In my own dojo, my Sensei was run off by too much bullshit in the organization as well. It is too bad that Double standards and childish favoritism are a sad part of every sport. I am sure your training hall will miss you greatly Hal. On to lighter subject... Today, at the end of a private lesson, I had a guy walk into my school claiming he had attained the rank of 1st degree black belt in Tang Soo Do, Hapkido, and Jujitsu. Me being the openminded karate man I am decided to hear out what this guy had to say. well he then asked what style we did, and I said Chung Do Kwan TKD, which sometimes resembles Tang Soo Do. He then asked me if I could help me with his second degree form and started flinging his arms around like a monkey screwing a rooster. there was no karate in this boy at all. This guy had no idea. So I decided for the sake of the guys ego, I would run Pal Sek and see if he remembered that form. Nope. Hmmm...Okay, well what about some Pyong An's. He said he remembered those. Then I rigged up a form and gave it a fake name, he was all about it. It was then that I decided this guy was a crock. He did name his instructor. A guy from Baton Rouge named Wolf or something of that nature. Any body happen to have a phone number? I would like to find out more about this guy, and just what in the hell he is trying to do. It may not sound funny to you guys, but to see somebody SOOOO serious about their rank and accomplishments start fliping out in the middle of a warehouse with children watching just tickles the shit out of me. We truly are a dying breed. Yours in the Martial Arts, Charles Veuleman 2nd Dan Chittim Jordan Chung Do Kwan TaeKwonDo ===== ------------------------------------- L. Boyd" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] uh...Bruce? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Bruce, I'm not certain in what way you are reading what I wrote but it is definitely not the way that I am reading it. I've read it several times since you replied but I'm still not seeing the meaning you are getting. *Did* you read all of it? (BTW that's an honest question motivated by the emotion of surprise not a snippy retort motivated by anger.)I figure this is just one of those "internet text" problems yet to further clarify what I wrote I will risk writing a little more. The people of my acquaintance who ask, "How can the Koreans be so Anti-American?" are American teachers. I'm a Canadian. American history and international politics are only of marginal interest to me or our education system. We have our own history to learn. Still, as I am living in Korea and studying Korean martial arts I have taken the time to learn what I can. It's hard not to encounter the US in the modern history of Korea. Now these teachers are pretty indignant when they ask their questions about Korean anti-american sentiment for exactly the reason that you mention - these people with whom I work (and they are not an uncommon case) have not sought the perspective nor seemingly the knowledge of history to understand the reasons why the Koreans are so angry. This is why I continued with the observation that people need to address what the two countries' politicians, diplomats and negotiators are allowing to happen in Korea. What they ask with indignance I think should be asked with an open-mind and a desire to understand and that is precisely what I wrote. If they did the research, as you have done, then the answers would start to flow and a route toward a more benign co-operation might be found. I didn't include all the nasty details of Korean/American relations for two reasons. The first was that I am so sick of listeing to people bash the US that even on those times when I agree with them I don't want to participate in the rant. I posed my thought that people should take a closer, more honest look at the Korean reaction for themselves and learn why such a helpful and friendly people would go out of their way to make an issue out of everything the US Army does wrong in hopes that someone might. It's fine for you to bash the US, you're American. From me, it's just rudeness and I'd have to mend all the problems in Canada before I felt justified in doing so. The second reason I didn't lay out a list of why the Koreans are so wrapped up in anti-americanism is that it didn't further my point. I was merely adding some gloomy local colour to the article that Ray posted. I'm glad to see that you feel strongly about this issue and that you have taken the time to explore the history of your nation's foreign policies and their effects on other nations. One thing though, Bruce, please do not assume that I have not done so also. Ok? PS: Thanks for feeling that I have written intelligently in the past. I appreciate that even though you meant it to set up a point about my current reign as the heir-apparent to the crown of stupidity. You just KNOW its going to be a rough day when you come into work in the morning and find a notice from someone like Hal saying that he may be backing away from Hapkido practice.First off, let me own that Hal MAY be stepping back to recoup his energies and maybe he needs to break from things altogether, I don't know. But before we all go back to our separate paths it may be worthwhile to consider what just happened for what it actually is. 1.) Hal can be, pretty much a "type A" personality so don't expect some desultory, luke warm delivery in his classes. The message he brings to his teaching is "this is important and I am invested in this", and this leaves no room for a "going through the motions attitude." Its also an awful lot to ask of oneself on a daily basis--- an incredible highwire act without the net. 2.) I don't remember Hal mixing a lot of disparate arts into his Hapkido in the hopes of tailoring what he was teaching to coincide with the latest pop MA craze. Hal teaches Hapkido, not "hapkido-with-X-stirred-in-cuz-X-does-such&such-better." On a daily basis, then, he does not benefit from the Zeitgueist or "spirit of the times" to attract and hold peoples interest but must carry the integrity of his art to the people simply for what it is. Many of us know what its like to need to constantly promote our art just so that its mere existence is not smothered by a world of social interaction and technology. 