I'm looking for a Hapkido school in Nashville and came across these styles at the following site. http://www.jinjungkwan.com/ Since I'm only a 5th Gup and have a very limited knowledge of Hapkido and it's various styles I'm hoping those who are more learned on the list could help me out. He left today for Mexico for a week-long seminar and will swing back through for a couple of days on his way back. Then he's off to Korea for a month via S.F. on 31 Aug. I think he will be around the S.F. area for a few days. I hope you get a chance to get together for a good visit. Dojunim says Dr. Kimm is also going to be in Korea at the same time. Ken McKenzie and his folks are traveling with the Han Mu Do guys and I think are going to do some demonstrations there with them. Sure wish I could make it. Maybe next year. P.S., I could have used Mike Tomlinson as my stunt double last night, even if he is full a peanut butter and jelly. He called a couple of days ago and left a message that he'd be coming thru town on the way to Korea on July 31. Been trying to call him back to sync up. If he is in Mexico I guess I now know why he hasn't picked up. :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Re: Korean Characters To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 17:17:33 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > > A Guide to Korean Characters: Reading and Writing Hangul and Hanja > > > > Is there more than one Korean language? I think hanja is the Korean name for Chinese characters. Hangul is the 'new' Korean writing developed during King Sejong's reign, c. 1446. For good intro info on Hangul (Hangeul) see: http://www.korea.net/koreanculture/koreanculture.html Then select Learn about Korean >> Korean Language. Korea.net is an excellent source of info about all things Korean. I am pleased to mention that our http://martialartsresource.com website is pointed to from "Korea.net : Korean Government Homepage". I did/do know about my name being listed on the web site you cited. I am not a member of the KMAIA, I don't really know anything about it other than what I've read here. I am listed there as someone who is a KHF dan holder and I teach in Missoula. I also have some information regarding the KHF on my website, more to follow as I can get things posted. (One thing I have there is the KHF Oath, which is my translation of what was hanging on the dojang wall in Korea) Again, I don't really know much about the KMAIA or other KHF people in the United States. Bad thing about living in Montana, it's out away from everyone. I do have legitimate dan rank from the Korea Hapkido Federation, signed by GM Oh Se-lim. That's why I am listed on that site, and I haven't had a problem with that, more people that come to my site the better. Hope this answers your question. Oh yeah, after I wrote that I wasn't the BEST, I remembered, Black Belt magazine's review of my Hapkido video did say it was one of the best. :-) Yours in Training, Alain Burrese www.burrese.com --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2002 20:22:40 -0400 From: ABurrese@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Korea Report Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net It rained all day Tuesday, but still managed to go see some new things. Went to the Inchon museum and to the Inchon Landing memorial. Interesting if you have an interest in the Korean war and that famous landing that turned the tides of the war. I enjoyed it. Some historians write that it may have been more luck that genious on MacArther's part, but nonetheless, it was a very well done campaign and changed the way the war was going. It was cool to see the big models, old film footage, pictures, etc. It stopped raining today, still cloudy out and humid, but not quite as wet. Took a walk up a small mountain near sister-in-law's place to look at a temple and then to the top to look around Inchon. Very beautiful way to start the day. Not sure what else we'll do today. Off to Kangnung tomorrow. It is my understanding that he is a great Hapkidoist and is one of the best. Upon arrival at Incheon International Airport from North Korea via Beijing, a group of 15 South Korean religious and civic leaders explained the results of their four-day negotiations with North Koreans in Pyeongyang. "The negotiations were difficult, but we insisted that North Korea send its delegation to South Korea as agreed previously," Catholic priest Kim Jong-soo, who led the South Korean delegation, told reporters. Last year, 300 South Korean delegates visited Pyeongyang for joint programs in celebration of the national liberation from the Japanese colonial rule for 35 years from 1910. "As for the resumption of inter-Korean talks, North Korea hinted that the successful hosting of the festivities would result in positive changes in the inter-Korean relationship," he told reporters. According to the agreement, the North Korean delegation will leave for Seoul on Aug. 14, and an array of joint festivities by civic groups will be held in the South Korean capital city and other cities. Hopes for a government-level inter-Korean ceremony were dashed when the June 29 naval clash set back the inter-Korean relations. In the clash on the West Sea, one South Korean patrol boat was sunk, five sailors were killed and 19 others wounded. In the aftermath of the exchange of gunfire, the U.S. withdrew an earlier proposal to reopen security talks with North Korea. --__--__-- Message: 11 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2002 01:14:55 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] bickering and gut checks Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I know this may come as a shock to some of you but I have to agree with Bruce Simms on this one. At times there is a lot of bickering on here and believe me I am definately not one to call the kettle black on that issue.. Alain is right in stating that working out and developing your code of character is foremost in the martial arts.. I wholeheartedly agree with this.. Bruce is also right on here when he states that this is a good forum to bring things into the light that may not be scrutinized any where else. Hey I have no problem with people making money on or in the martial arts. I've made a few bucks myself, enough to pay for training and some very fat and juicy steaks from week to week. But I believe all of us who have decades invested in training should also scrutinize any inconsistencies that we come across in our beloved martial arts. If my fellow Hapkidoists see something that isn't right you better darn well believe that I want to know about it and mill it over in my own skull for a while. I think that all of you on here love what you do and you don't want it soiled or trivialized for the sake of money and ego,, hey know one is perfect,, especially me, but I love the fact that we can bring things out on here and find out the truth behind things... it's cool.. J.R. West, if you need some new certification I am sure I can throw you something together on my printer!!!! ha ha ha Ken McD,, you ought to give up all that midwest stuff and find you a job here in Central Florida, I can see us now heading to Hapkido class in your convertible chevy,, afterwards I can take you to my favorite watering hole in Daytona called the Ocean Deck,, we can listen to live Reggae, sip some brews,, eat some fresh oysters and shrimp and look at the local ladies,,but I have to be home by midnight or my wife will show me some real martial arts!!! If you feel good about it then great. For me there are ONLY 2 groups that I would want to hold and ranking with. Does that mean all other groups are not good? No, but for me and my personal taste and direction in the Mudo I am not interested. I think this whole thing with the KMAIA is funny because most of the GM and Masters in Korea have never herd of it as well as my own, GM Lim, Hyun Soo. If the KMAIA makes you happy then stick with it just don't lie or be false in what it is about or where it came from! I personally think it would be a good thing to have an org. for traditional KMA with motives other than $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
