In sparring you would use a more mobile stance, but in forms we are taught to make every stance deep and strong. TKD is known for its kicking, so if you aren't doing side kicks there is something wrong. There are also many types of hand techniques you should be practicing from your forms, and many more to come in the more advanced forms. Taekwondo History DISCIPLINE'S ORIGIN Taekwondo is a traditional Korean martial art, which means "the way of kicking and striking." In taekwondo, the hands and feet are used to overcome an opponent, but the trademark of the sport is its combination of kick movements. Its origins are not well known but three possibilities are often described. One traces taekwondo to Korea's three-kingdom era (ca. 50 BC) when Silla Dynasty warriors, the Hwarang, began to develop a martial art, tae kyon ("foot-hand"). Others feel that taekwondo began as a form of Chinese boxing, which was established at the Shaolin Temple in 520 BC by Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. A third possibility is that taekwondo developed from Japanese or Okinawan karate. It is now felt that taekwondo probably developed from other Asian martial arts combined with traditional Korean techniques of kickboxing. Various Korean forms of martial arts have existed but in the early 20th century, taekwondo became the dominant form. In 1955, a group of Korean martial arts leaders chose taekwondo as the definitive Korean martial art in an attempt to promote its development internationally. In 1973, the Korean government recognised the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) as the legitimate governing body of the sport, and the first World Championships were held in that year. OLYMPIC HISTORY Taekwondo was featured on the programme of the 1988 and 1992 Olympics as a demonstration sport. At the 103rd IOC Session, held in Paris in 1994, taekwondo became an official medal sport beginning with the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. During those Games, 103 athletes - 55 men and 48 women - from 51 countries took part in the taekwondo competition. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 08:45:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Charles Veuleman To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] My Scary Tournament Schedule Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Ray, or anyone,.... Recently one of our assoc. BBs died unexpectedly at the age of 40. I had never trained with him, and had only spoken with him a few times at social events. He had gone off on other MA paths and hadn't been active in our assoc. for several years. I was leaning toward not going to the funeral since I didn't know the deceased well. The next day my instructor, who was on vacation at the time, called to get details and directions for the service, planning to drive back the 5+ hours one way to attend the funeral and immediately drive back. His example of dedication made me decide the least I could do was to show up since it was local for me. Grandmaster and most of our higher-ranked BBs were also there. My instructor has taught us that when an event happens in the life of a fellow BB, we are to be there; we are family. But he doesn't just say it; he lives it. He has attended several funerals for his BB's family members in the last few years, even though I know it was inconvenient for him. He interrupted another vacation to travel out-of-state to attend the wedding of one of his BBs. On a day-to-day basis, he counsels us and shows an interest in our lives outside the studio, never prying, but being available to us. He is carrying on the tradition of our Grandmaster that our Way is "family style." I have seen in him (and in Grandmaster) a willingness to put in the hard work of helping us reach our potential, not only as MAs, but as people. The more I see and hear in the MA world, the more I realize how rare that kind of commitment to one's students is. What better demonstration than living what you're teaching? I would be happy to connect you with one when you arrive. Unfortunately, most of them don't advertise themselves as HKD schools because HKD lacks the recognition of TKD or Karate or even Jujitsu. By strange contrast - their are a number of very high profile Akido schools in town. Which program would suit you best depends upon where you will be living in the county and where you will be working. San Diego is a big county with drive time under normal conditions of an hour and a half from north to south. GM Mo Young Kang runs a program in Encinitas, CA (a SD suburb) - excellent program, field tested techniques (the majority of his students are DEA and FBI - each year the DEA contracts with him to travel and provide training programs to field agents in South America) - awesome technician. In south bay Tiger Hong runs a somewhat retricted access program - very well respected. In Mira Mesa I can introduce you to an excellent TKD school whose Friday night teacher (Bo Hwa Jeong) is also an 8th Dan in Hapkido. He is a very exacting instructor, but is also very picky as to private HKD students. His general perspective is that BB in TKD prepares one to study Hapkido. I have been training with him most recently at his El Cajon school, but on Friday nights he teaches at his brother's Mira Mesa school. Send me an email directly when you get to town and I will introduce you around. Joel S.
