Be assured that I am taking all of your advice into consideration, and I have the full support of my OB/GYN, classmates, and instructors to keep training as long as I possibly can. I'm even going to take a promotion test next October 11 (no sparring, of course)! I'll let you know from time to time my questions concerning my pregnancy and TKD... but in the meantime, please receive my grateful thanks for your comments and congratulations. I find it very disturbing when your partner goes flying through the air, or collapses in a heap before the technique is even set in." Now this is one of my pet hates, people who are overly cooperative are just wasting their time and yours. They can waste their own time but wasting mine is stealing my life and I don't like that at all. I was at a Kaze Arashi Ryu Aiki Ju Jutsu seminar some years again and for my sins I was partnered with someone who flew through the air every time I attempted to practise a projection...he learned nothing except that he could breakfall and I wound up believing that I had godlike Ki powers (tm, video/DVD available). Fortunately I was stuck with this jerk for only that one technique, but it really left a nasty taste in my mouth that I had no real opportunity for learning it, c'est la vie. OK, I'm asking Craig, I've never seen this done and it would freak out my training partner if I could that, so lay out the trick please I want to see the look on his face. Maybe it's because I live in Scotland, but I've never had any problems with people claiming mystical powers that can protect them from harm, so it could be time for us to have someone and I like the sound of the cash register filling. I believe that would be a completely new subject to discuss ;-) I am absolutely sure that there was a huge write-up in Taekwondo Times, in fact that was mentioned by others in the group. Following the ki test - yes, I could touch it, yes it really exists. I actually have limited exposure to Combat Hapkido. It is taught as a secondary art at a local school. In MY case, it is taught by humans (not postcard, video tape or telepathy). AND I find the techniques to be great. My primary art is TKD and I have had some Goju Ryu Karate. The techniques themselves are at least on-par with what I have learned through those arts. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Chris: ".....I also think if you are overly compliant your doing yourself, and your partner a disservice. I make it a habit not to take a fall for anyone unless their technique is compelling enough to warrant the response. ...." I know we were talking about speed but I did want to acknowledge your bringing this other issue to the front. I think in some ways there is a kind of antagonistic relationship here. By this I mean that a partner who knows what technique is being done can, quite candidly, thwart that technique if they want to. This last weekend I attended a Kuk Sool Do seminar and was paired with a young man considerably larger than myself who had a real aversion to failing. I suppose I could have sped up my technique and "forced" him to comply but then that would have just confirmed to him the idea that "partners can't be trusted". Since he was pretty rigid anyhow, I am guessing there could have been an injury risk as well despite his 1st guep rank. It wasn't worth it. This is the reason I am glad that you brought up the issue of being overly-compliant. Just like that partner of mine resisted my technique, he could have just as well simply gone along passively and it would not have been any better for my experience. Teachers need to coach their students not to resist techniques "at all costs", but I think teachers also need to coach practitioners to comply only when they feel sufficient "persuasion" (read also "discomfort") to go along. I can see no reason to fall down for anyone other than 10th, 9th, or 8th gueps without some sense that ones' balance has been broken either mechanically or neurologically. When I am working out with anyone else I expect that I will feel some compunction from the technique. Without that I see no reason to just fall down. Thanks again. Thanks for your response, but now color me "confused". Am I to understand that the use of protective equiptment is not consistent throughout TKD/TSD play? You will recall that my original post sugggested that the chest protector was not sufficient protection for determined full-power kicks and punches. Am I to understand that there are WTF or ITF schools that train full-power, and/or compete full-power without any protection at all? Perhaps I misread something. I would like to know if losing more weight would help in my high kicks and speed. I am in the process of losing more weight. I started TKD 1 year ago and right now I am a yellow belt. I lost a lot of weight, and have a way to go. I noticed that I am having a hard time with high kicks. I try to do my kicks very high when requested but most of the time if I do a spinning kick I end up falling down. It is hard to keep balance also. Speed-When sparring I notice that the smaller students are faster when it comes to response. What I mean is that I can strike and block my opponent but it seems they come back faster than I do. Is this because I need to lose more weight and get into better condition? I take vitamins, exercise twice a week and train at the Dojo three times per week. I would like to become a faster, more focused martial artist without a lot of injuries. As