Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Erik, Not being an expert I can only speak from the layman's view. It took me over ten years to get back into a dojang. In that ten year lay-off I put on over 100lbs. It was hard to start and the last year and a half has been both painful and gainful. The 75lb gain you talk about may be your biggest enemy, because the extra weight takes both a physical and mental toll on your body. The best advice I have is to return to the basics and build from there. As for losing the weight - don't diet, change your eating habits and watch the carbs and sugars. Tang Soo Dean Sr. ps. in the last 3 months I have lost over 30lbs by watching my carbs and sugars - it does work. :) --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Eric Walker" To: Date: Mon, 4 Nov 2002 23:53:01 -0600 Subject: [The_Dojang] breaking boards Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Is it a good idea for children under 12 to be breaking boards? I've been taught that it can be risky for the growth plates on the end of their bones. Breaking seems like it could be a good confidence builder, and I know it helps you feel what good full power technique should feel like, but is it safe for little kids? I was at a tournament recently and an awful lot of children under the age of 12 were competing in the breaking competition. They had a board holder that held only the top edge, so it looked like it was easier for most of them. Depending upon your age, you may need blood work to rule out physical contributing causes, such as hypo-thyroid. Simply put, you need to increase your amount of calorie burning exercise and to cut back on the intake. For the intake, no beer or booze, cut back on fats, and watch your carbs esp at night if you don't have opportunity to burn them off. Watch out for caffeine, as for some this gives an artificial "mouth hunger" (probably due to blood sugar levels ). With the extra wieght, be cautious about impact type exercise such as running, particularly on hard surfaces, as this can take its toll on your joints. An exercycle might be the right tool, or swimming. As far as the spirit goes - do some reading - books about martial spirit. It is time you got more into some of the whys, ethics and passions of the arts. Listen to music that gets you pumped up, and some that simply moves your soul - could be lots of different music, and a wonderful topic for conversation with all kinds of folks. Do things to inspire you in general, not merely in the context of the art. Go for some joy, passion and fire to nourish your soul. Maybe you need time away from your primary art, but try something else kindred, whether it might be arnis or fencing or something completely different. Depending upon the rapport between you and your instructor, make an appointment to discuss things, perhaps away from the dojang, over coffee. How do you achieve balance in your life or provide for creativity? You also need to do some thinking about how much and in what ways the arts have impacted your life. I feel it should have made significant impact on an adult's thinking if you made it as far as red belt. In my case, the influence is on many things, and will be until the end of my days. (thank you, GM Dr. Jung Hwan Park). For some people and some journeys, keeping a journal helps, both to put things into perspective over time, and to simply provide a record to enjoy. From what the news report said, The tourist was Camping in a local campground with his family and a strange man lured him outside his camper, striking the tourist on the head with an ax. Obviously not hard enough. The news called the German tourist "A Judo expert" killing his attacker. I don't know what technique the tourist used, my guess is a choke. But would that classify Judo as street worthy? If not for the technique but for the frame of mind it took to disarm and subdue his opponent, ANY martial artist training with the proper frame of mind and the intent for self defense WILL definitely increase his/her chances of victory. However, I feel a martial artist that trains for sport will likely not have even CLOSE to the same advantage. I feel this is mostly due to mental conditioning and not the technique itself. In sport training, without thinking, there is always the rules in the back of your mind from training. Not only have the techniques you have learned over the past 3, 7 or 10 yrs are "Action/Reaction" so will be the rules. You can say, "I just wouldn't do that in a fight" no, you use what you have trained with. The reaction that sport Martial artist will give, is quite different from a Martial artist that trains for combat situations (i.e. disarming an opponent). If you are training with an opponent screaming and coming at you with a rubber knife slashing or a bamboo stick flailing, your reactions are diverse and inventive to say the least. I feel it is not the techniques of Judo(Yudo), Taekwondo, Hapkido, Hwrangdo, that all teach street applicable techniques, will not make you victorious. Training the the mind for sport, will train you for just that. Training the mind for the street, as you would the body should tip the scales to your direction. But that's only my opinion......... Tracy Bodnarchuk 1st Dan Sin Moo Hapkido By the way from what I remember the Police let the tourist go back to Germany with no charges against him. I guess they thought it was Self defense. --__--__-- Message: 6 To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 02:45:12 -0500 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] breaking From: Westport Academy Of Taekwondo Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net I order my wood from Vision America. 1-800-538-1995. He would soon be taking a long nap! We have done multiple kicks in every martial art I've ever been around, anything else seems very ludicrous.. I would just like to let everyone know what a great opportunity they missed this past weekend at Dr. Kimm's seminar. The main focus was one the traditional korean weapons but other sessions were availible. Master Steve Kincade taught a sword form that pre-dates the MuyeeDoboTangi(the last version, late 1700's) by over 100 years. It used a double edged straight blade. I do not have the name of the form handy but I think it is called Cho Sum Sa Bub. Master Henry Chaplin led a WTF Tae Kwon Do session on kicking drills and tried to see how many of us he could get to pass out from exhaustion. He gave us the most physical workout I have ever experienced outside of a Dan test. We also had a session on cane self defense that was very interesting. Dr. Kimm's sessions focused on the Han philosophy, on what makes Han Mu Do different and on how to teach our techniques. There was also a session on ssirem, which will probably be added to our annual tournament as a competition. I would encourage everyone who has the opportunity to try to attend a Dr. Kimm seminar. I know that I am biased but I do not know anyone who has a greater knowledge of Korean martial arts or techniques. I think the next seminar will be in April, so if anyone is interested try to make plans to attend. IMHOAE, 99% of the business titles out there are only for the author to get rich. If you would like a crash course in general business, here is a list of some authors to read: Paul Hersey, Henry Blanchard, Peter Senge, Peter Block, Eli Goldratt, Tom Peters, Michael Porter, John Pearce, Elizabeth Moss Kantor and Richard Robinson. You'd be a 1000 times better off reading their original works than the millions of knock-offs you'll find in your local bookstore. An even better idea is just looking at successful businesses and seeing what they do well. That's a lot more knowledge than you'll get out of a book. I have very little knowledge about business. I am looking for programs, books etc. that will help me start my school the right way. I want to open in August of 2003.
