I am sure some of you guys have gone through the same thing, how big of a loan did you take out( i am thinking about 100,000-150,000), how did you find a co-signer, what obstacles slowed you down, etc? Water, Earth, and Wind (air) comprise three of the four elements of nature, so I figure Fire would also be represented....If so, can you share how that breathing technique is performed? Thanks. In the spirit, Mark --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 09:18:16 -0400 From: Divetony@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Sparring Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I have returned to studying TKD after a 17 year absence. In my younger days studying under GM Y.H.Park, we focused on sparring techniques as this was about the time that TKD was an Olympic demonstration sport and he was a coach of the team. I went to a State tournament, it was a good experience, one I still remember well, coming in second. Now I am older (42), and began my study again a year ago, I'm now a high blue belt and participate in the Black Belt Club at our Dojang. This has spurred many questions to myself. We are training to be black belts, for the kids and the younger people in class this is a big thing as it should be. For me it will be an accomplishment but not the end of the world if it doesn't happen. There is a lot of emphasis on sparring at the school lately and although I don't hate it, sometimes I just feel there is so much more to TKD.I plan on training to get to my black belt this time, I should have stayed with it years ago but life got in the way. I know the workouts are beneficial aerobically but the knee and back aches I get sometimes are getting more frequent. Any suggestions on my next martial art, one that would involved less jumps, high kicks, etc? Since I'm starting to get very introspective with this perhaps one with a spiritual side would also be a path for me. Any suggestions? --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "earthlink" To: Date: Tue, 10 Sep 2002 09:00:37 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Thanks for the help! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Thanks to Dena M and Mr. Cyrus especially Mr. Sexton for help with bruxism....I will certainly try these approaches at getting to the root of the problem. Unfortunately, she doesn't feel she has a problem as bad as I think she must, she can't hear her grinding while she is asleep, and she has been doing it for most of her life. I think she can get past it though with a little patience with me....Thanks again to all. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Just my two cents worth... About one year ago I had surgery to replace my ACL, I don't think that this constitutes having "bad" knees, but I have been working very hard to rcover and am mostly there. Well one of the exercises that has helped me alot has been step-ups. If your student will put a cinder block or something similar outside the door of her bathroom, and then everytime she comes out from there does 10 step-ups on each leg, this may help strengthen the muscles that support the knee. Strong quads seems to be the key for me....Along the same note, I have a young female student that has a tendency to be sort of knock-kneed and her feet are pronated(?). This seems the worst when she is practicing something sort of fast, or sparring, and sometimes seems like she could easily hurt herself. I've been trying to strengthen her some by standing in horse-back stance and a few other things. If I could piggy-back this question onto Bill M's question, I would like to know something extra to help strengthen her legs and keep her free from injury. You could possibly sell them a top and the hakama rather than a uniform and the hakama. I sometimes break sets as well and am usually able to sell the individual pieces within 6 months or so. This option might save them say 30 to 40 percent over the full uniform cost. I believe it has also already been suggested that you sell to them at wholesale. However, this might create problems for you with other students wanting the same deal. Kurosawa was also a real stickler for details, and his movies are supposed to be the most historically accurate with regard to set, props and costumes of any movies made to date. He is a truly great filmmaker.
