Never once has someone come into my dojang asking my political affiliation who did not have a hidden agenda. When a new student starts they do not care what hapkido organization the dojang is affiliated with; at first, do they even understand that they are studying hapkido! They don't care! They are here to practice......Does this really matter to them? Do you think any of the students care at all?...." Here, here. Well said. My college classes turnover just about every semester. I can tell you that joining an organization, or wondering about my organizational affiliation is about #99 on their list of the "90 Most Important Things to Give a Damn About." Among my private students, most are so damaged and fed up with the nit-picking, misrepresentation and blatant b***s*** that they want nothing to do with ANY of this crap. I ask a lot of questions (NO, not YOU, Bruce!!). Some of its for myself and some of its for people who may be thinking something very loudly but not about to come out of lurk mode. As a result, I have it on reasonably dependable report from individuals that I respect in the KHF that even THAT organization is split between conservative traditionalists and more liberal commercial interests. So you will pardon me, I'm sure, if I ask for someone to please tell me what all these "alphabet soup" organizations have done for me? Take your pick-- KMAIA, KHF, IHF, WHDGD, WHRD etc., etc., etc.Don't expect me to be impressed with labels like "recognized by the Korean Government", or the "only legitimate organization" or "oldest and most highly respected". Korea is thousands of miles away and most of the personalities cited to me only have meaning because somebody else has mentioned that they SHOULD have meaning to me. ("oh, HE was National Champion three years in a row." Or "he taught Navy SEALS" or "he trained under ________". Excuse me, but what exactly is that suppose to mean to me?) OK. I got patches, and I got certs, and I got curriculum and I can attend seminars anywhere I please. That pretty much covers whatever I have seen advertised by the typical organizational affiliation. As I tell my students, "you are only as good as your last technique". Being affiliated with an organization doesn't change that. From what I have seen over the last few years membership in these highly touted organizations and a quarter will get you a cup of coffee in Moorecroft, Wyo. FWIW. Lots of great comments. We as instructors need to drill the water issue into our students heads. Living in South Texas (hot year round), I make this a regular issue and we need to make sure we set the example. I on sip a bottle of water throughout the evening as I teach, not only verbally telling them to drink water, but showing them to drink water. AND don't try to be so macho that we don't give water breaks throughout the workout. Gary Pieratt Castroville Karate Club www.askarate.com Success in life is largely the result of habit. (J. Hendricks) I live in Frederick. Suggestions: - No one in Hapkido has apparently heard of Choi. When you contact his school, a mysterious lady calls you and asks questions. Then your invited in for an interview. I say "baloney". - Good Frederick School= Master Clark's American Karate Academy on RT. 26, Sportsplex, near Walkersville. He is great with kids, teaches Eskrima, Tang Soo Do, and had a Judo instructor. He is a great guy ! Teachers are also fantastic. - Tang Soo Do= School over by RT 40. But, a little rough. - Eskrima= School over by RT 40 run by Dave Wink. Very rough but he trained under GM Gaja and Dog Brothers. Not necessarily family oriented. - Master Rankin school= I had a bad experience. Not family friendly. - Boxing School= great program run by Barry Bowden through Frederick Rec. Center. I enrolled in this school for a nominal $25 fee. This is the real deal. Not traditional martial arts, but get in your face and learn how to box. You can train 5 days per week. Facilities small and he needs students. If you want self-defense, and cut through the nonsense try this and tell Barry I referred you. I wanted to continue but the dusty road beckons. - Tae Kwon Do school located at Fort Detrick= part of a "cult" I have been told. Know the Master who trained this school's instructor. He told me to "avoid". - Golden Knights off of 270= heavily into fighting and sparring. Go to many tournaments and clean up sparring contests. - Fort Detrick Rec Center= has Aikido and Judo and day time Jiu-Jitsue (sic). I have no idea on quality of school. - Master JR West's affiliated schools= one in Westminister area and one in Johnstown on MD/PA border run by good instructor. I would go to that school if I remained in the area. A little distant from Frederick. - GM Kim's school= Hapkido in Rockville, MD. Brian on this list goes to that school. Well run school in traditional Hapkido fashion. There are a few others but this is a start. Frederick is a nice town. You will like it. Stay away from Patrick and Market Streets at night. The lady police are posing as hookers and soliciting unsuspecting johns. Then post your name in the paper the next day after your arrested. Just a tip although I am not into that jive. Let me be clear and state that my comments do not reflect negatively on Master Choi. However, I am a straight shooter and merely provide the facts presented or experienced by