How common is the practice of striking a brick or a piece of wood with the different striking surfaces of the hand in order to harden them? Is this something that people really do? Does it really work? I have started doing it and in a few short weeks I believe I feel a difference. I also imagine that there are some dangers. I have heard it suggested that it causes arthritis. Is this true? Is this really a good idea? Is this a good idea for someone who's occupation was say, musician? My thinking was that I would try it and if it made my fingers less agile I would stop. What do you think? When I first opened the page, I noticed the photograph of Mr. Pellegrini with Dr. Kimm, and immediately called the good Dr. to tell him how much I enjoyed seeing his picture in print for posterity. His comment was that he had been approached at a Chuck Norris benefit in Chicago some years back by Mr. P, who asked if Dr. Kimm had time for a picture. Dr. Kimm, ever the consummate gentleman, obliged the request, and stated he has never seen or met Mr. P before that occasion or since. I find it odd that the picture was displayed so prominently in the article, and it would make one wonder exactly what the circumstances surrounding the other pictures might be......J. R. Remember to update your subject line when you reply to an issue of the digest. i.e. a post with the subject line "Re: The_Dojang digest, Vol 9 #462 - 15 msgs" will always be rejected. I should think that would be "intuitively obvious to the most casual observer", but I guess that is not always the case. To me they simply say kick me > right here extra hard. > Bear with me as I tell a family story. My son was 11 when he returned to TKD training after having earned his 1st Dan in Shotokan Karate and competing in Karate and Open tournaments for about 4 years. He and his father had both made joking comments about people who wear hogu and the comments usually included the word "wussie". After about three months of catch-up training, my son was invited to join the school's Olympic-style sparring class. The first kick he took (wearing a hogu) removed the wind from his sails and caused him to shake his head. The second kick put him on the floor with an 8-count. He never made another joking comment about the hogu. Father was another story. He didn't spar, just coached our son and assisted him in his training classes. During the next three years, he would "prove" that the hogu was for people who couldn't "take it" by standing for roundhouse kicks from our son with no apparent pain or damage. Then, when Josh was 14 and fin weight (the lightest), they danced their dance again. Josh kicked his father, who got a very odd look on his face, said very little, and sat down. Later that night, he showed me the bruise (very large and black) caused by the kick. He has never again stood for a kick from our son without a hogu because he now knows that if it doesn't hurt without a hogu either the person kicking is too light to do any damage to the kickee or the person kicking does not know how to kick properly or does not want to kick with full power. I suspect that anyone who thinks a hogu is an invitation to "kick here" has never been in a black belt sparring match which mattered to the competitors.
