If you liked this film try and find 'Sopyungje' which is excellent and also has some excellent singing in this style. Many years ago I watched a performance of one of these stories in London. There were only about 30 people (including my mother) watching the performance so we were really close. Even though we couldn't understand a word (the story wasn't translated) it was an exhilarating performance. >> I will say that the storyteller really threw himself into the performance, and the crowd at the end of the movie (either naturally or through the script) was caught up in this story, even the young people. I guess what impressed me was it was a simple story that felt could have taken place in real life. It revolved around the love these two had, and it felt right. No high flying martial arts or bad dubbing (This was subtitled) Very little violence (A brief scene when the heroine was beaten for refusing the new Governor's advances, which switched back to the storyteller who sang the rest of the scene & when the corrupt officials were womped on by the Ethics Police), and didn't have the grainy look of a cheap Hong Kong costume drama. I am curious about seeing more historical dramas like this from Korea -- while I doubt there's many that had the feeling of quality that Chunhyang had, I wouldn't mind looking...... I have blended these various learned lessons and have formed my own etiquette rules I would impart if I had a Dojang or Dojo (which I don't): a. After a large burrito lunch at Yanez's Mexican Buffet take one beano pill to prevent the expulsion of gases. Those students who emit too many noxious fumes must kneel as if in a Roman Catholic church and say "Master Ken, I will not eat the burrito lunch prior to class ever again". Or, they will write that same comment on my blackboard like the Big Penquin required me to do at St. Elizabeth's elementary school in Ozone Park, Queens, NY. b. Toe nails will be inspected prior to class. Those exceeding 3 meters will be provided with a $2.99 toe clipper. Reimburseable to me. c. Underwear must be clean and not worn on three consecutive days. d. No bowing to any Korean Master only to Master Ken. e. All Russian students (and other Eastern European students) will be quizzed prior to class on their use of shower equipment. f. I will be called Grand Master Flash since I am a flash in the pan. g. All students will learn this fighting phrase "Don't push me cause I am close to the edge...I am trying not to lose my head...(author=Grand Master Flash). h. Chop sticks will be left at the curb. No eating in the Dojang. i. No picture opportunities with the Great Grand Master Flash. j. All students over 40 must submit their latest EKG results. k. Joey "Bada Bing" Grambino (also known as the Little Italy Assassin) will be my bill collector. l. All Ladies will refer to me as Grand Master Flash. m. Respect to the Flag is mandatory. n. Respect to Fags is also mandatory. No discrimination in my Dojang. o. Affirmative Action will be employed. Equal representation in my Dojang. However, the caucasian men will be required to scrub the toilets and wash the windows using the old Army tool= toothbrush. p. All children will be enrolled in my sub-contractors division, re: The W.C. Field's school for children, i.e., "Go away kid...ya bother me..." q. Late fees will be charged a high interest rate also known as "Vigerish" in Little Italy. Again, Joey Grambino will take non-payers out to lunch for a little al fresca type treatment. Just a few etiquette tips off the top of my head. I am certain I will think of additional tips. Cheers, Big Ken Yahoo! I've actually been looking forward to seeing you again at Master West's seminar some time in the future. It's already been said but I'll repeat that IMHO you are an excellent technician AND teacher. The arts will suffer a great loss if you fully retire. Having been through a sabatical of sorts due to a non-compete agreement with a former business partner, I can only say this. The passion for the arts was strong enough in me to keep my hands in the pie by teaching on Saturdays outside the prescribe radius. I also took this time to structure my requirements for my own Kwan. Had I not found Master West, I was prepared to strike out on my own, ignoring all the various NGB's and thier politics. I share this with you in hopes that you will find a way (in time) to "keep your hand in the pie." Respectfully, Charles Richards Moja Kwan Tang Soo Do Yahoo! This guy had no idea. So I decided for the sake of the guys ego, I would run Pal Sek and see if he remembered that form. Nope. Hmmm...Okay, well what about some Pyong An's. He said he remembered those. Then I rigged up a form and gave it a fake name, he was all about it. It was then that I decided this guy was a crock. He did name his instructor. A guy from Baton Rouge named Wolf or something of that nature. Any body happen to have a phone number? I would like to find out more about this guy, and just what in the hell he is trying to do. It may not sound funny to you guys, but to see somebody SOOOO serious about their rank and accomplishments start fliping out in the middle of a warehouse with children watching just tickles the shit out of me. We truly are a dying breed. <> Mr. Veuleman, Gonna have to meet you. Love your sense of humour. A few years back I was teaching in a fitness center and a guy came in who said he had earned a fourth dan in another art, but hadn't been training in several years. I invited him to workout with us. He barely survived the warm-up. On to basic kicking, our orange belt kids looked better than this guy. He managed to survive the basic hand drills without too much embarassment. For some strange reason, the guy never came back and never returned my calls ... We are indeed a dying breed ===== Yahoo! In my dojang, when we enter the dojang itself and the training area we bow. If we catch the eye of the instructor (if he is teaching the previous class, he might not see you), we bow again. We do the same leaving. As far as the flags, we will stand at attention (choon bee), a senior belt will say face the flags, bow. Then face the instructor, and bow again. Then we start class (meditation, then warm-ups). At the end of class, we will face the flags, instructor, then the most senior student, and bow (each in that order). We also use Korean term, but only for that. If we have a question for the instructor after class, we have to bow first then ask a question. I also have an etiquette question. We are not allowed to ask a senior belt to spar. My instructor said it was for etiquette purposes. But I wasn't asking him to "fight" per say. I was asking him for help/tips to improve my sparring. I mean, my instructor wasn't rude about it, but I think it's kinda weird not to be able to ask a senior for help. At least in my old dojang, they "wanted" you to ask for help. They wanted you to learn and get help when possible. What do you guys think? Dojang ettiquette in IMHO hinges on common sense respect for one another. I basically say,, bow when you enter, bow when you leave. Don't talk when someone is explaining a technique or giving instructions. Pay attention and practice hard. We do bow in the beginning and end of class to the instructor, American Flag, and to each other. My only pet peeve is when people come into the dojang with long fingernails and toenails!! If you are a martial artist and have long funky fingernails and toenails stop reading this and go cut them RIGHT NOW!! Maybe it comes from my wrestling background but I feel having funky nails that can scrap, infect, or cut someone during class is actually more disrespectful then forgetting to bow at the door. IMHO actions are always the true teller of what a person is all about. I mean I can sit and listen to someone talk and talk and talk but what I like to do is watch what they actually do. That is where there true character is revealed. I tell my students that what you do reflects on me, your fellow classmates and the institution you represent. When you screw up it is a ripple effect that affects all of us. So conduct yourself accordingly. When someone in an estabished Hapkido org. acts underhandedly like this then in my eyes it affects my opinion on that org. especially when these people are in a so called high level of authority. Master Whalen comes out of this no worse for wear in my eyes because as I say, I have "watched" his actions for over a decade now and I KNOW what he is all about. I wish we could put some coke on this situation and make it better like J.R. West did with the guitar parts!
