In my TSD dojang, you had to wait 3 months to test till brown belt, 4 months till cho dan bo and six months for cho dan bo. But he also has testing every six weeks. The 6 week thing is to break up the amount of students testing. In this dojang, we have 200+ students, so that would be kinda "scwished" if everyone tested at once .... eeekkkk LOL. I think the job and the 3 small children are the major contributors to my tiring. I have lost about 15 lbs. since starting and can see physically that I've trimmed down and eat less. I eat junk food rarely and stay away from fried foods, I try to eat fruits and vegetables often but being of Italian ancestory eating is a way of life. Do you or anyone have any other diet suggestions, at this point to maintain weight not necessarily lose it. I'm 5'10" and weigh 225 lbs, most of my muscle weight is upper body in the chest and shoulders. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Landalee34Lee42@aol.com Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2002 10:09:24 EDT To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Re: Hard Testing Master Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Thank you everyone for your response regarding my testing experience. The security situation on the peninsula is suddenly turning precarious, putting the recent positive developments on the back burner. A crisis similar to the one prior to the October 1994 Agreed Framework may not be excluded. Worse still, it is doubtful that Kim, with only four months left in office, will be able to persuade the Bush administration to pursue the resolution of the latest challenge through dialogue, nor does it seem likely that Washington will change its hard-line approach toward one of three countries it accused of forming an axis of evil. Fine differences have already emerged in the stances of Seoul and Washington. According to senior officials of the Kim administration, President Kim took Pyongyangs nuclear weapons program as a ``grave issue, considering that any attempt by Pyongyang to develop nuclear weapons may not be tolerated. Yim Sung-joon, Kims national security advisor, told a morning briefing, ``This issue should be resolved peacefully through dialogue. However, a senior government official interpreted the U.S. position as being resolute, not accepting any quid pro quo regarding Pyongyangs nuclear weapons program. ``As far as I understand, the Bush administration is unwilling to provide carrots in return for concessions by Pyongyang on its nuclear weapons, he said. ``In other words, it is non-negotiable. Washingtons tough stance was well reflected in the U.S. State Departments statement, which stated, ``The U.S. was prepared to offer economic and political steps to improve the lives of the North Korean people. ``In light of our concerns about the Norths nuclear weapons program, however, we are unable to pursue this approach, U.S. State Department Spokesman Richard Boucher said in the press release. Boucher went a step further, saying that Pyongyangs nuclear weapons development was in violation of the Oct. 1994 Agreed Framework, under which the Stalinist country agreed to freeze its nuclear activities in return for the provision of light water reactors that are less prone to producing weapons grade plutonium. Boucher quoted Pyongyang as saying that it considered the eight-year-old agreement null and void. Perhaps more damaging to President Kims pro-engagement policy than the Norths nuclear admission is the fact that Pyongyang has developed nuclear weapons even while accepting a lot of carrots offered by Seoul. The latest developments being taken into account, the security situation on the peninsula will, in all likelihood, turn from bad to worse for the time being. However, a couple of things that may hedge the worst-case scenario are Pyongyangs latest moves to open itself up, ranging from the designation of its border town of Shinuiju as an ``open city to its diplomatic offensive to normalize relations with Japan. Interestingly enough, officials in Seoul and Washington didnt elaborate under which circumstances Pyongyang told James Kelly of its nuclear weapons program. Reports had it that Pyongyang had offered Washington a very surprising deal during the U.S. envoys trip. All these developments seem to boil back down to President Kim and his last face-to-face meeting with his U.S. counterpart Bush in the APEC summit next week. The fate of Kims ``Sunshine Policy and, more importantly, the security situation on the peninsula depends on the outcome of the meeting. The odds appear against him but Kim is used to being the underdog. oh@koreatimes.co.kr --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "Donnelly, Eamonn" To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2002 17:23:57 +0100 Subject: [The_Dojang] RE: NFC Bennies Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Ray: You wrote "......This is the point of view of a 7th (or 8th?) This reminded me of the following; By way of illustrating a point, my Instructor sometimes relates a story about a student who was having difficulty