At this stage it would be great to let my kids (Anna 5 & Rick 8 ) experience TKD training in another Dojang / country. It would be great for them to see differences / comparision in TKD training techniques. The kids are only young, I truly believe phyically and spirtually development should start at a young age, with the right guidance they will develop into better people Anna has only commenced her TKD training in the last few months, whilst Rick has been studying martial arts since he was 4. He is a devoted student dedicated to the Arts and his training. Could you please let me know if there are any Dojangs in these area's that would allow the kids to train during our brief period we are in the United State. Thanks Very Much Regards Mario --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 02:14:35 +0200 From: barends@gbugroep.nl To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] chae dan vs. sa dan Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Can anyone explain to me te difference between a 'chae dan bob in' and a 'sa dan bob in'? What could a Green Belt possibly have > to teach that anyone would care to learn? Several years ago when the PKA used to have fights on TV all the time, one of the PKA champs was a guy from Canada. I think his name was Jean-Yves Theriault (sp?). He had only gotten to yellow belt in the dojang (err, dojo for Charles :), yet he kicked everyone's butt and big time. Yes, he was a good boxer. People take martial arts for a variety of reasons. If they wanted to learn how to fight in the ring PKA style, I'd say that yellow belt had a lot to offer (assuming he could teach). No, I am not in favor of lower belts (including lower Dan ranks) running a dojang. Yet there are likely to be a (very) few cases where some might actually have something to offer. Just my $0.02... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Digest, /Bruce, Hilland and Rudy I think alot of people really got rubbed the wrong way over a little thing like language. My ramblings, now that I read them with more than the 2 hours of sleep that I wrote them in, do sound odd, and go back and forth to the point, but I still stand behind them. Anyone who would call out a fellow black belt for calling a school a dojo, ...man that just doesn't sound like a respectable, humble black belt IMO. You do what is the norm for that area, and If you mess up, NOBODY is going to beat your ass. Grow Up. It is a big peice of open space, aquired usually through much strife and hard time (anyone here that owns a 'school' knows it can be tough sometimes) and perseveres through it all to teach martial arts to students. It seems to be a more personal/regional choice of calling it a dojo or dojang. So, if calling it a 'dojo' rubs you the wrong way, how about calling what we do 'Korean Karate'? Oh my, I bet someone got pissy there. And I am sure a 6-4 8th dan could care less about beating up another high ranking black belt. That is karate movie stuff. Also, you say I don't respect a 'traditional' dobak? Where did you get that from? I respect it very much. 28 pounds of 14 ounce cotton can be quite a workout. We just cut ours down to about 26. It is Louisiana you know. And as far as calling a full length Gi traditional, who knows. I have heard some say the short uniforms are traditional, and some say long unifoms are traditional. It kinda goes along with dojo/dojang/school. you do what is the norm in your area, and try to be as respectful as possible when you travel abroad. Bruce hit it on the head by just avoiding the language completely. And as far as rudy's comments, I could almost hear the tone you must have been thinking when you wrote that. Cute. Anyway, lighten up guys. My emails are generally written with a smile on my face, not a hot fire poker in my hand. But I do thank you for your input, we all learn from each other I think. Bye. For this I apologize, but there are so many who know & understand far more than I, that I've followed the "one minute rule." Well, maybe the "3 year rule." Whatever:) Anyhoo, my name's Denise Lee. I'm a student/teacher of Tang Soo Do. Have been a member of the TSD-SBDMDK Fed., the TSDMGK Assoc., & am now just another independent TSD practitioner/teacher. I'm most excited to be able to arrange attending Master West's upcoming 17th International HapKiDo Seminar in a couple of weeks & really look forward to meeting & training with as many "listka" (& non-listka) as possible. Now to the question. I have a student, a young, physically skilled, "hungry" 2nd Dan who's stationed at Moody AFB in GA. He's really anxious to start training again, but is having trouble finding a school near the base. My understanding is that it's near Valdosta? Do any of you know of any good TSD, HapKiDo, JuJitsu, Aikido or Judo schools in the area? I tried a Yahoo search, but only found 1 TKD school. TKD is wonderful, but at this stage of his training, I'd love for him either to stay with TSD if necessary, but preferably expand his horizons with the other arts -- rather than learning a different (TKD) approach to kicking & punching. I mean NO elitism by my comment, please. He's really not interested in competition. He just wants to train. He grew up in TSD & was just beginning to grasp the nuances of the concepts involved in our "yu sul" techniques, so a school that focuses more on that aspect of the m/a would be in his best interests. Thank you all so much for any help you might be able to offer. justdenise "You will be what you practice." intentlee@snet.net --__--__-- Message: 8 From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 07:46:21 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Word stuff Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Jere: ".....Ironically, just this week and fellow came in to my dojang (I teach hapkido full time), an American from Ohio, and started speaking Korean and Japanese mixed together, he said he studied some form of kempo (an art I am not familiar with), ......." Since the mat room I use for class at the college where I teach was constructed by Aikido folks, we Hapkido people help with its maintanence. Its not unusual for Aikido students who recognize me while we are cleaning the room to address me as "Sensei" only because thats the term they are familiar with. I am quite sure no disrespect is intended. In my own classes its usually a matter of addressing me as "Mr. Sims." As I mentioned before I place very little or no emphasis on Korean terminology in my classes. However, Jere, you bring up a real issue for me when you mention the fella who was mixing Korean and Japanese terminology. Somebody questioned me a while back about taking pains to split hairs about seemingly paltry details and maybe I do belabour some points ad nauseum. However, I believe that if someone chooses to pursue a particular course of action it is fair to expect that they will at least do it well. I don't consider mixing and matching Japanese and Korean terminology as a sign of "egalitarianism". To me its just ignorance, pure and simple. I still have a copy of a manual from the North American Hapkido Assn. in which Mr. David Weathersley mixed and matched Korean, Chinese and Japanese terminology and technique. I am quite sure there were many who might have applauded this testiment to the idea that "all martial arts are the same." Maybe they are, but they are certainly not all expressed the same. Seems like there are an awful lot of folks who have decided that labels like "kung fu" and "kempo" and "karate" are broad enough to absorb just about any kind of details one cares to throw in the pot. I would be loath to think that Hapkido has fallen into this same trap (Pelligrini not withstanding). You were probably nicer to "Mr. Kempo" than I, Jere. Had it been me in the situation I probably would have asked him to come back later, after he had decided with side of the Sea of Japan he wanted to draw his traditions from.
