I don't understand if Seniors and BB's are there to teach etc., why they would indeed send someone to a lower rank for the answer. Why not just skip the middle man, go directly to the lower belt, (the one who will end up providing answer anyway) and allow the Senior and Black Belts to do something else? Why not just ask your instructor or the first higher rank student and ask them? Seniors and Black Belts surely need to learn as well?" Rita, I'm positive the note you referred to, and I know my subsequent comments, did not suggest that BBs have nothing to learn. We always have something to learn; and that to me is what is exciting about practicing MA. I believe the point is that one of the things senior/black belts need to learn is how to teach. From my observations, this skill comes easily for some, but is very difficult for others. In any case, one of the best ways to improve this ability to impart knowledge effectively to others is through practice. IMHO, teaching is a dynamic thing and you need to practice how to mix praise and correction to most effectively movtivate the people you are helping. And you can't get this practice if you always delegate the teaching opportunities to more junior belts. Hope this was to the point. Thanks, Eric Schule --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: 12 Aug 02 10:16:51 -0500 From: MW To: the_dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] RE>etiquette Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Rita, My instructor has always said: "why ask a colored belt when you can ask a BB? why ask a 1st dan when you can ask a 2nd? etc...." Go to the highest rank possible as "they have been there" and will be able to teach you at your appropriate level and abilities. But remember , this applies only if they are teaching/helping run a class. If they are training pls. wait until after the class. I feel a true BB should never have a problem with staying a little late to help. Again, this is how things are done at our dojang. All of our best wishes and prayers from the Brainerd Tae Kwon Do - Hapkido students, my wife Brenda and I, go out to this exceedingly humble and compasionate man. Happy Birthday Grandmaster Timmerman and thank you for the truthfulness and honesty which you have continuously demonstrated throughout your life. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 13:14:00 -0500 From: Kirk Lawson Organization: Heapy Engineering To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net ("THE$DOJA@SMTP {the_dojang@martialartsresource.net}") Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Difference in Aikido styles Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > From: JSaportajr@aol.com > Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 11:12:27 EDT > To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Difference in Aikido styles > (Rupert, are you still > around?) > Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > > I have recently encountered something that caught my > interest. Can any > one tell me more about what different styles of Aikido there > are and what are > the essential differences between these styles in technique? There are somewhere around 6 or 8 different *MAJOR* variations of Aikido and countless substyles. Their differences range from philosophy to whether or not there is "competition" to focus (meditation/ki, combat, tradition, etc.) of training, to how techniques are taught. It's a smorgasbord. See the Aikido Basic FAQ and The Aikido Advanced FAQ > I had > a jujitsu > teacher who had a friend who was an AikidoKa. This person was > attacked and he > threw the attacker fairly far and turned his back to walk > away. The attacher > pulled out a gun and killed him. Does this friend have a name? I've heard this story a lot but never found an actual traceable attribution. I'd be interested in verifying this particular story. > Third, with multiple > attackers, you have to > get rid of the first attacker and make sure he does not get > up to fight again > while you are facing the second attacker. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> This is good to know. The thing is that several of the demonstrators were touted as being master instructors in CDT. With the amount of instructors being certified in a small period of time, is there a quality control issue here? As for the hot air issue...the CDT demo was actually one of the highlights (for me at least) of the entire demo! I don't know about any other sport, but for Taekwondo it still takes 4 corner judges to operate the system used for olympic sparring. A point is still only awarded if a majority of the judges press the button within a short time period. The judges will only press the button if they believe one of the players scored the point. What type of scoring does fencing use? I am not familiar with fencing, so I wouldn't know. Tempratures were nice, and we were alle in a good mood. It is really nice to spend a weekdn with about 2000 Koreans. They actually have knives an forks now at the headquarters (not that I would use them) which I've never seen on my previous visits to Korea. -- kind regards, Klaas Barends http://www.hapkido.nl/ --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
