Hwang is his sir-name, not Kee. It would be GM Hwang. > Secondly why did he change the name of his art back to Soo Bak Do? > Did he change anything from Moo Du Kwan Tang Soo Do? He began calling his art "HwaSooDo", but after several failed attempts went to the more common name "TangSooDo" like the Chung Do Kwan and others were using. While researching and translating the Mooyidobotongji, he found the ancient name for Korean arts to be "SooBahk" and so changed his 'art' name to be "SooBahkDo". Only fairly receintly did he make some changes in SooBahkDo, bringing in a form set he created called "Chil-song" (7) and then forms he translated from the Mooyidobotongji called "Yuk-rho" (6) and "Hwa-sun" (1). In Korea, instead of the Yuk-rho set they may do a "Ship dan kahm" (10) set, which is very simular to the "Yuk-rho" forms. ________________________________________________________________ Sent via the EV1 webmail system at mail.ev1.net --__--__-- Message: 3 From: ChunjiDo@aol.com Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 08:45:01 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: sport tkd listings Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <<29th Annual TKD Champs Oct 12 Kansas City, Kansas>> hey ray, do you have any contact info for this one? thanks! mel Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2001 10th Annual US Open TKD Championships --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Braeswood Martial Arts" To: Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 07:59:06 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Mr. Whalen Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hello Mr. Whalen, I believe we were once training partners in the Houston area. In regards to Mario's question about green belt rank...Green is 7th Gup...in most schools I have attended or been associated with (regardless of ITF or WTF since green gup rank is the same) 7th gup (green belt) is considered the start of advanced rank...no longer a beginner...though they still have a long way to go to become a Black Belt... It seems to me that in the recent decade and maybe even earlier...the etiquette which was so important in a dojang, at a tournament, at demonstrations, or just in meeting another martial artist in a casual setting...seems to be understressed and unenforced in today's martial arts...I have always felt that etiquette was a primary component of courtesy and have tried to maintain the traditional forms of martial arts etiquette as were taught to me by my instructors...these forms of etiquette were not unique to Tae Kwon Do or to the Korean martial arts alone, but extended across the realm of martial arts in general as the same forms of etiquette were practiced by all other styles as well... Today, the martial arts are becoming more westernized as are the Eastern Instructors who come the United States...Western Style habits and idiosyncrasies are more prevalent among practitioners as well as the instructors...this is not a bad thing, but cannot be considered a completely good thing either... In Example...and this is JUST an example...I was taught that hands on the hips as well as folding of the arms is very discourteous...hands on the hips showing a sign of laziness or being tired...and folded arms being a sign of disinterest or arrogance...(I am guilty of both)...and I use to be corrected often by my seniors not to practice such habits...Today these habits seem to be acceptable when they were not before... I feel it is important to be current with modern times, but I also believe that tradition is very important as it holds and binds groups of people together into their own communities...as well as maintains the purity of their origins... Anyone wish to offer their opinions or comments?...and please feel free to bring up ANY form of etiquette or habits... not just the ones used in the example... The One and Only "Tink" Kim G. This makes a total of 12 coloured belts. Does it mean that you also have 12 Kup grades? Usually there are only 10 Kup grades in TKD. I believe the French TKD Federation uses (or used) a 15 Kup grades system, but only for kids - adult practitioners also had only 10 Kup grades. BTW, our system is white, yellow stripe, yellow, green stripe, green, blue stripe, blue, red stripe, red, black stripe, black. Officially in Polish WTF yellow is directly after white but we decided to keep the 9th Kup (yellow stripe) test. Hello Jose: The technique that you describe is known as Bang Won Ki, and it can be found in a number of Korean arts (usually at a higher level) such as Kuk Sool, Hap Ki Do, and Kong Shin Bup. Sincerely, Rudy While I am at it. Hello folks, I am back again from my two week stay in Utah, and I'd like to take a moment to reflect on the very kind comments Master McHenry makes on JKN Kat Kelly's Grand Opening. Due to a change in the opening date caused by a delay in construction of her building, I was not able to make it. It looks like a number of list and NKMAA members made the trip despite the change in date, and I wish to thank everyone who helped Kat celebrate her opening. I wish I could have been there. Folks, the cameraderie that Master Mc Henry speaks of is largely a result of the brotherhood that Master JR West promotes at his annual seminar. Will I be at the next seminar in Jackson -- you can bet on it! You should be too!
