[specifically ribs] (Andy Settle) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Andy, Part of not getting hit is blocking (footwork, angles, circles, parrying, etc.. are part of this also). I have been teaching now for 16 years and in the martial arts for 26. 16 years ago in incorporated a drill in my school that I used coming up through the ranks. I.E. a blocking drill. Take the 9 basic blocks (a hop ki bon mak ki): Rising block Inside middle block Outside middle block Outside forearm block Low block Knife hand rising block Knife hand inside middle block Knife hand outside forearm block Knife hand low block and practice them in this order until you can easily perform the whole set. Then, practice reading "out loud" and performing the blocks--this may take some time to be able to read normally and perform the nine blocks. Once you do, the blocking becomes as natural as riding a bike. I teach this to all of my students from school age up. It worked for me over the years...just another tool.
