I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white, But I fought the temptation with all of my might. Tossing and turning with anticipation, The thought of a snack became infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore. I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, 'Til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky, With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie. But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees.... Happy eating to all, pass the cranberries, please. May your stuffing be tasty, your turkey be plump. Your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump. May your yams be delicious, your pies take the prize. May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your thighs Hope you have a wonderful holiday! Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Peter C: Over the years I (as I'm sure many of us have been there) was part of the Bruce Lee craze, but as I grow older, I take a more educated and respectful look at his life. Does anyone think that this could be a contributing factor in the later years of Bruce Lee? As his popularity and screen success grew, he continued and seemed to increase his physical development, do you think he became more driven twords those areas and less on the healthier aspects of life and the martial arts? In Mark Seem's book "Bodymind Energetics," he discusses in-depth how the mind (beliefs and feelings) can play an integral role in the presentation of diseases of the body. Damn, I sound like a Mark Seem commercial! ;) Take care. It takes about that much time for the concentration of cholecystokinin to have its effect in the brain which results in "satiety" and inhibits further feeding. >digest a meal, but belief and feelings cannot change physiology.> > >Oh, man you are so wrong...there is so much literature which suggests a >different opinion. Beliefs and feelings are one of the main reasons for many >diseases. All you psychologists feel free to take over here. OK (Behavioral Medicine, Health Pysch here ... 1st dissertation = "Biobehavioral Differences btwn Normotensive and Borderline Hypertensive Americans" :-) Beliefs and feelings -can- play a role in -some- disease processes ... but it is false to say that this is true of -many-.  Stress is over-rated as a disease cause.  Prolonged and/or time-dense repeated distress which impacts a weak organ or organ system is the crux of that biscuit.  On the flip side is the existence, or lack thereof, of coping strategies in the "subject".  Different personality dynamics cna yield different disease -potentials-, e.g., peopel who don't feel good about themselves -may- be more prone to cancers ... and people who repress hostility -may- be more prone to cardiovascular disease.  We called this the Sunday Rule:  On Sundays we can find two reliable populations in America ... one goes to church, the other stays home and watches NFL while drinking beer, etc.  The church group has the highest incidence of cancer.  The NFL group has the highest incidence of heart attacks. Just the facts hermano. These things are not as simple as some would have us believe (oops, there's that word again).  Further example:  there are stress dynamics which vary with ethnicity, gender, place, and "mood" and may boggle your imagination ... and which are reliable finds regardless of what the subjects 'believe' about themselves, the situation, or objective interpretation of findings.  Examining blood pressure as a function of ethnicity, gender, place, and mood ... measures of BP for Euro males and Afro females were alike ... measures of BP for Euro females and Afro males were alike.  This reflects the dynamics of sociocultural factors and has suggestions for the varying incidence of some diseases in these groups ... the beliefs of the subjects were irrelevant.  Not so simple ... the average Afro-American has 50% Euro ancestry (or "genetic admixture" as some like to call it :-) Here's a goodie:  If you know someone who has or has had cancer, the single most important thing that you can do to help them change their outcomes is to encourage them to do things that help them to feel good about themselves.  Of ALL factors examined related to survival, this was #1.  Numero Uno Baby.  Like PMA ... but atttitude has to be paired with something real, i.e., we can have all the attitude that we want (like my son who at 28 wanted to kick my arse but got a compassionate spanking instead) but it has to be conencte with something that we can view objectively.  Something real, substantial, measurable, repeatable.  This yields certainty, not belief, and goes much further in the way of cultivating PMA.  It's the difference btwn "Yes I can" and "Yes I think I can".  It's the difference btwn imagination and reality.  Yes, thoughts, moods, attitudes, and "beliefs" can impact health outcomes, but they are not the sole or major determinants.  WE can feel real good about ourselves and be placed in situations which manipulate our psyches such that we break.  What makes the difference btwn POWs, for example, can be as simple as physical behaviors which allow them to experience some control over their environment.  They may not know what to think or believe about themselves after a while, but if they can do something to reliably manipulate or control their environment, their chances of survival are better.  OTOH, if you want to "break" a fighter, put him/her into a situation where s/he will experience a predictable impulse to fight ... but make fighting an unavailable option.  That's all that it takes.  Regardless of what the fighter believes, s/he is more likely to break in such a situation ... one way or another, e.g., if the fight impulse is expressed s/he will lose by the structure of the situation, PMA or no.  Some things understood in behavioral science ain't so nice, 'ey?:-)  The sciences of learning (incl. cognition and conditioning) and physiological psych are reliable, repeatable, verifiable, established in certainty.  Some areas of 'psychology' are pseudoscience ... unreliable, not repeatable, not verifiable, akin to belief. OK, I digress. Scholar-Warrior. Kunja. Pil Sung! __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available.
