Does studying Akido and TKD provide any particular challenges. What I mean by that is do you find the basic motions from TKD trying to sneak in while you are training in Akido and vice versa. I would like to begin cross training in Hapkido in about year or so but there are no Hapkido Dojangs around. There are several Akido schools so I may end up studying that. Any way I would be interested in what challenges you faced studying Akido when you already had some TKD experience. In the meantime I will be focusing on my TKD and my new friend KI. Living in Florida, we have enough problem with people figuring out how to vote without name-calling and other things, especially when most of the people on this list neither live in Florida nor care about the people running. I am refraining from taking potshots at the Candidates on the other side of the aisle in this message, but I will say I do not agree with your view. Though M Wests' Internationales are advertised as "Hapkido Seminars'" there are more than a few folks from TKD/TSD who make a showing on a regular basis. I understand that your get-together will target TKD folks but I wonder if you would be willing to reciprocate and make room for the odd Hapkido person who could use some polish on his punch/kick? Thoughts? I was particularly surprised to hear about the connection with SOUTHERN Praying Mantis. I had always assumed that it was Northern Praying Mantis. Thats what I get for assuming, yes? BTW, Dakin I will check out that website for further information. You always do a good job with your resources. Of course, you know that Carsten might not agree with the chronology as presented, but somehow I get the feeling that a lot of very quick and very personal decisions were made in rapid succession between 1957 and 1963 and as you said, Rudy, it may never be completely known or understood how and why things came together and came apart as they did. Thanks again. On an unrelated subject, there was a discussion about the various hyung practiced by TKD people and the kata NAIFANCHI came up. I don't remember what the TKD folks call it but it has always been a fun game to speculate on the origins of this kata through the Okinawan traditions. I mention this because while I was out in New Jersey a while ago I had an opportunity to peruse some Kung-Fu magazines and remember seeing a Chinese Form whose opening moves were VERY reminiscent of the NAIFANCHI kata. Since I wasn't able to pick-up on the magazine at the time nor do I recall the name of the publication I was just wondering if anyone happened to see the same article and might be able to recall what issue it was in. Thanks in advance for a shot in the dark. Was just going thru some old files and came across several old newsletters from the World Fighting Hapkido Association (sic) dating back to 1994 and 1995. Aside from the typical "we're not only best, the rest of them suck big time" statements peppered throughout the newsletters is something of real interest... names. Seems like several of those highly involved in the WFHA (sic) and listed with titles of Mister are now highly involved with another Florida Korean MA group. But now they sport the much sexier title of Grandmaster. Ummm... Hope no one minds... I have been reading and learning alot about ki or chi on my own over the years, and would recommend any books by B.K. Frantzis (Randall Sexton included them on his list). IMHO, B.K. Frantzis is simply wonderful! Visit www.energyarts.com to check out his website. For anyone in the NYC area who is interested, B.K. Frantzis will be giving a seminar on Taoist Meditation at the NY Open Center in October. I'm learning a lot by reading everyone's posts. Thanks for all your insights and for a great place to post and gather info. Though filming during during World War II, Kurosawa avoided patriotic and propagandistic elements to create a judo saga as visually stunning as it is exciting. This story of a talented yet headstrong judo student chronicles the struggle to establish judo, rather than jujitsu, as Japan's premiere martial art. Wartime censors ordered many cuts, but could not destroy the power of Kurosawa's vision. With its strong emphasis on discipline, Sanshiro Sugata anticipages later Kurosawa masterpieces that focus on the difficult path to spiritual enlightenment. The violent yet beautiful showdown, shot on a windswept mountainside, set the standard for all Japanese action films to follow. Directed and written by Akira Kurosawa, from the novel by Tsuneo Tomita. In Japanese with English subtitles. 1943, B&W, 79 minutes My copy?
