Anybody else had similar experiences? If you have, I would be indebted to know how you handled it. Thx, Jeff <<<<<<<< Jeff, I currently teach at least 5 pentecostals in my program, and they have no problem wearing pants, they understand high sidekicks and dresses don't go well together, and I thought they were hard core into their religion, but it seems you have a stronger breed at your place. I would offer to help them as much as you can. sure, you could charge like 80 bucks for some hakama, or you could give them to them for the wholesale price, plus maybe 10% to cover your shipping charges. You will find that this will help ease the situation and build some strong loyalty with these individuals. I don't know how big your school is, but I know in mine, that history has proven when I get a few family members in, if I treat them right, they are a CONSTANT cash cow for me, bringing more family members, more orders for gear, more tournament competitors, more more more more.... You just have to weigh those options. If they are a hassle however, and you are not hurting for the students, offer them a little discount, see if they take it, and hire me to teach at your empire. :D Yours in the martial arts, Charlie Veuleman ===== ------------------------------------- L. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Joel: In our Houston dojang, we taught taekwondo to children and hapkido to the adults. But when I opened this dojang, I noticed that there were no hapkido only dojang here and that all the taekwondo dojang I visited that also did hapkido, did not have a solid foundation on hapkido basic motion. So we advertise that we are the only hapkido only dojang in this whole area of three states and the city of Cincinnati. I continue to get calls asking if we really are a hapkido dojang or a taekwondo dojang that also does hapkido. They appear to have had the same experience I did. Though I can't say that this is conclusive as I did not visit every dojang that advertised that way. Just the full time ones I could find. <> Classes are 1 hour long for the children and 1 1/2 for the adults in the evening and 1 hour for the adults in the mornings in addition to 2 hour open classes on Saturdays. Classes are run in the method that I was taught just as it would be for any other martial art instructor for any other art. It does not matter if I have 10 students or 100, just as it did not back in the days when I also taught taekwondo. I would be happy to send you a copy of our curriculum by private email request, but the categories of technique can be found on my website at the bottom of the page called an introduction to hapkido or click on http://www.geocities.com/hapkiyukwonsul/an_introduction.htm. Rank testing is based on demonstration of skill after the time pre-requisite is met. Just as it usually is in any other martial art. Jere R. Hilland www.geocities.com/hapkiyukwonsul BTW. There are many full and part time hapkido only instructors on this list just as there are taekwondo and others (re: those from LA, It is September)... :) --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "michael tomlinson" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 05 Sep 2002 21:52:07 +0000 Subject: [The_Dojang] Jeb and Martial Arts Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I love Martial Arts and I can't stand Jeb as our Gov. of the state of Florida! I will vote yes for MA's this year and a big no for Jeb come election day, he has hurt this state more than helped it since he has been in charge, the problem is that he thinks he is the potentate instead of an elected official, time to give a big flush in Tallahasee. Hello Dakin: As I read more about the original post, I realized what your question was about. I am also curious where the info came from. If there is no link there, the reason might be that I have demonstrated KSB while in Korea. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi Brian, I must tell you what Grandmaster J.H. Park says about ki. "No can have hapkido without ki..." I've only been training in hapkido for about 5 years, and I feel as though I've only begun to scratch the surface of ki understanding and control. As far as my own training has gone, breathing techniques and a little meditation have been all I have been introduced to, other than basic ki concepts (use ki to develop power, focus, etc.) but I must say that what little I have been taught and have found out through my own researches, has been beneficial and I suspect that more ki training will come as I progress through the gup ranks. I'm 3rd right now, and hope to be prepared to advance soon, so hopefully I'll find out soon. Just as an "attaboy" I would say you're looking in the right direction for advancing your knowledge at whatever level you are presently at, in looking for answers to you question. I would mostly agree with Mark Lasich and Michael Tomlinson in their reviews of S. Shaw's book; however I would say that The Ki Process got me fired up to look for more real answers. I think you'll find ki training to be highly beneficial to you as well. The Encyclopedia of Din Mak has a lot of raw information about pressure point striking and a little about using pressure points for healing, but little on developing control of ki. I bring this book up because I'm interested in what some of the list members know about the authors and their opinions of the book. I would also say that if you can get your hands on a book before you but it, just give it a good look you'll be able to tell, generally, if it is what you are looking for. I hope this ramble helped a little.... I used to study Tae Kwon Do about 3 years ago, with the GTI (affiliated to the ITF) and I got to blue tag, but moved house (to the west midlands), so I had to give up... I'm now looking at Kuk Sool Won, as it seems to be a complete MA with weapons and all. The only problem being is that the class is 18 miles away, but it should be worth it :-) All the best. But, just as you can't really obtain rank from a video tape (you may buy the paper) or a book, you really need to learn about ki from a teacher in person. I have a small library, but it is still something, like proper technique, that you need to learn in person. Imagine the poor fellow that never attended a class EVER, and then obtained a black belt through a video testing/training program. This poor fellow then goes to a real dojang representing that art. He would be more than embarrassed long before class ended.... The same is true about ki. Just my opinion.... Jere R.
