I am fairly new to MA, and would like to learn more of the common, and not so common practices of etiquette. I invite you to post rules you follow at your dojang, and the reason for having those rules. Examples might include entering and leaving the dojang, entering the practice area, respect to flags, greetings to instructors, talking during practice, addressing fellow students, standing at attention. Thank you. Yours in Training, Mr. Berkland 8th Gup This message (including any attachments) contains confidential information intended for a specific individual and purpose, and is protected by law. It's Korean, and tells the tale of a romance between a Governor's son and a courtesan's daughter in 13th century. It was subtitled, story was simple enough to follow, looked good, and gave me a reference about how 13th Korea MIGHT have looked. But what I found unusual, that the narrator (Who was telling this story to an audience on a stage in either modern-day or near modern-day Korea) SANG the entire story. He was only accompanied by a drummer, and they wore simple white robes. Is this singing (He was singing: to this uneducated American, I don't expect to see this guy on the record charts anytime soon...^_^) a story common in Korea, or just something the producers thought up for this movie? Just wondering.... I am just kinda tired of seeing this gem circulating as truth. Has anybody circulating this missive every tried marinating a T-Bone in Coke for two days? Obviously not. Have they ever tried devolving a nail? Nope. Heck, I couldn't even get it to devolve chicken bones. I like the idea of "show me on the mat" even though I am not Hapkido. Anyone can SEE skill. Also, I think it's terribly sad when politics interfer with ANY martial art style, and I have heard of it happening often ... so sad. I am glad Master Whalen taught (and hopefully will teach again) because it sounds like it is his calling. Hello Jose: The politics are not reserved for Hap Ki Do only, they are everywhere. Have you read some of the recent problems within Tae Kwon Do???? I strongly suggest that you continue to train in Hap Ki do, but DO look for a group that is without politics. There are several around. Sounds like Master West's group may be a good place to start. Best wishes. My students and I have trained with him in Jackson and my students would be shocked to know of the political backstabbing he went through, but if you asked one of them, they could not tell you what organization he is with, they would just talk about his technique and what they learned. I am amazed that the political nonsense that Master Whalen had to endure continued as long as it did. I also hope that this is a quickly passing situation and that those who caused him to make this decision now realize how ridiculous and damaging this kind of behavior is individually, and on the hapkido community in general. It is a crying shame that politics can force a respected martial artist like yourself to have to even consider leaving an art you love to share with others. I sincerely hope that, after taking some time off, you will return to show the world that politics cannot dampen your love for teaching Hap Ki Do. I wish you my sincerest best wishes, and we look for your return. Sincerely, Rudy W. While most (all?) of us reading this are probably adults (at least in terms of age), there is the possiblity that a few children are also subscribed.
