Rather than what art, make sure you pick a good instructor. A great instructor in X will be much better than a poor instructor in Y, no matter what the arts. Even if everyone says Y is a better art. You need to find the school, art, and instructor that best meets what you are training for. And you will be limited with what is in your area. This doesn't help much, but something for you to think about. There are a couple articles on my web page regarding the focuses of martial arts and choosing a school that may help. Check out the self-defense section under Marc MacYoung to find these at www.burrese.com Wishing you the best with the start of your journey. Let me know if I can help. I understand that many area instructors and students will be there, and we look forward to seeing all our old friends and meeting some new ones. Many of our DD brothers and sisters will be there as well, and they are always an interesting group. Hope to see all y'all (southern plural) there......J. R. Jack, if that doesn't help, let me know, but I think you would need to see what we do to discern the distinctive characteristics of our art. I'm a bit pressed for time, but I wanted to answer Ray's question, too. Dr. Kimm's seminar is Nov. 2 and 3, with a testing taking place Friday the 1st. It will be in Baton Rouge, LA at his headquarters' school. If you need info or directions, his headquarters' number is 225-924-2837. This year he will be focusing on weapons. The poster I have says that we will study Kum Sul (including three different forms) , Joong Bong Sul, Dan Bong Sul, Dan Jan Sul, Pho Bak Sul, Han Mu Do Self-Defense, Han Mu Do Hyung, and Ki Breathing and Mediation. I'm particular excited that I will be able to continue learning Cho Sun Se Bub Hyung, which we started learning from Kim, Jae Il in Korea last summer. Also, Chief Master Sergio Chavez, WTF International Referee, will be conducting Tae Kwon Do training. There is another special guest who will be there, schedule permitting. Chief Master Kim Tate is one of Dr. Kimm's most senior students. He is with the Secret Service and will be conducting a special session. I hope to see some of you there! Every self defense technique I did was not good enough for him even though in the Dojang my Grandmaster and his son says I am doing fine, just practice more. I was told that I should be a white belt if I could not perform basic self defense techniques. This made my confidence go down but I knew I had to finish my rank test. When it was time for me to do a skip side kick I was not mentally there. I kept thinking about what he had said. It took me 2x to finally break the board. I would like to know is this common for other masters to be so harsh on students who test? This master is part of the program but his Dojo is in California and he teachers totally different from my Grandmaster teachers here. Should I say something? Am I just being a baby? I am not looking for sympathy. Please, I am really concerned and serious. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: "Jason & Nicole Swanson" To: Date: Sat, 12 Oct 2002 17:45:47 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Insurance Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I'm looking for recommendations on who to use for insurance, both general liablility for day to day classes, etc. and also event coverage for a tournament. You're kind of stubborn at times, so I wish you all the luck world... in it healing at all. ;) BG: Cool, come on over! I hope Shawn can make it too. If you need directions or times, I have them on my webpage... http://lmaa.bravepages.com Hey, what ever happened with that link, brotha!? ;) How did your test go? Talk to you soon. That being said it is my understanding that the World Han Mu Do Fall Seminar will be the first weekend of November at the World Han Mu Do Headquarters in Baton Rouge, La. Master Kincade has told me and I believe he posted that this seminar will be focused more on weapons. However, I have not heard any more details and I believe Do Ju Nim is doing seminars in some other countries. As soon as I learn more I will try to post the information.
