A physiologist, on the other hand, may know more about you than you want to know!;-) A pathologist ... well, see "physiologist" :-) Back to physiology ... understanding the mechanics of physiology is where it's at. For example: function exists in response to ancestral experience(s) and requirement(s). When these organisms of ours expereince challenges of adequate intensity and duration to cause the sympathetic nervous system to do a "mass" discharge, the absorption of all types of food by the gut is shut down ... all except one. We are designed to prefer simple sugars under extreme physical challenge ... quick refueling via fructose. The intestines will absorb fructose (fruit sugars) faster than -anything- else when the physiological state is characterized by heavy work load and sympathetic activation. So, all diet nonsense flies out the window in the face of what evolution has determined ... unless one's religion doesn't allow evolutionary interpretations ... but then, that might drive the point home in a different way ... heh-heh, the differential absorption rate of fructose is divinely-determined. ... and remember, CHOs both simple [fructose] and complex [starches] go through a comparatively uncomplicated burn to yield CO2 and H2O. Try downing that steak in the middle of a marathon ... it might get wasted. If you really want to understand how the body operates and what its requirements are in the way of nutrition, study physics, chemistry, anatomy & physiology, then physiological chemistry. It's the physiological chemistry that'll "enlighten" ... but understanding of the other stuff as the "basics" needs to be in place to really "get it". Be well. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. The standard meal included a Baked Potato so I ordered mine LOADED and skimmed off all the high fat cream, butter, bacon, cheese and about 1/4" of Potato in the process....yes that was delicious :-) P.S. I'm thinking about getting Tae Yun Kim's Inner Strength book to compare with Chuck Norris' anyone on list care to give a book review? Be Well, Charles R. I really don't care what you eat. In fact, I had a 3 egg sandwich for breakfast. The eggs were from (not literally) a kid down the street who raises contented chickens for egg money and the bread was wheat bread. However, are you only running those 12 miles on the weekend? And why? Why run so far; don't you know what running that distance is doing to your body? But anyway, back to the diet issue. Personally, if I wanted to lose weight fast, I start with the Atkins diet, but then switch to a more moderate plan for long-term use. Since you follow the Atkins diet what are the results of that entire town in Louisiana that went on the plan? I never heard what happened. It was quite a few years ago. You did touch on an important issue and one that we discussed in Asian Nutrition class. That is your attitude. Sounds kinda strange but if you really appreciate your food and you are optimistic about what it is doing, you can't go too wrong. Here's an example; two people can eat a big bowl of Blue Bell ice cream and their body can receive it differently. If you are happy with your bowl and feel that a little of what you desire will do you good, you will digest it well. If you think that it will clog your arteries and is bad for you, it will be. Sorta like Zen eating! "Eating a 'perfect' diet is no guarantee of being fully nourished, as belief and feelings, physical tension and underfunctioning organs can obstruct the receiving of nourishment." In the West, our relationship with food is based on emotional, not nutritional needs. That's why the "diet pill" industry is so big. In Asian Medicine, each person's uniqueness, and therefore differing needs are recognized. Just a few more points: >IMHO,,, nutritionist=== someone who has read a few books and can't really understand who or what I am. I'd rather consult a shaman or vodoo priest at least they'll probably have some chicken laying around.> Depends on your definition of a nutritionist. The Registered Dietians in the hospital (the one I work with is slim!) have degrees with a heck of a lot of chemistry of food background. The people doing the 25 year study of the Okinawians did, however, meet with local shamans. >Okinawins eat an overabundance of fish=== guess what guys, fish is one of the purest sources of protein around,,, if you eat a ton of fish then you are eating a high protein diet!!!!> Their diet is mostly plant-based, low calorie, and high in unrefined carbs. Their health however, is not just the results of their diet. The study was a study on aging, the Okinaw Centenarian Study, and not just about diet. >This is the best I've felt in 20 years and know one can convince me otherwise that I am hurting myself,, I know better and so does my doctor who told me to keep doing EXACTLY what I am.> Then you are right! Michael Tomlinson (back from my run and grilling steaks an cutting up some salad!!} Did you wait 1-2 hours after running before you ate; you'll burn up more fat that way. And also, all your diet comments may be negated by the fact that you run so much, if that is in fact what you do. He was 75. Born in 1927 in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, Lee received only an elementary school education during the Japanese occupation, but over the years he envisaged and fostered a crusade to restore the Korean national spirit. After the 1945 national liberation, he moved to Seoul and ran a secondhand bookshop. From that time one, he amassed an extensive number of rare documents and old atlases on Korea and taught himself about Korea's tumultuous modern history, in particular. Crisscrossing private and public museums in Korea and Japan, Lee discovered a wealth of historical documents from the two countries that support Korea's territorial claim over Dok-do Island, a group of rocky islets on the East Sea. In 1997, he donated his lifetime collection on Dok-do and assumed the directorial post the Dok-do Historical Museum, which was established on the nearby Ulleung Island at the investment of a private foundation. His other collections were donated to the Independence Hall, the Memorial Hall for Donghak Peasant Uprising and the Hyeonchungsa Shrine for Admiral Yi Sun-sin. His remains will be cremated and scattered in the sea around Dok-do, said family members. Lee is survived by his wife and daughter. khjack@koreaherald.co.kr --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
