I have experience with scaled down programs for Hapkido for the 35-40+ age group. You see the point is that not every one have the abitity to do many thing in their mind spetially stretching and flexibility. A lot of times the kick thing is becouse they are not customed to doing things like that and they feel scared in that they might move wrong and get injured. This mainly hapens for these age group in doing jump kicks. The reason is mainly becouse they are tensed and feel aukward to do these moves but you can work 1)their confidense 2)work out their techniques braking them down in diferent steps 3)motivating them about how well it is coming along - even if it is not rightly done : you see, the point is to make shure that you can guide this person into developing their ability and you will achieve this by motivating them and opening their minds point of view. Talking about FALLS this must also be developed even and spetially is nesesary to crouch to do a roll developing these technique up to the standing position and so on up to low hops and one day to jump. Very important : Do not demotivate this person teling him that you will separate him from the group becouse he is to slow or uncapable, less that he is old ! More Important is not separate this into a separate group becouse it is degrading this groups ability. More important is to be humble enough by using your smartness and tell the more advanced group when these slower working-out group are not present that they will be with them so that this way they can make a development and a grouth in Hapkido or wich ever art it is and so they can motivate themselfs. If you need to have a spetial training and to not slow down the pase of the training than you must explain this to the less able ones and give them to a lower or less advansed student a workout delegation for him to workout with them. Executive self defense programs (Brian Beach) Message: 7 Date: Thu, 24 Oct 2002 12:59:30 -0400 From: Brian Beach To: Subject: [The_Dojang] Executive self defense programs Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Does anyone have any experience with scaled down programs for Hapkido for the 35-40+ age group. We have had some members that have expressed interest in a program that eliminates some of the more strenuous activities i.e. jumping and spinning kicks and no hands/sky falls. We also have others that fit that age group that just work to the best of their ability and seem to get along fine. In fact they seem to work a little bit harder than some of the younger students that these things come more easily. The program would be separate from the Hapkido program maybe called an executive self defense program. Has anyone tried this type of program? Any success with it? Did it add value to your school? Would the school be better served by recommending a different school to people with these requests? Thanks, Brian P.S. This is not an invitation to open up the Combat Hapkido thread. This program would be separate from the Hapkido program. -- __--__-- _____________________________________________________________ Get a web-based email for life now ---> http://mail.hapkidokr.org _____________________________________________________________ Select your own custom email address for FREE! I have to honestly admit I am now a little on the jealous side. :) One thing you may want to try is acupuncture. (I probably just opened Pandora's box). There are many styles of acupuncture, one in particular that may be helpful is Mark Seem's style of Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM). Mark is the head of Tri-State College of Acupuncture in New York City. Part of his style deals with the physical release of holding patterns associated with myofascial pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Like my girlfriend's problem came from the outside quad pulled more on the knee cap than the inside quad. this pulled the kneecap out of alignment when bending her leg. APM has a very physical approach in the fact he actaully realeases the tight and constricted muscles using acupuncture needles. It's very similar to an MD giving a dry needle trigger point injection with alot less post-teatment discomfort. So in this case releasing the outer quad may help with keeping your kneecap on track as long as there isn't alot of atrophy (muscle deterioration) of the vastus medialis (inside quad). Oh, one other point... It's cheaper than surgery! ;) Enjoy your time over here Wendy. Short sharp sound, that I time for the moment of contact. Works extremely well for diffusing the effect of holding a body shield for jump back kicks from the heavy hitters at my dojang. I've been trying to incorporate a different approach to kihap for jujutsu, as recommended by Morgan (book's name escapes me) where you growl from your belly and increase the intensity as you make the throw. I'm still really low ranked there though, so just getting the technique to work tends to distract me from working with the ki. John W. Making a weird noise is not my idea of technique. If you have good technique, accuracy, and power, what's the point? I might get "flamed" for this, but I never found the reason for a kihap. I use ki naturally. I don't yell. I just let it happen. I let it come from my danjun (sp?). I don't have to yell for that. It just kinda happens for me. I use