I has been in a many a fights and fought against some of the toughest fighters around some of which are considered legends. I and those that have trained me have fought combined well over 30 years against even Olympic style fighters. We all agree that the hogu is rather inviting and is basically a target to be used as such. It might be that your son and husband just were not fighting people who were performing kicks with the greatest technique. Because lord knows that once a person truly learns to pivot and thrust there weight forward the can increase the force of a kick or punch by 7. Another thing is that in order to truly take a hard blow to the body one has to condition their body to be able to endure such blows. This means more than just sit-ups, crunches, and six inches off the deck leg lifts. None the less Sally I am glad to see your loved ones are now somewhere they are truly challenged and enjoying learning the art. What types of training do persons on the list use to condition there bodies (the thoracic region) for taking hard blows? Michelle L. How common is the practice of striking a brick or a piece of wood with the different striking surfaces of the hand in order to harden them? It is a common practice to those who think bricks are our enemy. I also imagine that there are some dangers. I have heard it suggested that it causes arthritis. Is this true? Jeremy Callner>>>> Every cell in your body that you damage will hold you accountable in your later years. The best way to break a brick is with a sledge hammer..at least that is the new, improved, updated, modernized form of brick-pounding. Is Hapkido an Art? Is Hapkido a Science? Hapkido is both. Hapkido has a scientific basis for its movements, techniques, and stances. Additionally, Hapkido is artistic in its approach each individual has it own unique expression of style and movement. Each instructor has its own philosophy of being. From breathing exercises, ki development focus breathing, to constant repetition. To a study of moral ethics in defense as well as the legal defense of using Hapkido. Hapkido is all that and more. Hapkido is a personal expression. Like religion, like literature, like painting, even programming. Each will do it a bit differently.