generating power in his kicks. The student decided to overcome this problem by developing his leg muscles, this he apparently achieved by cycling first 5 then 10 then 20 miles each day and every day, he also added weights to his legs to make it even more gruelling. However after several weeks of cycling up hills and down dales, the student became increasing frustrated at the lack of improvement still feeling that his kicks lacked power. After relating this storey to the Class our Master asked us to consider whether we felt that the student was approaching the problem from the right direction i.e. would cycling improve his kicks or his cycling. The morale being that if someone wants to improve an aspect of their martial art, then they should perhaps concentrate on practicing that aspect of their art. Sometimes it is more productive to train intelligently rather than harder. I thought I would share this with you FWIW. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Someone (sorry---deleted the email) asked about different promotions people advertise at different points during the year. I've found that giving a discount right after a demonstration (announced during the demonstration, of course) always has a good effect. If people were interested in the first place, the thought of "I want to do it anyway, and if I start now I'll save money!" tends to stop people from putting it off. And for many people, "putting it off" often means "never quite getting around to it." So with the discount (even small), you tend to get people in who wouldn't quite ever have tried otherwise. I also offer a discount (small, but hey, it's money) to people who can pay in advance. I only charge by the month, but if people want to pay ahead, I take off 5% or 10% depending on how many months they pay. This doesn't happen too often in my school (too many poor college students) but it happens occasionally. My instructor in Denver offers a $10 discount for students who bring in other people. It isn't a whole lot, but it is nice to bring in two new students in one month, and for that month, only have to pay half price for classes. :) Thomas Nebraska Hapkido Association ------------------------------------ thomcat@binary.net hapkido.4t.com "If you aren't modeling what you are teaching then you are teaching something else." --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Thu, 17 Oct 2002 13:29:15 -0400 From: FirstPe315@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Increasing Enrollment Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 10/17/2002 5:02:50 AM Eastern Standard Time, the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net writes: Statistics indicate that in most demographics, 80% of business comes from the "Yellow Pages". I too know how it feels to be worn out. I believe I will be testing for my red belt in a month or two. Yes, it is harder as you age. Nutrition is important. However, I found supplements such as Whey Protein work well to maintain strength and energy levels. I trained so hard last week, I reinjured my knee. (a haunting injury from days back). And how did I do it, over exertion and not properly paying attention to my body's needs. That is the main key in maintaining one's self. Good luck too Next week ! My prayers will be with you! I understand completely. I love to cook and love to eat, but we must remember if we treat our body good now it'll take care of us when we need it. Me personally, I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat any meat, no dairy products etc. Not everyone wants to do that, and not everyone has to do it. I became one because I listen to what my body tells me about what I eat. When I used to eat red meat I would feel sluggish, and lazy, then on top of all that I would be forgetful, so I stopped eating red meat, and started feeling 100% better. Now as martial artist we need to understand that about 20% of the martial arts has to do with fighting. The other 80% has to do with our way of life: inner character, integrity, healing and health. For many people martial arts is something done, not lived and it should be the other way around. So with that in mind, we need to be more health conscience. Different people of different ethnic backgrounds have certain key points in health that need to be guard against. For instance, african americans tend to be at high risk for colon cancer. I believe that certain illnesses come from poor eating habits over a long period of time. For a person who eats junk food, fast food, packaged food, etc their bodies will compensate for a while but after that, it'll break down. So this is my approach to a healthy diet. I don't eat fast foods, processed foods, junk foods, etc. I eat fruits, vegetables, no sugar. My diet is high in fiber and low in saturated fats. The fast foods, and processed foods don't have very much nutrients in them so they're not doing anything but filling you up and tasting good. Refined sugar actually make more fat cells, (I think that's how that goes), ***soda puts weight on you like you wouldn't believe so I drink water.
