A couple of my personal favorites are 1) My car has a vanity tag on it that says HAPKIDO, and I was accosted by a guy in a gas station in Baton Rouge, following one of Dr. Kimm's seminars, that claimed 4th dan rank in HapKiDo, and when I asked him where he was from and who he was under, he said, "Jackson, MS, and I am the senior student of J. R. West". Imagine his surprise when I showed him my drivers license. My two assistants that were riding with me wanted to "test" his knowledge, but I thought a warning was good enough, and, 2) I had a person walk into my school that claimed to have a black belt from my school, and when I suggested that I had never laid eyes on him before, his answer was that the guy that owned West's HapKiDo Academy before me promoted him to black belt.......Good try!.....J. Although I teach that we are all "beginners", Wayne is rapidly approaching his 4th dan, and is a very great part of the continued success of my school, as well as the twice-yearly seminars here in Jackson, MS. For those that have been here, Wayne is the silver-haired, glassy-eyed guy that actually runs everything from behind the main counter, as well as sneaking away to help teach sessions that are being taught in his area. If anything good happens here, I can directly attribute it to him. I have known Wayne and his family for many years, and I know he would never identify himself on this list. Now he can stop lurking....J. R. For those of you that go to the martial arts clinic in Jackson, Wayne is the tall fellow behind the counter at Mater West's Dojang. coke vs. pepsi et. al. Like Andrew, I did not take the post about coke seriously, I thought they were very entertaining so I even included it in my dojang newsletter last month. However, my wife's car has marks from the windshield wipers I have never been able to remove and I tried using coke and a newspaper and it worked. Go figure. For those of you that do not know Master Whalen, he is a real hapkido player and a real 7th dan who once had his own kwan and was even authorized to have the kwan. He gave that up to be with one of his old teachers in Korea who was with a different organization, so naturally he switched alliances. A group of Americans who have their own private organization politically affiliated with his new organization decided to rock the boat and even tipped it over. That is what happened in a nutshell, at least in my view point. It just is amazing that grown men can act that way. Jere R. Smiles in seeing pictures and/or the names of the likes of West, West (yes, both of them), Timmerman, Booth, Trudeau, Janisse, DeWitt and Kelly. (sorry if I missed someone) The moral dilemma imposed by reading the short article about Dr. Laura :). (call 1-800-DRLAURA) Frowns from reading the article about Mr. Pellegrini. Perhaps the worst part, for me, was reading the words that "he is definitely the father of modern Hapkido in the United States". Seems like someone needs to have a serious chat with the author of this sad statement... Grandmaster Timmerman's Wisdom: Hello Jose: The politics are not reserved for Hap Ki Do only, they are everywhere. Have you read some of the recent problems within Tae Kwon Do???? I strongly suggest that you continue to train in Hap Ki do, but DO look for a group that is without politics. There are several around. Sounds like Master West's group may be a good place to start. Best wishes. Sincerely, Rudy Hello Jose. I absolutely concur with Grandmaster Rudy Timmerman's comments and wisdom. Being involved with both Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do, I too have seen very good martialartists destroyed by immature, jealous and hateful individuals. I have struggled along for sometime myself but "never gave up." When I was a that point in my martial arts career where I thought for sure it was just about over, I met Grandmaster Rudy Timmerman and my entire MA career changed. This man's wisdom and kindness along with the introductions to other Martial artists (GM J.R.West, GM E. Humesky, Master Terry and many others)has allowed a growth for me and my students beyond anything I could ever have imagined. I enjoy teaching and helping others, that's why I teach, write, do videos etc. But I could stop all that and just train to improve myself and be fine, since that is all I really NEED. I think some people should take a look at themselves and figure out why they are demanding respect, etc. Why they are not comfortable enough with themselves that they have to put others down and create problems to make themselves feel more important. >> I couldn't agree more with this statement! If you get on the mat, sweat, learn, push yourself to your physical limits on a regular basis then you get a whole new view of the world and yourself. How are you going to refine and improve your skills if you are sparring people you can constantly take out? Not that you can't learn things from junior belts (I say this from experience) .This can also be a humbling experience for the occasional student who might need an "attitude adjustment". --__--__-- Message: 11 From: CKCtaekwon@cs.com Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2002 18:26:18 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Hair Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 8/2/02 12:28:24 PM Central Daylight Time, the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net writes: > Straight and simple stuff, very much like ours. Geumgang Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Two Koreas Open Talks at Mt. Geumgang August 2, 2002 In a move to jumpstart sputtering inter-Korean relations, South and North Korea kicked off a three-day meeting at the North's mountain resort on the east coast Friday (Aug. 2) to prepare for ministerial talks. The four-member South Korean delegation attended a banquet hosted by their North Korean counterparts after unpacking at Geumgangsan Hotel, which is also the venue for the meeting. The Mt. Geumgang meeting, the first direct inter-Korean contact since Seoul sent an envoy to Pyeongyang in April, aims to revive stalled dialogue between the two sides by setting up senior-level talks that have been suspended since November. The delegates, led by Rhee Bong-jo, deputy unification minister for policy, traveled aboard the Hyundai cruiser, Solbong, to the North Korean port of Jangjeon. Accompanying the delegation were nine support personnel and six journalists. Prior to his departure, Rhee said that the talks would feature such issues as the reconnection of a cross-border railway and reunions of separated family members. Earlier in the day, Unification Minister Jeong Se-hyun hinted that the delegation would urge North Korea to take measures to prevent a repeat of a deadly naval clash near a western maritime border. "During the working-level talks, they will mainly discuss how to prepare for ministerial talks. But our delegates will cope with the (naval clash) issue in consideration of public expectations," Jeong said, seeing off the delegation at the Office of South-North Korea Dialogue in Seoul. To avoid accidental clashes near the disputed Western sea border, the South Korean delegation will propose an inter-Korean military hotline be established during the period of salvage operations for a sunken Southern patrol boat, according to sources. The South Korean military will embark on the two-month salvage operation on Monday to raise the sunken warship and search for the body of a missing sailor presumed to be trapped inside. Since the landmark inter-Korean summit two years ago, the Koreas have held four rounds of reunions for thousands of family members separated since the 1950-53 Korean War. They also started work on reconnecting a rail link that stretches between Seoul and Shinuiju across their heavily armed border, but North Korea suspended work in the winter of 2001 amid its tension with the United States. The South-North relations deteriorated because of a deadly naval clash on June 29, which caused heavy casualties on both sides. The resumption of talks was agreed on Tuesday after North Korea voiced regret for the clash and offered to hold working-level talks to prepare for senior-level talks. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
