I came to TKD because I passed a local school, met the (young!) instructor, and was very attracted to the way he teaches. Although the great majority of the students are children (and I'm definitely not), I guess I'm comfortable enough to jump in and not feel like I would be the odd woman out. I came to TKD after a five year break from martial arts. To step back, I started in Karate back in 1979, continuing for three years (low brown belt rank), but stopped when I became pregnant with my first child. The school was not known for their students having sufficient control, and in hindsight, my decision was good. I restarted at the same school in 1994, with both my daughters, one of whom stuck with it to 3rd kyu brown. My (same) sensei restarted me as a white belt, but at the first test moved me directly to green. At the test, I had my ribs caved in by a massive guy testing for brown. No further comment, but it validated my earlier decision to leave. I hung in for three years (totalling six years of study), achieving first kyu brown belt, but found myself DREADING coming to class. There was no rhyme or reason to what would be taught; Sensei had developed a very big head; and administratively things were not good - parents were rebelling. Tests were not given at set times, nor was there a set curriculum to achieve the next rank (what a wake up call at my new school!). But you could pretty much bet when a test would be -- college tuition would be due, or school taxes, or some such personal expense for the sensei. Testing for rank was arbitrary, and if you trained with his black belts, from his viewpoint, you might as well not have trained at all, 'cause he didn't see you. Five years later, my body was giving me messages that I had better get off my computer chair tusch and start doing something physical again. I thought about local health clubs (even going so far as to check one out), Curves (for women), but nothing either met my schedule (I work days, duh), or turned me on. I started calling MA schools, and stopped by this relatively new one that had opened about a mile away. Loved what I saw, was impressed by set curriculum for rank, milestone stripes in between, character building (sure as heck didn't exist in my old school!), and the general way the school, small though it is, is run. Now, sorry for the length, but to the point... My instructor offered to let me start as a green belt because of my relatively high karate rank. I turned him down. We compromised... he would move me up without testing as I learned the lower belt curriculum, until I achieved green belt, then I would test with the rest of the class. Yes, as you've probably guessed if you're still reading, I moved very quickly, picked up the appropriate sparring and poomse, and am now a 5th gup blue belt. But I not only know all the lower belt stuff, I also assist the instructor. I'm hoping to get my black belt from this school, one I can be proud of, am part of MasterQuest, and I love working with the kids and few other adults in the school. We're a team, a family, most everyone working together, and even though we're growing quite rapidly, I'm hoping I can help to keep that same positive, family atmosphere. My hardest thing - trying to remember NOT to throw punches to the face when non-contact sparring! I agree with the concern that some people may get discouraged that they can't progress as quickly or execute some techniques as cleanly as I could wearing my (third) white belt, but the only one who complained was one young kid who maybe someday will learn that MA is not about external rank, but about internal growth. I'm patient with this, explaining that I trained for six years before coming here. Most of the time, it's admiring parents, but I don't want them to have unrealistic expectations for their kids, either. I'm having a good time, I think the school is fair, I think that everyone without a TKD rank should start at white, but that won't happen, and I'm pleased that I can assist with all the lower rank techniques, instead of being an inept green belt at the beginning who would not have known any of the TKD curriculum. I'd recommend white belt, with special considerations given to those who have trained previously. -- Sheree Goldstein --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Wed, 2 Oct 2002 10:42:02 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen P To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] TKD movie star...? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Last night a British woman called the TKD studio where I am a student and had an interesting request. A film director sent her to DC for a month to search for a man he saw on the DC Metro 2 years ago (he was a tall, over 6ft tall, black man with a scar on the side of his face wearing a jacket with a TKD patch on it - she described it as a patch with a fist - maybe a ChunDoKwan patch? and he got off on one of the Virginia side stops - either Springfield or Van Dorn St) Anyway, apparently this film director went back to the UK and wrote a movie with this guy in mind and he now wants this guy to be the 'star' of this movie. Thought I'd pass it along in case he's around and has film aspirations... __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Just wanted to say thank you to all those that made the second annual Moja Kwan Moo Do camp in Canton Georgia such a pleasure to attend. Master Hodder from the Yeti inhabited mountains of Colorado gave us all an opportunity to learn how to defoliate trees with escrima sticks as well as taught us a number of sparing techniques. Hopefully this new found knowledge will keep me from getting kicked in the head too many times before i finally reach retirement age. Master Terry shared with us a great session on reactive knife defenses. His arrival all the way from San Jose California to teach at the seminar was a real pleasure for all who were there. Peg and I hope the next time he is in Atlanta he will choose to stay with us at our "Animal House" again. Master Richards gave us all the opportunity to beat up on him a bit in his sparing session. This was after sharing his concepts and ideas as they relate to his many years of experience in the martial arts across several different styles. Of course after having traded punches with Charles over the last eight years it is a wonder that I can still function as something other than an old punch drunk martial artist. I always find it amazing that the older I get, the more I realize what I don't know. Looking forward to more sessions like this one in the future with Master Richards and the other members of the USKMAF. Some are at boring places, some are not. This weekend we are doing one at a car and bike show. Mac and Jack, yes, I am going to show the Harley (i.e.: a real motorcycle). Jack, the pictures are being developed. Jere R. Dr. Kimm is still busy trying to finish his latest book(s)....." I think what I was hoping for was someone who could update me on what is happening with the organization, and what activities are coming in the next year or so. Quite some time back I had a membership in the organization but never did much with it. About a year ago I contacted Dr. Kimm to ask if my membership was still active and he gave me the name of individual to contact. I sent a letter but never got an answer. Dr. Kimm is quite a guy, so I would be very intersted to know whats cooking with his organization. Mostly different ITF styled groups (we do mainly WTF), but also some Kyokushin Karate people. The general rule is that I recognize all TKD ranks. So, when I have say ITF green belt joining my school, s/he is a green belt in my club. As for other arts (Karate), I do allow them to wear their rank as long as they also wear the training suit from the given art. If they decide to change into our dobok they also change belts. But they can also progress much faster through the ranks, depending on their previous experience. To be honest, I don`t have too much of a problem with ranks. A person coming from outside quickly finds where to "fit in" in our group. We never had any problems with people coming from other schools to train with us. The nicest moment was when I had two Kyokushin brothers visiting us. They have been doing Kyokushin for quite a while. One of them was 6th Kyu and the other 4th Kyu. They came to train with the beginners class, but I quickly noticed their skills and invited them to the competition group. They came to some classes, even do some sparring, and then they officially joined but they simply came to class wearing white belts. I was especially impressed since one of them is 18 and the other only 12, and coloured belts mean much more to young people that to us seniors... They took part in our two-weeks intensive training camp in the summer and they were promoted from white belts to 7th Kup based on their dedication and experience. And of course they did a great test...
