October 2002 Dear Members, In January of this year, our beloved Founder, Gen. Choi Hong Hi, asked me to be Senior Vice President of the ITF. In so doing he knew that if anything happened to him I would follow him as President. He also must have known what many of us knew one month later, that he was very ill. Shortly before he died in North Korea on June 15th, Gen. Choi made the statement, I have always worried about a successor to the president, however, my mind is set at ease for there is Mr. Chang Ung. I do not know why Gen. Choi made that statement and I do not know why he asked me to be Senior Vice President. One thing I do know is that when it came to the position of the presidency of the ITF, Gen. Choi always followed the ITF constitution. The special Congress in Vienna elected Gen. Choi to complete the more than 5 years remaining in the 6 year term of the Presidency which began in Rimini, Italy, in July of 2001. It is not my intention to serve as president for what remains of the 6 year term as President. There will be a Congress in Warsaw in June of 2003 and a new President will be elected at that time. A committee is now at work preparing changes to the constitution of the ITF. The changes will include, among other things, new elections in Warsaw, that the officers of each continent will be elected by that continent and that the chairpersons of the various continental committees will automatically be members of the corresponding ITF committees. The meeting held in North Korea following the memorial service for Gen. Choi on September 22, 2002, was not constitutional and therefore has no effect. I realize that Eastern and Western thinking sometimes differs, and I respect that. However, that would also apply in the IOC where the constitution is also followed. There must be order. As I have stated, it is my intention and the wish of the ITF members to whom I have spoken, that the Executive of each Continental Association be elected by the members of that Continental Association. However, that will not take effect constitutionally until June in Warsaw. Until now, it has been the practice for the President of the ITF to appoint the Continental Presidents. To keep continuity until that time, I am hereby appointing Master Wim Bos as President of Europe, to correspond to the elections that have already taken place in Europe. I know Mr. Chang Ung has had meetings with South Korea with the objective of unifying the WTF and ITF. It was a wish of Gen. Choi that the two organisations become one. However, it is necessary that the ITF not give approval to this merger until we are satisfied that our techniques will be followed and that General Choi be acknowledged as the Founder of Taekwon-Do. It would also be nice to have our students compete in the Olympic Games. This is something that Gen. Choi also wanted. What is the price for this? Will Taekwon-Do be a participating sport in the China Olympics? I appreciate Mr. Chang Ungs interest in the ITF and I have no objection to him becoming President of the ITF, if it is done in accordance with the constitution. A lot of good people have made Taekwon-Do and the ITF their lifes work. Their future cannot be jeopardized. It was a great tragedy to lose Gen. Choi. His passing has caused instability. We will not survive as an organization if we dont adhere to the constitution, that is the reason Gen. Choi had it put in place. Very best wishes Russell MacLellan President --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 12:51:17 -0500 From: Khalkee@netscape.net To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Ninja, Sulsa Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The origins of the 'Ninja' are Chinese(Lin Kuei?)/Tibetan(Trulkor?), not Japanese. Check the history. Also, the Sulsa were apparently quite real. For a Chinese connection, check out the Skills of the Vagabonds (Lin Kuei?). Re: the Sulsa, have a check out Henry TaeJoon Lee's "Predator in War, Protectors in Peace ... Korea's Legendary SULSA." It's online at the site of West Coast Hwa Rang Do. ------------------------------- The Sulsa were the elite of the Hwarang; the "Knights" of the Silla Dynasty who were sent on special missions by the King. They also protected the King and his court advisors. They were used for covert operations and assasinations. In addition to their training as Hwarang in Jung Do (conventional warfare), the Sulsa learned Amja (unconventional warfare), and Unshin Bop (the art of concealment). The Sulsa specialized in reconnaissance and other special operations. Because of these feared yet noble Sulsa and the larger elite group the Hwa Rang, Silla conquered and united the nations in 668. Through the Hwa Rang, the need for the advancement of culture was made clear. They managed to secure not only military victory, but also the promotion of art, religion, and learning. The Hwa Rang were bringers of national unity and had a profound effect on Korean culture. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. Why should the larger federation change for the smaller? A little arrogant don't you think? Also I acknowledge General Choi coined the phrase/name Tae Kwon Do, but to say he alone created it is pushing it a bit. he created the ITF system. Not the WTF system. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Helstrom, Carl" To: "'the_dojang@martialartsresource.net'" Date: Tue, 5 Nov 2002 14:11:57 -0500 Subject: [The_Dojang] Chungs Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Does anyone have a list of the various Chungs in TKD? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Randall, This sort of goes back to our chi discussion from a couple of weeks back. In short, my sister-in-law was over for dinner last night, and she starts telling me about how she had a "reconstructive healing" session with her massage therapist. Basically, my sister-in-law had to lie down on the table while the masseuse breathed heavily, and moved her hands (without touching) over various parts of my sister-in-law's body. Of course, you can guess my reaction (after I stopped laughing). I proceeded to give her my thick-headed, pseudo-intellectual lecture along the lines of, "Yeah, right...I guess she was manipulating your chi". Well, my sister-in-law didn't know what "chi" was, so I guess she wasn't given much information about what was happening during this "healing" session. >From what I could get out of her, this was something that the massage therapist learned at a seminar in Atlanta (she's going back for an additional course, BTW). Sounds to me like this has something to do with "chi manipulation". Ever heard of this "reconstructive healing" thing? Now, I'll never believe it works in a million years (that's a shock), but I was just curious if this is something that was a respected practice in some of the....ummmmm...holistic practices that are making the rounds out there. Is there such a thing as this? Is it something that Joe Blow can learn to do at a weekend seminar? Assuming for a minute that she WAS manipulating her chi, would you want just anybody doing this to you? I mean, what if she made her chi flow backwards and made her head explode (he he). Seriously, any information would be appreciated. The biggest thing is that I don't want to see my sister-in-law get ripped off. As Andrew mentioned, the last time we went I discovered that visiting relatives had filled my digital camera with pictures prior to the event. As the camera can hold more than 500 pictures you can imagine my surprise! It's getting colder here now so these clips will probably look like they were filmed during an earthquake due to my shaking and trembling... ===== Anthony Boyd: Swordsman and English Teacher www.stormpages.com/haidonggumdo ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Tue, 05 Nov 2002 16:58:31 -0500 From: bredfield Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] breaking Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net > << > Where can one go to obtain wood for breaking? > Also, normally, what is the size of board for students > under the age of twelve? Hello Steve: With a great number of good martial artists on this list, it is a good place to start. I am sure you can gain a lot of knowledge just networking with the nice folks on the DD. One thing you should get going on is developing a sound business plan well before you open the doors of your Dojang. Begin by getting a feel for the demographics of your city, decide where you want to open, and check what the potential customer base is for the type of operation you want to run (full time v/s part time, kids v/s adults only etc. etc.) As far as these extraordinary marketing techniques etc are concerned, they are good; however, they are VERY expensive for someone starting out new. A word of warning is not to overdo it with the overhead unless you have deep pockets. I'll contact you direct to share some more things with you.
