Thanks for clearing that up. Your answers sound pretty reasonable to me. Like I said, no disrespect intended. Some people take offense to getting asked particular questions when they shouldn't. By the way, Morgan is my last name, not first. But, that's ok. You can call me Ray, you can call me Jay..........(you probably don't remember that..) Ray: I'm not "beating up" the Natchitoches boyz with my questions. I respect what they are doing. Alot of my early CDK training was the same. Later. She wanted to know of any colleges, on the East coast, that offer TKD or martial arts in general, as part of their cirriculum for which credits can be earned. Like instead of taking a Physical Education course you could take Martial Arts I, or whatever. I'm pretty sure that Radford University in Virginia does this with Dr. Jerry Beasley running the show down there.......I think. I would appreciate any and all responses to this so that I may supply my parent as much information as possible. Thanks. They are new TKD students and have been practicing for less than a year. Their instructor teaches them light contact and control when sparring in class. Some of the videos we have viewed show underbelts sparring using full contact while in tournaments. Is this something I should be concerned about? Thanks for your help, A PROUD Parent --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Lasich, Mark D." If it is a safety issue, explain the danger of wearing them. I have seen cases where even with sparring head gear on, one lady had her earring come loose and tore the ear lobe. Not a good situation. The posts are sharp, stones could come loose leaving the sharp prongs exposed. Broken pieces could fly into someone's eye, or could be stepped on causing one to lose balance, fall, or get cut, etc. Earrings are quite easy to spot. It is the ATA policy across the board that they are not permitted in class or tournaments. It is amazing how may people don't even consider the potential risk to themselves and others. I have been telling more and more men to remove their earrings before allowing them to begin a sparring match at tournaments! Now, what about OTHER body piercings? Those are not as easy to spot, but probably even MORE dangerous to the wearer. I figure it is part of the uniform, to NOT wear jewelry, and encourage others to consider it that way as well. This shows respect for themselves and for others. The only thing that is allowed in the ATA is a flat wedding ring, having no stones. HOWEVER, one testing I was performing double knifehand speed breaks, and through all the excitement the technique was not 100%! So, today I still have an OVAL wedding ring as a reminder! Yes, I bent my wedding ring on the technique! So, I even remove that now - especially for board breaks! I have been known to actually take my watch, chain, ring off in front of the class before we bow in. Nothing better than setting expectations by example! Once you get to black belt, you can wear purple suits with polka dots if you REALLY want to. The only exception he has is wearing the camo suit... Thinks it sends the wrong message about martial arts (and I never said a word about it before, but I agree with him and am glad he said it). We went to one school that had the wear what color you like option and a 10-year-old girl's mother dyed a suit PINK for her daughter. Oh my! The instructor allowed it, but the rule was soon changed to allow any color you could purchase from a martial arts supply catalog. : ) --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: 22 Aug 02 08:21:28 -0500 From: MW To: the_dojang Subject: [The_Dojang] RE>Soo Ki /Jah se / sudo Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In KSW: -Soo Ki: any hand strike -Jah Se : stance/posture -sudo : knifehand strike (yuk sudo- reverse / yup sudo-side / ssang sudo-double hwejun- circling etc....) michael whalen --__--__-- Message: 9 From: SallyBaughn@aol.com Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 09:26:31 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Mr. Veuleman's Web Page Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >From the profile: << Sensei Veuleman enjoys swimming, eating, and traveling to eat and swim >> Just a little advice, Charles... Do a lot more swimming than eating. What you can do that just slips away at 21 can begin to add up around your waist by 31 and you don't even want to consider what it can look like after 41. : ) Comment about the short gi: If Nachitoches is as hot as New Orleans, I would think short sleeves make perfectly good sense. This is an example of not following tradition blindly, but adapting sensibly to the time and place. --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 22 Aug 2002 06:37:33 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [The_Dojang] Korean Karate Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net >To refer to TaeKwon-Do as "Korean Karate" is not only ridiculous and misleading >but also insults the integrity of all the existant independents arts of both >Japan and Korea (albeit historically sharing brotherly roots). I used to get hungup over it, too, but I got over it. Now I like the term Korean Karate.