me. Therefore, caveat emptor. Joe, if you really want Hapkido and your gonna drive down to Gaithersburg, you may take 15 more minutes and go to GM Kim's school in Rockville. Or, go to the GM West school's in Westminister or Johnstown area. I think you will have a known quality school(s). I previously asked the infamous Glenn about Master Choi and he never heard of him. Everyone knows that Glenn, despite several unusual personality issues, has an absolutely brilliant perspective and knowledge of TKD and Hapkido instructors and lineages. In the Frederick area, Master Choi is not a big name. Too bad that Master Wickam retired. That dude was the real deal. Last comments on Master Choi. Will not be baited into heated discussions on this. Just my opinion which may be completely in error. Ciao, McD... Yahoo! It doesn't address the previous issue of the possible harmful side-effects of caffiene usage, but it does address some of the possible beneficial ones: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2002/07/020716075936.htm The study of caffiene and it's effects on the human body ,as well as the standard of 1/2 oz of water for every lb of body weight per day (by both supporters and opponents of the theory) are finally recieving the attention they deserve. Expect to see more research coming up in the next year or two. Some of the major institutes are beginning to show interest in the topic. Thats good news, in my book... Spent Wed. going to Itaewon and the War Museum in Seoul. Been there before, but enjoyed going again. Great museum for anyone who comes to Korea. If you have not been there, I recommend it highly. Itaewon is just a short walk from there to do some shopping. Thursday on the bus to come to Kangnung. New highway opened last Oct. so this was the first time made the trip without all the winding curvers going over the mountain pass just out of Kangnung. Sort of missed that road, even though when I used to take the busses regularly, it got old real soon. The old road would be anyone prone to motion sickness's worst nightmare. Got to town Thursday to go to the last HKD class of the day. Then spent all day Friday at the HKD school. Went to all 5 classes, and did some work between classes as well. Loads of fun, but boy am I sore. The hours in the gym getting my bench press back over 315 pounds lately did not prepare me for this kind of workout. :-) Worked on bettering my forms, little on bettering my falls, new kick series, Learned to do some techniques better. For those that have seen my video, with a couple techniques I do this quick reversal from a grab, where I end up holding his wrist and go into a technique. Worked on doing that when the opponent is holding you hard and you can't do the simple reversal. Using your body and stepping you negate his strength and can still do the reversal and then go into the technique. So a lot of stuff is just refining and making things better. Then I did learn a half dozen new techniques with hands and spent the last class of the day learning new belt techniques. Again, loads of fun, wish I was staying longer. :-) Yours in Training, Alain Burrese www.burrese.com --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Tom Kennelly" To: Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Good teacher Date: Fri, 26 Jul 2002 22:22:07 -0400 Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >GM Timmerman says: On the other hand, I have >seen my own students return from a seminar in another art (yes I encourage >this) with a better understanding of their own technique. One time my (TKD) Master Instructor brought in a high Dan Karate instructor who discussed sword techniques. Without going into great detail I saw many sword disarming techniques that I have practiced in Hapkido as controlling techniques. Wow, did the Karate Master do a great job of reinforcing my Hapkido training. I throughly enjoy the bridging of sword and Hapkido. --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 06:34:01 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] NK's Apology Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net US Welcomes NK's Apology Over Naval Clash July 26, 2002 The United States welcomed North Korea's expression of regret over last month's deadly naval clash with South Korea and its proposal for ministerial talks with Seoul, the Yonhap News Agency reported on Friday (July 26). However, Washington said there has been no decision to dispatch a high-level special envoy to Pyeongyang or for Secretary of State Colin Powell to hold talks with his North Korean counterpart Paek Nam-sun on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) set to open in Brunei Wednesday. A U.S. State Department official said the country is keeping a close eye on developments and expressed hope that the Norths apology would become the starting point for talks between Pyeongyang and other countries. Earlier, diplomatic sources close to the U.S. State Department said there was little chance of Powell meeting Paek for talks in Brunei unless the North shows sincerity in its relations with the United States. Washington was scheduled to send Jack Pritchard, ambassador for talks with North Korea, to Pyeongyang in mid-July but the plan was called off in the wake of the June 29 inter-Korean naval clash in the West Sea. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
