We can all aruge until we are blue in the face on topics but most often when I discuss things with people, Such as Master J.R. West, Master Alain Burrese. I may get into debates and it may sometimes be that we must agree to disagree. I may even have heated dicussions in Private e-mail, but they always know who they are talking to. Recently I was threatened via e-mail with physical violence. Because the e-mail mentioned aspects that I have posted on this list (actually this is the ONLY martial arts list I belong to) I have to assume the individual got my e-mail from here. Such behavior I thought would be beneath the members in the martial arts community and those on this list. However, the individual used an anon. mail address system and has made identification difficult. I hope that these attacks will cease and never show themselves again, especially since laws on this subject are getting stronger. Sorry for the rant, Peace to all! Dan friend that came up under GM Silak Henry Cho. i.e. in the days before step machines, squat racks, leg extension machines, etc, you did forms like Naihanchi to build up your legs. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net There are a couple of videos available, but HMD has evolved a bit since their production. As Master Kincade said in his previous post, Dr. Kimm keeps us on our toes. Although the basic structure of the sul have remained constant, we have been exposed to quite a bit of new (to myself at least) material in the last few years. HMD is definitely a living and evolving martial art. Some people may not be entirely comfortable with the inclusion of so much new material, but in my opinion the changes in curriculum have had a very positive overall effect on our training. I think in the past it may have been easy to draw a correlation between HMD, HKD and KSW. Now I think we are a bit more distinctive in our approach to sul, the execution of our hyung, and flowing nature of our "infinity" blocking and counter techniques. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 12:10:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Jye nigma To: The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Sulsa? You are completely correct. Sorry to everyone about any confusion in screwing up the numbers. As far as the SEISAN kata, OS Uechi was who I had in mind when I think of the light, fast kata. It was reportedly his favorite and the one that he used often to show his stuff at demo-s. Many of the pictures that are seen of Uechi doing kata show him doing this one rather than the other two in his system. I also give a hearty "amen" to using the Pyong Ahn or Pinan kata to teach the biomechanics found in KuShanku. I think we all seem to do better when things are broken into comfortable mouthfuls. Perhaps what I was trying to suggest is that maybe there would come a time when the "training wheels" come off and instead of performing 5 Pyong Ahn hyung we need only practice the single older KuShanku for the same benefit. Just a thought. Best Wishes, Bruce --__--__-- Message: 10 From: Bruce.Sims@med.va.gov To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 15:28:46 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: membership? I usually save such things in one place or another. I am sure it said "Han Mu Do" on it, but I have no rank in that style. It was good for a single years' membership. FWIW. I'm considering passing on the 6 foot staff, but the mechanics of joined hands techniques versus articulated (escrima) could add a dimension to students training, so I am considering keeping the 4' staff, which is also a good Ki Cho for the late Cane work.... " In THAT case, my friend, pick-up a copy of the latest Pacific Rim magazine offering. It has quite a layout on the Chinese classic "OUTLAWS OF THE MARSH". This is the same book that was translated by the famous author Pearl S Buck as "ALL MEN ARE BROTHERS" and is considered one of the primary sources that started the whole "kung-fu-came-from-Shaolin" legend. In that magazine issue you will find a treatment of "WU SONG BREAKS MANACLES". Wu Song was one of the heroes in the book and was taken under arrest and then attacked by his captors. He was forced to defend himself even though manacled. The form is a reflection of self-defense accomplished without the benfit of free hands. There is also a book of the complete routine available through Hai Feng Publishing (Hong Kong) and written by Cai Longyun (ISBN 962-238-030-1; 168 pgs; approx $15US). " Has anyone actually seen the Chinese cane form advertised in the recent Inside Kung-fu Issues? By this I am asking if anyone has actually had first hand experience with its execution to be able to comment on it? Just wondering. From what I understand it actually is a dedicated cane form rather than a stick form done with a cane and this intrigues me. Charles, my personal favourites are: - Coach Han Lee videos (in my opinion the best ones on the market) - TERC video series (The Science of Taekwondo Fighting) If you`re interested for Olympic sparring, this is where to start. As for books, I prefer GM Lee Kyong Myong`s "Taekwondo Kyorugi" - good foundation for WTF fighting. Hope this helps. Probably no surprise that the author shoots a hole in the whole 'farmers using farm tools because of a weapons ban' legend. But also mentioned in another article is the town of Sudbury, Ontario. Home to one of our list members (Hi Ron). The article is Robert M. Dalgleish: The Father of Canadian Goju-Ryu Karate. Turns out this (now deceased) gentleman had a dojo in Sudbury, way back when. Also in this issue is a review of the book by Stephen Fabian, Clearing Away the Clouds. One of the lessons that Fabian relates in his book is about a Korean Taekwondo instructor in central Illinois that we both shared. Small world...
