I did not think Charlie was talking about the hapkido chungdokwan as his website stated taekwondo. Although I received a 4th dan in taekwondo in '91, it is an art I seldom practice, but if memory serves me it is several generations removed from the Japanese parent art, regardless of the kwan. Kongsoodo became taesoodo and that became taekwondo. With the exception of those who studied under Master Lee and are directly a part of HIS organization, all of the chungdokwan taekwondo folks I have met are affiliated with the WTF. I believe that is due to Ed Sell's but I may be wrong. It sounds like the chungdokwan dojang you are familiar with are affiliated with the late Master Lee. Jere R. In 2000 we were in Korea when Master West had his birthday so he had over 30 1st - 9th dan hapkido folks singing happy birthday on the bus, including Dr. Kimm He Young and Master Booth. I will be teaching classes from 6 am till 9 pm on my birthday, so the celebration will be well deserved Saturday afternoon! Jere R. He will tell you where the door is and you have to get there without serious damage. You can attack one then use him as a shield/ strike one, cirle the other strike the last/ strike , strike , strike (which is very tiring and extremely difficult) etc....... The strategy is an art itself michael whalen KSW --__--__-- Message: 4 From: SallyBaughn@aol.com Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 15:17:45 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Electronic Scoring Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Mark Smith wrote: << Taekwondo is also working on this type of scoring system, but it is a slightly more difficult problem. First, the force of the blow is important. Second the weapons, (feet and hands) are impractical to "wire". Thus, even if a chest protector that can correctly sense the force of a clean strike versus a push (not easy at all) is constructed, there is still no way to tell if the contact was made by the foot or the shin. There is also the problem of the amount of force. Clearly, the amount of force required by to heavyweights to score a point should be more than for two fin weights, but how do you calibrate the force and make sure it is exactly the same for both competitors. Though there are some good prototype systems available, the consensus is that it is still to easy to "cheat" the system. The fear is that the electronic sensors will reward techniques that are not considered "good" taekwondo. >> Mark, thank you for a very reasoned and reasonable explanation of how the Taekwondo hogu might work electronically and why it might be very difficult to make it work as desired. I appreciate it. I certiainly hope, though, that a lower rank who did not know or was not sure would be careful to send the questioner "upstream." > This is not to say that other ranks are not > "allowed" to help each other, I > am just afraid that if general policy is that the > first line of information > is someone who has been around "a little longer" > than the student who has > the question, you may wind up with two students who > have more questions: the > newer Gup will probably want to verify with their > Instructor that they got > the right information, and the 2 rank higher student > may have continued > questions about how to teach a certain > technique/person. The verification issue is a pretty good reason not to make this "policy" IMHO, but there are certainly cases where this should not apply. A white belt should be able to trust a red belt for advice on a front kick, for example, without feeling the need to verify (yes, it was an extreme example). While it may make more work for the instructor, isn't it beneficial to have students asking questions about how to teach? That should make them better instructors later on, methinks. I also know that as a higher-gup (and now as a blackbelt) I appreciated someone asking a question I didn't have the answer to: It pointed out a gap in my knowledge that we could both go to the instructor to remedy. (More work for him, of course.) > I would like to > think new students sign-up to learn from someone who > has the most possible > experience, and not just whoever they find in the > Dojang. This is a good point, but a lot of new students don't really understand the nature of instructor-as-student (at least, I hope people are continuing to learn), so I wouldn't expect them to understand student-as-helper/question-answerer. > Respectfully, in the spirit, > Mark ===== Grant D.
