your test. <<<<>>>> I pulled my hammy a week before my green belt test in May (during a breaking clinic). I did a jumping axe kick, and heard a "rip" ..... that f***ing hurt! I was a dummy and broke again with the same leg two minutes later! Well, I couldn't take my test till 6/29. I was mad at myself LOL. But I iced it for awhile, like a week, I think. Then I'd soak in a hot tub, warm up the muscle, and gently stretch the hammy. I did that for a month. Oh and I went through so much advil that I could have turned into the bottle LOL. I'm almost back to normal. I still feel a little pain when I try a front split, but I gently work at it every other day. The award was presented by AAU Taekwondo’s National Chief Referee, Rick Blair, on July 4, at a ceremony at the 2002 AAU Youth and Taekwondo Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina. In addition to a beautiful trophy the award includes a $1,000 scholarship. Kurt Fuhrmann was honored for his outstanding combination of Taekwondo accomplishments, academic achievement, and community service. Kurt has been practicing Taekwondo for ten years and most recently won a spot on the AAU Taekwondo Black Belt International Team. In March, he took the gold in both Olympic style sparring and poom-se competition in the 15-16 year old black belt division at The Puerto Rico Open. He also was the Grand Champion in poom-se for the entire tournament. A leader in his high school, Kurt has been instrumental in serving his community, including creating a program called “Break the Silence, Stop the Violence!” which emphasizes making schools a safer place. Additionally he has been a volunteer at AAU Summer Camps, and helped raise money to fight juvenile crime through board breaking kick-a-thons. He also has led Taekwondo demo teams to benefit the handicapped. The Chris Canning Award of Excellence was founded in memory of Chris Canning, a 15-year-old Taekwondo practitioner who died from accidental causes in 2001. Canning was a talented athlete and upstanding young man who won numerous medals in AAU Taekwondo competition, was captain of his football team, played three musical instruments, championed animal-rights issues, and collected clothes for the needy. The award is now presented annually during the opening ceremonies of the Youth and Adult National Taekwondo Championships to a martial artist with the rank of 1st degree black belt or above within the AAU Taekwondo organization who has demonstrated the competitive spirit, athletic accomplishments and personal attributes set as standards of the award. In conjunction with the presentation of a trophy is a $1,000 scholarship to the recipient for further martial arts training or higher education. I agree that it would be of some help if folks who write in on the DD would identify themselves sufficiently to make for a comfortable exchange, but I think thats probably Rays' domain and I am sure he has probably contacted "J" off-line. The reason I am writing is that I DON'T have a lot of insight into how you came to hold the position that you do as the head of a specific Korean MA. I'm wondering if, despite not sufficiently identifying himself, you could take time to answer some of "J"'s questions. Personally, until your name came up in a listing in one of the MA magazines I had never heard of Chosondo.( As I write this I am thinking of a number of folks who write in to the DD who want to know how to say something in Korean and I am always left with a feeling that using exotic names to invoke the romance of Korean history is sort of a commercial contrivance rather than a historical accuracy.) Am I correct in saying that Chosondo is actually a post-WW II (re-)construction comprised of material taken from a number of sources rather than an indigenous Korean art? I ask only because, frankly, I have never heard of M Michael A Atamian. Being a "5th successor" would suggest that the art is about 120 to 150 years old, yes? Or, is it a consistent pattern of succession in Chosondo that folks inherit and pass succession closer to the 10 year mark as in your case, which would make the art closer to 50 years old? If Chosondo is derived from another art, perhaps it would help if you could share some of the influences that shaped your choices as you selected the techniques for your curriculum, and from which arts these techniques were selected. Maybe it would be of some help if you could share the complete lineage of Chosondo so that I can better understand how it fits into the overall history and development of KMA. Is it possible to identify the other four successors to Chosondo and determine from what original art they may have developed from? Of course, this could all be just academic if the labels "Choson Kwon Bup" and "Chosondo" are titles which you yourself decided to use, and were not in fact used historically to identify the art. But then I am left to wonder if what you have done is taken so many years experience in a variety of arts, knit those experiences together under an evocative label and marketed it to the folks in your area with an eye towards going national as a commecial concern. Personally I don't have a problem with this if this is the case, but I am wondering if folks wouldn't be better served if you shared that right up front. Thanks in advance for your feedback. Ian was kind enough to submit info on Chosondo and it may now be found in our KMA FAQ, available at the martialartsresource.com website. That may answer most of your questions...