3.) Hal has been teaching for a number of years, and a significant portion of those at a Y where his path is not always his own. I have taught at a Park District, presently teach at a college and have a reasonable (if deeply disturbed :-) ) following of private students. Years of having to constantly "sell" what you have to offer to others including program diredctors, department heads and the public in general have a way of grinding a person down as the initial glow of being THE MA authority begins to lose its luster. 4.) Hal is a person of principle and as such has held firmly to a traditional and barely flexible interpretation of what being a Hapkido practitioner is about. Speaking from personal experience I can tell you that there are a helluva lot more people with a "certain moral flexibility" than there are people of integrity. Working to challenge the eroding effects of urban legends, romantic misconceptions, wannabees and also-rans, myth, magic and politics, then, is not too different from the Little Dutch Boy with his finger in the dike. So what do these few points have to do with our readership this fine Thursday morning? Maybe nothing. Maybe you go back to your coffee and Krisp Creme donuts and figure "thats' life". OR-- Maybe you can see a bit of yourself in Hal and realize that what can happen to him can happen to you too. Maybe you can find time to reflect that this is the actual battle we KMA practitioners fight on a daily basis so that there is something of worth and integrity to pass on to the next generation. I am going to guess that Hal will be back after a bit-- or maybe not. Either way, what can happen to one leader can happen to any leader. I believe that the trick is not to back off on our workload but to reaffirm our commitment to the work we have before us. Good luck, Hal. Good Luck, everybody. The > citric acid in > > >Coke > > >removes stains from vitreous china. No it doesn't. Try it and find out......" I tried the toliet cleaning approach and got no results. I am going out on a limb to say that many of the things cited here may be the stuff of urban legends. I think the more important issues are the health concerns regarding sugar content, caffiene, phosphoric acid and carbonic acid. But before I start getting flames from the local Coke distributors let me say that I also have issues about many of the diet drinks with their scads of artificial preservatives and sweetners. Even the fruit drinks and teas have content labels which read like a third-year Chemistry course and I have a hard time believing these chemicals are completely benign to the human body, especially one under the stress of a training schedule. BTW: As long as we are on the subject has anyone bothered to research the dietary implications of milk or eggs lately? The only reason I raise this issue is that I think there is some "urban legend" stuff going on with these as well. When I was growing up in the 60-s the daily nutritional wisdom supported drinking 8 glasses of whole milk each day and a healthy breakfast included both cereal and a couple of eggs. Today I might have a couple of glasses of 2% a week and I only eat egg whites or egg substitutes. I'm wondering if any of our nutritional folks have the latest buzz on this. He has always done this with no dollar signs in his eyes. He is a genuine man, we have trained, argued, and laughed, that is what people do, and I have nothing but total respect for this man. I cannot believe some of the correspondence I have seen sent to him and others by so called Hapkido, TKD and Yudo Grandmasters? In all of the posturing, politicizing, and ego stroking I think these individuals have totally forgot what true training and martial arts respect is all about. Actually I don't think they ever had a clue about these traits to begin with. My hats off to Master Whalen for his many years of Hapkido service. It is sad to see a few individuals ruin the reputation of a whole organization, but in my eyes and I will say without a doubt that their actions and politics have created a huge stain on the KHF. I had great respect for that organization at one time, but after seeing how nothing has been done to stop certain individuals from monopolizing and disrespecting their own members I have nothing good to say about this org,, period. I know Master Whalen and I know he could never totally retire from Hapkido, it is too deep in his blood!! When and if you decide to return to Hapkido training my friend we will all be here. I would like to leave you all with something my dad used to say to me when he viewed things like this happen in the past,, he would say "remember son the biggest turds usually float to the top and stay there for awhile until someone see's how bad they smell and flushes them",,, I think this is appropriate in this instance and I hope that before too long there will be some serious flushing in the Hapkido world!!
