Sometime in the near future I am hopeful to bring Master West and his crew to Houston for a seminar as well, we will see what 2003 brings. Yes, myself and at least 4 of my students will be attending the Jackson March seminar and plan on making it an annual trip for BMAC. I look forward to seeing you then, maybe we will have to find some talk time at McAllister's or over a cold one. Thanks you for keeping in touch. Michael Tomlinson I can't correct you. For me, I started TKD a year ago to get off the couch. The training is a great workout, my dobok is soaked when I go home, and I'm learning something while exercising. The belt to me is just a mark of time. A new colored belt means I've been working out more and have learned some more skills. At the same time, I had started my 6 year old son to give him some self defense skills and for something for the 2 of us to do together. It has been a lot of fun for the 2 of us and I have been killing a lot of birds with one stone. Being 50 years of age, the process of embracing TSD into my life is challenging. My request to you is simple. How do you maintain the discipline and focus outside of the dojang? Do you use a type of training journal? Any information concerning the above would be greatly appreciated? They are very hard to do but the benefit is that you are getting a two for one deal, when you do your sit ups you also build up your legs and "hooks" as they are called, the hooks are your feet and ankles,, your partner also builds up his back and his base up position by holding you up during your exercise. We used to do these all the time in wrestling practice and in some of the grappling programs I've been in,, I have never heard of a kicking school using them but that's ok with me,,, try them out, I don't think they will hurt your back or kill you, but they are hard to do and take some time to get used to,,, I used to hate being the partner to some of my heavyweight friends,, I got more tired holding them up then when I did the sit ups!! It's only a modified sit-up for crying out loud. I have seen Ms. Slocum at several TKD tournaments and if it is true that an instructor is only as good as his students, then her instructor must be top-notch. "course I don't know that, so I will not presume anything. What I DO know, from seeing with my own eyeballs, is that Ms. Slocum is a dedicated, enthusiastic student who seems to have a mind of her own and doesn't seem like the sort of person who would allow herself to be "abused". Repeat after me.... "it's only a sit-up. It's only a sit-up." In my most humble, and often erroneous, opinion, conditioning, be they sit-ups, push ups, jumping jacks, burpees (squat thrusts), Lemon squueezers, or what-have-you, has a definite place in the Dojang. Not because "it was good enough for me so its good enough for you" but simply becasue it's just plain GOOD for you. that's about a nickels worth so I'll shut up now. (okay, one more penny) The "meatbag" comment was un-called for. dave weller student wtf tkd "Practice a thousand hours and you learn self discipline. Saturday, November 16th, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Master J. R. West, president and chief instructor of the USKMAF will be conducting a hapkido seminar at the dojang of Master Instructor Anthony New. Click on http://www.awnewhapkido.com/Seminar/J_R_West_Seminar.htm and you will find a flyer about the seminar, a registration form, hotel information and a map to the dojang. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Master West, Mr. New or myself and we will be happy to answer them. You will not find anything but traditional hapkido at its finest. The seminar is open to practitioners of all styles. Jere R. Sorry, Ali; my fault. I should have recognized the e-mail address. Glad the info was of some interest. GM Myung is not without his faults (SEE: introductory historical notes in his books) but between managing his organization, publishing scads of books on Hapkido, organizing his curriculum and producing his videa tapes he has probably done about all anyone can do to make sure that Hapkido makes it to another generation. Watching my new Hapkido students huff and puff through their introductory class Wed night I would be tickled just to have Hapkido make it through THIS generation!! :-) Maybe I should look up one of the macho TKD types I have been reading about to come into my class and crack the whip a bit. What we need is more POWER! HHhhhmm. I think I'll go rustleup one of those Tim Allen videos I have stuck away. However, I look forward to seeing GM Cyrus as I have been to several of his seminars at the Hapkido Academy in Downers Grove as well as GM DeAlba, who I have also had a pleasure of seeing at the Hapkido Academy......" OK, now I'm confused. Yes, I know--- it doesn't take much. Even so, can I get a definitive line-up on who will be in Downers Grove, Illinois and who won't? I could see making it to Downers Grove to workout with Michael DeAlba-- if he is going to be there. Is there a standing line-up for this event or is this sort of a work-in-progress? Last time I got excited about an event M Cyrus was putting together in Chicago I was looking forward to seeing M Timmerman and that fell apart without explanation. (BTW: am I to understand that Rudy may be participating in another up-coming event?). Inquiring minds would like to know. I don't mind posting events on my website but need to have the straight dope. The next President must be elected at the Congress of the ITF........" I know this is going to come as a bit of a shock to these folks, but somebody needs to tell someone that these organizations (despite their fancy names) are not now nor have they ever been, at heart, democratic institutions. I would also add that there are a wide range of democratic institutions around this world which may, or may not approximate how we do business in the good ol US of A. I would have guessed that either of the gentlemen who penned these posts would have had enough time in the dochang to realize that these "international", "world" and "universal" organizations are, at heart, clubs where the "in-group" tells the rest of the membership how things are going to be. Why on earth do you think there is so much schism and competition in and among these groups? Get a clue: nobody votes on the students testing for rank, do they? This could also go a long way towards explaining the Olympic Committees' retiscence to adopt TKD as an official sport (as there is apparently nothing "official" about it). Where logic prevails people of accomplishment and rank and competence would prevail, but the fact is that this is not a logic-guided process and regardless of how much you want to wave around some constitution, the document is only as good as peoples' respect for it. The same goes for the TKD Oath and the HwaRang O-gae. Amazing how such documents just become fancy words we say when things are being said and the "succssion" really hits the "hierarchy".
