My family and I recently moved into the Frederick, Maryland area. We are looking for a good self defense oriented, not sport, place to train. Martial Arts USA, under Grand Master Eun Yil Choi, was suggested as a potential site. Does anyone out there know of this dojang and GM Choi? Can anyone speak to the quality of Hap Ki Do which is provided? Thanks for your time. It seems that when he doesn't know you well he will be very gentle when demonstrating a technique on you. As he gets to know you he turns up the throttle on you. And when he really knows you and likes you he gives you the full monty so to speak with the technique, in other words you get a taste of what real pain is!! After watchning him demonstrate on Master Rick Nabor's I can honestly say that Doju Nim Ji must really love Rick because he tools him up really well, and the only thing better than feeling Doju Nim's technique is watching one of your friends feel it!! I would of loved to take some falls for you Rick, but I bet all that pain felt really good, knowing you I bet you loved it, sometimes learning DOES hurt, doesn't it guys.. Connolly II - Good news Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2002 20:59:31 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Maybe some good came out of this. I had not heard of Dr Connolly before. This posting has certainly enlightened me to Dr. Connolly's presence and credentials. Thanks for providing this level of detail about Dr. Connolly. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Burdick, Dakin Robert" To: Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 4:39 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] An Apology to Joseph F. Connolly II PLEASE READ THIS! On Monday, July 22, 2002, I posted the results of my searches among various web pages to the Dojang_Digest mailing list. This was not intended as a scholarly publication, nor did I purport to represent Indiana University in any way, but still I must acknowledge that additional research off the web and less flippancy would have prevented any injury to Dr. Connolly. I hope that this email (which will be posted on Dojang_Digest mailing list as per his request) will serve as adequate apology for my lack of discretion. In that email, entitled "Gary Pointer & KMAIA: A Web Quest," I included the following comment, which I believe was the source of the various calls Dr. Connolly received concerning his reputation: "Connolly lists the following degrees behind his name: 'B.A., LL.B., J.D., F.S.M.A.' Frankly, it is a little weird that he would list both his B.A. and his J.D. (Doctorate of Jurisprudence). I've got to wonder where he got the latter degree." I truly regret making that statement, not only because it hinted at impropriety that does not exist, but also because it caused Dr. Connolly unnecessary hardship. Dr. Connolly was exactly right in taking me to task for inaccurate research, and he can be assured I will avoid such comments in the future. For the sake of the martial arts, I am actually very happy to report that Dr. Connolly not only has his J.D. from the Blackstone School of Law in Chicago (1977) but actually has many more credits to his name, some of which are listed in Marquis "Who's Who in America, 2001," page 1030. Dr. Connolly not only earned his J.D. and did postdoctoral work, but was also a certified EMT and firefighter, and served in various other public safety positions up to and including service as the Director of Public Safety of Poinciana, Florida, in 1985-6 and the Director of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Ireland. He is a former combat lieutenant, an active member of the Boy Scouts of America since 1954, and a Master Sergeant in the Army's Special Forces from 1961-1996. He was decorated with the Purple Heart with two oak leaf clusters and 24 other U.S. and foreign military decorations or citations. His accomplishments go on and on. It goes without saying that reading all of this about Dr. Connolly made me feel truly low for having insulted a man who has done so much for his country. I am grateful that Dr. Connolly gave me the opportunity to retract the statement and offer an apology, and believe that his graciousness in this matter is simply one more indication of his education and training. I hope that readers of this post will distribute it to any and all who may have read the previous post. I also hereby give Dr. Connolly permission to post this public apology on his website or reproduce it any format that he might find necessary to remove any dispersions upon his character. Choi's funeral Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net All, > The Government of D.P.R of Korea organized the funeral committee consisted of 14 members including the Chief Cadres of Government, Mr Chang Ung, the member of the I.O.C and Mr Hwang Pong Yong, president of the Korean Taekwon-Do committee with Mr Choi Tae Bok Chairman of the supreme People's Assembly, Cabinet, the Governmental organizations and several associations. Over 1500 people visited for respect to the deceased Gen. Choi and his family, including Mr Kim Yong Nam, Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and the numerous cadres of high ranks in the government, the chief members of the social organizations, the ambassadors of several countries and the representatives of International organizations in D.P.R of Korea, the foreign delegations and the delegations of the Koreans from abroad, the Taekwon-Do trainers of foreign countries and the instructors of the Korean Taekwon-Do Committee. < These are senior people. Mr. Kim, Yong-nam, is the No. 2 man in NK and is NK's public face both internally and to the rest of the world. This explains Gen. Choi's dying praise of the regime and the political line that ITF and WTF should be unified (just the country's should be unified (presumably under the glorious, unfailing, people's' paradise system)). It is interesting that the chairman of the IOC was present, particularly since the ITF is not style of TKD that is represented in the Olympics. Does this mean that NK ITF will soon be adopting WTF sparing rules? I would be interested to know the composition of the foreign delegations that are mentioned. > Gen Choi's coffin was carried out at 15:00 on the 17th of June. The remains of General Choi were buried in the patriotic Martyrs' cemetery in Pyongyang for his exploits in the field of Taekwon-Do and martial art. < This is presumably the most important cemetery in Pyongyang, again indicating that Gen. Choi was considered useful to the regime. One final point. The General's generalship was gained in the South. It is interesting that it was recognised in the north, or did the General receive another post in the north? It was sad to read that on his deathbed the General was unable to forgive his son and that history will record that there was an irreconcilable split between father and son. If I have learned one thing in martial arts is that it is always changing. I recall attending two different dojangs and I had to remember the differences for the same poomse at the two different dojangs. Consider it a learning experience. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Wednesday, July 24, 2002 2:44 PM Subject: [The_Dojang] Taught the Wrong Form Can the list help me with this situation? I have been practicing a form that is a requirement for my rank (7thgup yellow belt Tae Kwon Do), It seems that if 2 instructors, one a brown belt, the other a black belt taught me the form wrong. My Grandmaster saw me practicing this at the Dojo and told me the form was incorrect. Another black belt, a 4th degree, was sent by the Grandmaster to teach me the form. I was having so much trouble with it that I became frustrated and a little irritated while the blackbelt kept telling me I am not doing it correctly. The Grandmaster told the whole class that the black and brown belts are not living up to their teaching potential and they need to learn how to properly execute the forms as well as teach the students. I am concerned that in the future, other black belts will teach me the wrong thing, especially since Grandmaster will retire in 2007. What is the best way for me to learn the forms properly? Should I just go to one person who seems to be correct in teaching and executing the forms? You shouldn't worry too much about that. What form are you learning? Do you know its name, or can you describe the first few moves?
