He may not test again for a long while. I attend the dojang 3-5days per week. Two days out of those I usually take double classes. But, that is to keep in shape and maintain focus too. Usually 3 classes a week is sufficient for most dojang testing requirements Any other questions feel free to ask! I double graded from yellow to green belt so have only done one real coloured belt grading but i did that after 2 months ( I graded for my yellow belt on the 8/7 and my green belt on the 13/9 of this year) I dont think that there really is a set amount of time between gradings, it varies from pupil to pupil although my master seems to do gradings every 3 months or there abouts. As for the amount of time I train; twice a week. One session is an hour long, the other is usually an hour and a half, sometimes two hours. Hope this helps (but cant see it doing so!) But interrupt the storage process by learning another new skill and that first lesson may be erased, according to research into memory and the mind.... The researchers used a device that meaasures blood flow in the brain. They concluded it takes five to six hours for the memeory of a new skill to move from a temporary storage site in the front of the brain to a permanent storage site at the back.... "During those six hours", said Dr. Holcomb, "there is a neural 'window of vulnerability' when that new skill can be easily eroded from memory if the person attempts to learn a second new skill ... If you were performing a piano piece for the first time and then immediately started practicing something else, then that will cause problems in retention of the initial piece that you practiced. It would be better if the first practice session were followed by five to six hours of routine activity that required no new learning." "This is a new and important insight into the relationship between motor skill learning and neural activity. The brain is incredibly flexible", said Dr. Cave. "It may not be, for instance, that practicing the piano would interfere with what you learned just before from a tennis lesson. The two skills could use diffeent parts of the brain." --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Tue, 15 Oct 2002 14:10:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Linda Valdivia Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] TKD testing To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Wendy... thanks... it helps feed my curiosity, and that was the only basis of my question. As I mentioned, I am also a green belt (6th gup) as of the end of September. My Master holds testing approx. every 8 weeks, although I tested 4 weeks early for my green belt (I had just gotten purple in August). I usually train 5 times a week, roughly an hour per session, but Fridays and Saturdays are a little longer. I am just curious how things are done elsewhere, that's all. Thanks! And you're never too old to start TKD or any MA for that matter :o) >Anyway, I have a question for the TKD people on the >list. I am curious... how often do you test (at the >colored belt level)? Besides being based on >readiness, is anything else considered, such as >passage of time (# of months) or # of hours of >training? Also, on average, how many hours per week >do you train in the dojang? In my dojang, the testing is a little confusing at first. There is 12 gups, and 6 belt colors. We test for the next gup anywhere from 2 or 3 months. We test for belts anywhere from 4 to 6 months. There is a two-class minimum a week. I go 3 to 4 times a week, so I'm testing roughly every 2 months for "gup" testing, except this time. After I got my green belt, I took time off (vacation twice). So it took me 3 months to get my blue stripe. Plus we have to earn 4 "tips" (small stripes other than the big "gup" stripe, which is the color of the next belt). The tips are for forms, step sparring, combos .... depending on rank. I hope this isn't too confusing. It still confuses me at times. Anyway, in my TSD dojang, we tested every 3 months up to brown belt. Then it went to 4 months. Cho dan bo (black belt canadiate) was for 6 months. And there was a two class minimum a week, but no max of classes. Most of us went more than twice a week, so my master was forced to use the "month" thing, not the "class" thing hehehehe. I'm a martial arts junky, so I go more than twice a week. Twice a week is just a "tease" to me LOL. Anyways, I hope this helped. For lack of an instructor... I would suggest going by 'the book' (Hwang Kee's volume II). In HK's book, he doesn't do the crescent kicks. You may just want to try it both ways as well and see which you like best.
