But you have to remember that they won't score a point for punching if it doesn't knock you down, or visibly faze you. What you have to do is just punch them back, as hard as you can, kind of pushing them back (but don't push them or you'll get a warning), then just kick them while they're stumbling back. Hope this helps, if you have anymore inquiries, just e-mail me. Ryan <> Dear Ryan and Laurie, I am new to Olympic Style also, and so used to hands to the head, but not used to someone standing toe to toe with me and punching my hogu. This year I have been advised that the AAU will interpret a double punch (WITH CLOSED FISTS) as a punch not a push...i.e. you can push away with both fists and then follow up. I tried this the other night as I have an adult male who used to box and doesn't like to get kicked by me. It works great, I pushed (punched) back and let looseround-kickut a 66% power roundkick that staggered him for a second :-)...This OS stuff might be fun after all.... If you get a chance to go to Jackson or the Moja Kwan Moo Do Seminar... Master Hodder showed us several ways to create space, like jump backwards back kick, punching (one hand) in such a way as to push away and set up a kick, and others... My body is not made for head height hook kicks anymore, but I've been know to spin a few headgears with my spin outside crescent :-) The other option in OS is to use a FULL power front leg side kick or either leg front kick as they are closing the gap....JKD worhythymll this a stop-hit or rythym disruption. Kusanku Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> Hi to everyone on the Dojang Digest from a cold, damp and dreary England :-). I am currently learning the Hyung, Kong San Goon and would like to learn more about it origins and history. According to GM Kang UK Lee's Book "Tang Soo Do - The ultimate guide to the Korean marial art" this hyung was devised by Ggung and Ssang Gween who lived in the Ha Nam China. I would really appreciate any advice or potential leads you may be able to provide. <> Dear Eamonn Welcome from another DD TSD player! Master Mac or Eric Madis may have more/better information, but look at any Japanese Martial Arts Organizations/Texts, and what they have to say about the origin of KusanKu. I believe the Jap version is that the form (Kata) is named after the Chinese traveler who taught/shared his system of martial arts in Japan. They say he was taken in by an old okinawin man that was at least 145 years old and only ate beef and eggs,, Dr. Atkins they say learned the eating habits from this old man and when he finished his tenure on the island he swam out to a cruise ship in the harbor climbed the side of it with his now new high protein body and wrote his first two books after this, they say he is also responsible for the creation of the meat buffet on the cruise ships,,, fact or fiction? Well ... we're talking about in -response- to the invasion of personal space, i.e., aggression, right? Initiating eye-contace in response to the invasion of one's "personal space" may push the aggressor's "stop and pick somebody else" button. In biological reality, the fixed gaze, especially with the chin lowered, is often interpreted as imminent attack -or- a "stand-down" signal. The eye-to-eye lock-on can stop something that may have otherwise started. if nothing else, it may interrupt the rhythm of the attack to the "defender's" benefit. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. The form of calcium in the coral isis not absorbed better than any other form, and there are two forms which are better absorbed than what is found in coral calcium. I don't remember but will post them when I find the names. Re: Okinawans, health & longevity ... check out "The Okinawa Plan" (also "The McDougall Plan"). Also, like Okinawa, there are many places around the world where people do not suffer the types of syndromes found in Western societies and where people historically (if not currently) enjoyed greater longevity than Westerners. In S. America, Africa, and parts of China. Example: In Africa heart disease and hypertension are unheard of until people entered the "Westernized" cities. So too, some Asians experience health problems not found in their relatives "back home" when they come to America and settle for the MacaDonaldo lifestyle. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. And, if both your hands are out just stick them up to prevent axe kicks (I don't think you have to worry about it when you're a green belt, but it will definitely be a good habit to have when you start sparring in red belt and up). __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? To address your first question, punches won't count for any points unless you knock the person down (since it's difficult for the judges to determine the effectiveness of a punch that doesn't result in a knockout). I think the point scale goes: clean kick, landing on one of the scoring areas: 1 point. Kick to the head: 2 points. Kicking someone resulting in a knockdown: 2 points. Feel free to correct me if those aren't accurate (or if they're confusing). Also, I saw you said you'll use head kick; make sure head contact is allowed in your division (usually head contact is restricted for black-tips and below), but if it is, it will probably just be light head-contact (which would be controlled, ie slow, kick to the head, so don't go all out on someone's cranium). Feel free to ask anymore questions. __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus – Powerful. Affordable.