far as my stamina, it is pretty good. I pace myself and try to use the proper breathing techniques that I am taught. What else can I do to be faster and have more precise high kicks? Thanks Landa TKD 7thYellow Belt <> Exit Deep Lurk Mode.... Dear Landa, Loosing more weight will help in your high kicks if, when stretching you find that your one big ab gets in the way before you reach the limit of flexability for that leg (trust me I kinow from experience). When you are lighter, to a certain extent you are "faster." Howeveer, sparring speed is made up of three components IMHO 1. Recognition time 2. Processing time 3. Execution time Part 1 (recognition time) can be reduced with drills/experience Part 2 (processing time) can be reduced by creating drills that practice a response to a type of techniques (many schools use one steps sparring). Part 3 (execution time) is largely a product of fast twitch muscle and natural ability, but can be reduced by developing the muscle memory to execute a given technique with exacting form (economy of motion). As to spin kicks try them at knee level with perfect form, balance and timing, and then work up to higher levels as your balance and flexability increases. FWIW you will also have to retrain your balance/mind to the state of spinning being normal....I actualy teach my students to just spin, before we do spin kicks. At 7th gup, you might be a little early in your martial arts career to find spinning as a natural thing....I start that concept at 6th Gup in my school with Spin Back Kick....Spin Kicks in general are covered at 3rd Gup (Brown) Train with Jung Do in your heart THe rest is commentary, Charles Richards www.geocities.com/mojakwan Good Luck in your training __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Anthony: Thanks for the response. And you are right on the money. Many of those phrases you identified were taken from your history which provides the foundation for the notes I have accrued regarding Haidong Kumdo. I hope you take this as a compliment. You are probably one of the best, if not THE best source for this sort of information. As far as my questions, I think my original goal was to organize some sort of time line much like the one on your website, but slightly expanded to show how the various players relate to each other. There are plenty of names, dates and titles thrown around regarding Kumdo, but very little help in sorting it all out to put some order to it. I had occasion to contact the World Kumdo people in Benttendorf, Iowa, for instance, and the gentleman I spoke with there pretty much pegged the "defensive meter". I think I was also concerned with using way too much bandwidth. Like you, I can get going on Kumdo (or Hapkido for that matter) and not know when to quit. Having said all of that, let me start off with just a few questions. 1) Can you relate the following names and put them in some sort of order? a) Seung-San Dae Sun-Sa practiced what art or discipline? Whom did he teach his material to? a) ??? How is the individual above connected to the individuals below? c.) Jang, Paek-san - began teaching ________(?) to Kim, Jeong-ho in 1962. d.) Kim, Jeong-ho-President of DaeHan Haidong Kumdo and originator of the Haidong Kumdo organization e.) Kim, Jeong Sung - Split from DaeHan Haidong Kumdo to develop his own haidong Kumdo organization ("World Haidong Kumdo"?) This is the person you wrote about in your post "Proliferation of Sword Arts in America" 10-31-01. f.) Na, Han Il - Current president of Hankuk Haedong Kumdo. Is this a separate organization from the two entities listed above? g.) Kang, Yeong Wook- executive director and vice-president of Hankuk HaeDong Kumdo. 1) I saw a write up on "Gicheon" which seems to have been organized by an individual out of Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung and some martial art techniques. Is this the art that relates to Haidong Kumdo? Can you fill-out the connection a bit? 2) Shimgumdo is practiced in the US. There is an organization that advertises regularly in TKD TIMES magazine. I called them and was advised that the person who leads the organization in this country is the student of an individual who organized Shinkumdo following an "inspirational dream". Can you tell us anything more about this art and its relationship to Haidong Kumdo? 3) Kim, Jae Il formulated CHOSUN SEBUP as an amalgam of Tai Chi, Kumdo and Chi-kung. (BTW: I have his book on order from Korea). Does he relate in any way to any of the folks I have mentioned above? 4) Finally there are 6 people associated with the origination of the Korean Kumdo Assn. which essentially is "Korean kendo" and is related to the IKF. The TAE HAN KUM SA Association, predecessor to the Korean Kumdo Association was not organized until May 20, 1948. At that time, Masters 5) Suh, Ching Hac, 6) Kim, Yong Dal, 7) Ho, Ik Yong 8) Chung, Tae Min 9) Lee, Chung Ku 10) Do, Ho Mun worked together to organize all Kumdo practitioners under one group. Five years later, in 1953, the Korean Kumdo Association was founded. GM Suh, Ching Hac is the current president and originator of the World Kumdo Assn here in the US at that place in Bettendorf I mentioned earlier. Can you provide any information on any of the other individuals in this list. I understand that GM Lee, Ching Ku may be the current president of the KKA. Sorry if this list is a bit daunting. I have lots more where these came from but this would be a good start. Thanks Anthony.
