After lurking in the shadows for a long time I feel I must venture out this one time. Even though I am just a beginner, in my short martial arts training, I have been fortunate to have met some really fantastic martial artist. (I have a picture of me standing next to Dr. Kimm) I met master Whalen a while beck and was fortunate enough to see him on the mat, work with him on the mat and talk to him at length. Master Whalen is the real deal and I think it is a shame that he feels that he has to give up HapKiDo for a while. There are politics in all walks of life but it is a tragedy when a real martial artist who can get on the mat and prove himself leaves the art. Master Whalen you have earned my respect and I wish you all the best in life and wish you a speedy return to the art you love so much. I have been anxiously awaiting your return to the south and just so you know I still am. I know that HapKiDo is in your heart. This is the reason I fell you will return. This art is like a drug and once it gets in your system it is always there calling you. Wayne Watkins Ridgeland, Mississippi --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "J.R. R.'s Guitars ("we cheat the other guy and pass the savings on to you!"), and my stock in trade was building, repairing and restoring stringed instruments. While working on a very old and very valuable electric guitar, I ran across some metal parts that had been encrusted with 25 years of sweat, and the threaded areas of these parts were frozen solid. NOS (new, old stock) parts for this classic instrument were unavailable anywhere at the time, so I called my old friend Chip Todd, that I had worked with at Peavey Electronics in the guitar R&D dept., and asked him for his advice. Chip said to leave the parts overnight in some Cola, which I did, and when I returned in the morning, they were VERY clean. After some light lubrication, all the parts functioned much better than they had in many years, and the customer could not believe that they were the original stuff. J. R. Now it appears that a few people took the email seriously. I'm not sure anything that arrives by email should be taken seriously. Each to his own I suppose. Nonetheless, the rebuttals have not convinced me to drop water and take up drinking coke as my main liquid sustenance. Have a happy weekend. He was only accompanied by a drummer, and they wore simple white robes. Is this singing (He was singing: to this uneducated American, I don't expect to see this guy on the record charts anytime soon...^_^) a story common in Korea, or just something the producers thought up for this movie? < Craig, No, the sung story is one of the traditional folk story telling styles. If you liked this film try and find 'Sopyungje' which is excellent and also has some excellent singing in this style. Many years ago I watched a performance of one of these stories in London. There were only about 30 people (including my mother) watching the performance so we were really close. Even though we couldn't understand a word (the story wasn't translated) it was an exhilarating performance. Incidentally, wasn't the sung tale a major literary form in the West as well with Greeks, Vikings, Angles, Gauls, and American Indians, among many other races, all employing the form. Incidentally, some academics claim that there are similarities in Korean and American Indian musical styles, perhaps indicating echoes of the first tribes who crossed the land bridge from (what is now) Russia to Alaska. I do not know the full situation and would probably be equally frustrated and angered by what I understand your situation to be....however, doesn't the "bad" guy win and lessen Hapkido by your stepping down? While the concept of "legitimacy" by a Korean organization is a good thing, it is only a good thing when it is one of mutual respect. An organization that would treat one this way, regardless of the whining of one/group of individual/s, does not sound like one worthy of respect or association. There are other organizations if that is a desire or no organizations if they are not worthy of your trust and respect. You have your peer's respect and probably support; don't give up something you love and the positive effect it has on others for a few undeserving types. Sabaticals are good things, they provide perspective and time for healing, but do not retire...you would probably no longer view the world in the same positive way. Pil sung! Personal development, not superficial trappings. Be who you are and do what you love. As for the others; it all comes around. Respectfully.
