I posted a saying from him a few posts back, and since all of the cross training info has been circulating, I figured this might fit as well. "Let me stress to the membership that they keep an open mind and choose from the carious styles of karate the things that work for them. Fight rough and tough so as to show the matchless American fighting ability. The daydreamers and romantics are those who feel they must copy some other country's fighting spirit." These are the words of 8th Degree black belt, Master Atlee Chittim. So what does that mean? Mix 1 part kung fu with 2 parts caporeia and Voila! TaekKyun? No, not to make your own stuff, STAY WITH YOUR STYLES TRADITIONS!! but don't be afraid to push the limits of that tradition also, I think. In our style, Chung do Kwan, it is very obvious that it is shotokan influenced. Old KMA are just like that. But you don't see alot of people running around with the short uniforms like we wear either. (our pants are hemmed at right below the knee, and tops right below the elbow, very short uniforms) Maybe that is tradition, maybe it was picked up as a 'new' thing some time ago. We practice a form we call Iron Claw, which is version of a Shorei Ryu form, Go Pai Sho. Maybe we do this cause we think we can do it better, maybe we do it to thank Master Robert Trias for helping us reorganize in the 60's. But in anycase, the short uniforms, and 'american named forms' all give us an American identity, within an Asian culture. In your own towns and systems, I encourage you black belts to find the true karate men that for no personal benifit are willing to guide you to a better understanding of your art by explaining theirs or showing their arts beauty, then take it back to your dojo/dojang and make yourself a better, more knowledgeable martial artist. I ramble.....Therefore I am... :D Yours in the martial arts, Charlie Veuleman 2nd Dan, Chittim/Jordan Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do ===== ------------------------------------- L. I haven't seen any e-mails about the other side of the coin, so I thought I'd mention the dangers of drinking too much water. Hyponatremia, lack of sodium, can occur when one drinks too much water. This condition can be fatal. By all means, stay hydrated, but don't go overboard by drinking more than you sweat during exercise. (This e-mail has not been approved by the FDA. It seems to be sugar water, but it does contain 35 mg of Sodium per 8 fl oz serving/gulp. Does it generate more power, > is it easier to teach/perform? wrt the other (another) style of axe kick I mentioned, it is my personal favorite. But it does seem to require more flexibility. It is nice as it starts out like many other kicks, i.e. the knee comes up and forward like a front kick or side kick or ... Then the leg extends straight up before coming down. Whoop!! There it is! He then pushed his way through a private tkd organization (I won't mention it here, but it is one of those private tkd orgs that uses Japanese terms, such as dojo, not dojang, etc.) Jere R. Hilland >>> Careful Grasshopper, I like our funny words. And I like our American Replacements. Master Atlee Chittim one said "if learning korean or japanese will make me a better fighter, I'll learn both" He didn't need either to spank some booty Texas style.
