A Hong Kong film from the 70's. I thought some members of the DD would get a kick out of it. The clips are large ( 7.7 and 18 mb) so unless you have broadband you may be info a long download. Hope you enjoy them. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have been reading about various teaching approaches, asking 2 ranks higher, the "responsibility" that comes with rank, etc. I understand the points that were raised, and see the intent and inherent value in them, however, I am full support of students asking and receiving their guidance from an INSTRUCTOR. As many have mentioned, instructing is an art in itself. Putting someone "on the spot" or forcing them into a role they are not comfortable with could potentially disorient that student, as well as give the lower rank misinformation. I encourage students to ask questions in class so that everyone can benefit from the answer. This promotes the confidence of seeking answers from one who is qualified to instruct the student, and recognizes that others may have similar questions. The instructor(s) should be more aware of each student's individual situation, and can help them work within their abilities. I have seen too many "green" instructors who want to teach the entire form in one evening, who expect every move of that entire form to be perfect, resting on top of text-book stances......We all know that learning is not an immediate process, that we build upon a solid foundation laid over time, but allowing time for individuals to become comfortable with new techniques before fine-tuning and perfecting them. This is not to say that other ranks are not "allowed" to help each other, I am just afraid that if general policy is that the first line of information is someone who has been around "a little longer" than the student who has the question, you may wind up with two students who have more questions: the newer Gup will probably want to verify with their Instructor that they got the right information, and the 2 rank higher student may have continued questions about how to teach a certain technique/person. I would like to think new students sign-up to learn from someone who has the most possible experience, and not just whoever they find in the Dojang. I don't mean to be disrespectful to those folks who encourage this, I am just on the other side of the fence when it comes to helping the students, and in the help that I receive (my instructor has a better understanding of my abilities and those things that challenge me more than anyone else.....). Respectfully, in the spirit, Mark --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Morgan James To: 'Dojang Digest' Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 07:17:19 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: CDT Stuff Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net CDT has no "strikes" per say as most self-defense systems do. For example, there are no kicks, punches, elbows, knee strikes, etc. During my own TMI course I threw only one punch and it was directed towards the inner arm, not to the nose, throat, groin, or solar plexus. CDT is simply grabbing and applying pressure to temporarily shut down the nervous system. I agree, accidents can happen, but in CDT an accident would mean missing a particular nerve center with a controlling motion, not accidently landing a palm strike in an upward motion to the end of the nose..... Take care. At the opening ceremony in the Sheraton Walker Hill Hotel, eastern Seoul, representatives of the two Koreas also concurred on continuing exchanges between civilians, holding a joint youth forum and womens roundtable next month. Let us eliminate all elements of war on this land and win national peace and well-being read a joint statement at the opening ceremony in the hotels Jade Garden. Flags representing one Korea flew over the venue, instead of official South and North Korean ones, in a sign of harmony. I almost forgot, today is the seventh (day of the lunar month of) July, when the star Altair meets the Vega after a year-long separation, Rev. Han Sang-ryol said, referring to a folk tale of lovers uniting. Controversies over North Korean works for the art and photo exhibition, some of which were deemed to bear obvious political messages, led to an 80-minute delay of the event. The North Koreans strong insistence on finalizing the dates for the youth forum from Sept. 7 to 8 also baffled South Korean organizers, as it involves the participation of the outlawed student group Hanchonryon. South Korea on Wednesday gave in to the Norths demands to allow Ryo Won-ku, the Norths highest-ranking female official, to visit her fathers tomb in Seoul. In a situation with the Koreas like a bisected organism, the pain is also great for a writer whose realm is the national mentality, the pain has been too great, southern writer Hyon Ki-yong said. The joy upon seeing the lost half is just as huge. Others, however, were disappointed at the restrictions imposed on North Korean visitors and South Korean masses. Twenty thousand students and workers held a separate festival in Konkuk University in Seoul. Thousands of North Koreans cheered for us in Pyongyang last year, but our government this year has been too careful, said Kim Young-ki, a leader of Chodoism, an indigenous religion. Last years first-ever joint Aug. 15 event in Pyongyang gave way to a conservative backlash in South Korea, which condemned the political behavior shown by some Southern delegates. A joint song-and-dance show at the Kayagum Hotel midday and a North Korean musical performed at the Convention and Exhibition (COEX) in southern Seoul entertained the 500 South Koreans, with the latter event having been televised nationwide. The two Koreas will engage in a debate session and issue-oriented gatherings in nine categories this morning. After a palace excursion and closing ceremony on Friday, the 116 North Koreans are to fly back to Pyongyang on Saturday. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