danjun "breathing" as in breathing deep, but I don't yell. When I do kihap, I just say "hey" sharply. LOL. I have the dorkiest kihap LOL. However, I will use this as an opportunity to springboard forward with some additional points. I'm a firm believer that you will always fall to the level of your training and experience as opposed to rising to the level of your expectations. In that regard, I know that when the feces hits the fan I am not going to be able to run through the entire sequence of applicable techniques that I have ever seen, done, or heard of. To be blunt, you won't have the recall (an internal factor), and you won't have the time (external factor). So for me, I want to stock my toolbox with the tried and true as opposed to filling it up with all of the martial esoterica that I can run across. Going back to the pinching thing...again, we seem to have no shortage of anecdotes where my sister dropped me to my knees while we were grab-assing around the house, or pinching Larry the tax account in my Tuesday night adult class always seems to work, or pinching always gets the guys in my Sunday afternoon garage workouts. Yep, it works great against a non-aggressive who is not emotionally involved with the idea of ending your existence. In fact, I will even go so far as to say that pinching an aggressive attacker may be the LAST thing you want to do. I've been pinched like that before, and the effect it has on me is not to put a goofy grin on my face as I say, "Golly gee, that hurt like the dickens". In contrast, it's all I can do to keep from slapping the taste out of the pincher's mouth. I can see how such a pinch would only add fuel to my emotional fire if I were in the midst of a struggle. Now, for those that think pinching is a viable anti-grappling alternative...try this one on for size. Back in the early 90's I was lucky enough (in terms of the entertainment value) to come into contact with a self-proclaimed Grandmaster of Shorin-Ryu karate. To say that he had a unique approach to being grabbed would be an understatement. Upon being grabbed he would commence caressing the attackers face, hands, genitals, etc. while at the same time licking his lips, trying to kiss them, and calling his attacker "sweety" or "honey". Of course the idea was that the attacker would be reviled by the fact that he just grabbed hold of an apparent homosexual who is more than willing to reciprocate the physical contact on a more intimate level. I swear to God, I'm not making this up...the guy actually taught this. Of course, it never dawned on him that a person who would attack you on the street is probably not the most liberal minded of individuals, and would just escalate the violence in response to your sexual behavior. By his own admission, he had "field tested" this technique on marines that he had been contracted to train, but it didn't seem to work on them. He chalked this up to the fact that marines go through "special mental conditioning". Yeah, right. The truth is it didn't work because it's a goofy approach (or maybe these were gay marines...don't know, don't care). Again, instead of exploring or learning the tried and true methods of countering common locks and holds (which requires shedding the ego, and sweating a little) this guy tried to get "out of the box" and come up with a quick and dirty method of solving a common problem. I call this the Lazy Man's Approach to Self-Defense. Actually developing the ability to fight is too hard, so we'll fill the gap by learning to gouge, scratch, pinch, scream, empty one's bowels at will, regurgitate, swap spit, steal awareness, tell them you have Aids, and any of a million other things that are so removed from what would actually work in a fight that it's laughable. But then again what do I know. My belt hasn't turned black yet. It's just sort of a moldy green, and smells like an old tennis shoe. (Jason Starr) Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hi and be blessed Jason. When you stretch for exsample : Standing with your legs spread to your sides and go down a few repetitions to each side this will overdo the stretch. I recomend you to do only 2 movements to each side 1 as the movement and the next as the stretch. It is very important to not look at the knees but to the toes ! As an extra to help your flexibility there are a lot of schools that do partner help stretching where either standing the partner stretches your leg up pushing it or siting the partner puts his feet at your inner anckle area as grabs your wrist and then pulls you to stretch you; well these are exsercicies for people that are already stretch and whant to work out their stretch more and build resistance to pain. One must get to feel that the stretch betters for a few days and then that next day you feel that that one day it is very dificult to stretch and when this hapens I call it kiling the stretch. The recomendation I can give you for a help stretching is the one I call self-help-stretch where you sit fasing the wall and very important is to move both feet evenlly spreading them out as much as posiblewith the knees straight placing the back of your heels about a foot of the ground in the wall with your hands behind your hips on the ground and push your body doing push-ups that your chest comes to the wall looking at it at your eye sight high !
