He will be in Jackson this March as one of the teachers. The dojang is at 4/1 Field Close in Morebank 612-98242999. His website is at http://hapkido.netro.com.au Jere R. James Morgan GTKDA www.gtkda.com --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Tue, 03 Dec 2002 08:39:25 -0600 Subject: Re: [The_Dojang] Sparring drills From: Richard Zaruba To: Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The sparring drills we use consist of a minimum of three strikes and kicks, instead of the one block and one punch variety and are done back and forth to work both offense and defensive skills. The white belts all start out with the same three, one-two-front kick, backfist-reverse punch-side kick, and backfist-hook punch-round kick. At first targets are assigned for each strike and the person defending works on blocking, then when the combo is finished the defending person becomes the attacker and counter attacks with the same combo. This simple drill allows the person to become familiar with blocking a real strike or kick, counter attacking immediately, and always using combos as opposed to just throwing one technique. The combos that they are using also introduces several other ideas such as covering hip rotation for rear leg kicks. Next step is to mix the combos so the first person throws the one-two-front kick, which is countered with backfist-reverse punch-side kick, which is then countered with backfist-hook punch-round kick, which is countered with one-two-front kick, and so on. As student progress the speed increases and they are allowed to vary targets with the strikes and kicks. You can integrate footwork and distancing drills, use different combos, and so on. The way I usually run a beginning level sparring class is warm up, practice the combos solo and footwork drills, go back and forth with combos, go back and forth with combos and add footwork drills, link combos for back forth with foot work drills. It is a simple approach and system taught to me about twenty years ago, but it builds coordination, rhythm, understanding of distance, endurance, and awareness as well as offensive and defensive skills in a controlled situation which is both instructive and challenging. This has worked with students who are afraid of sparring by allowing it to take on a controlled atmosphere as opposed to the blood and guts approach seen in the movies. The most important key to using it is the control of the speed starting slow and gradually increasing during the class as well as over time. Also as speed increases someone will throw the wrong strike or kick and their partner will be required to defend against it. This adds an element of the unknown as the speed increases and keeps the students progressing toward regular sparring. I add different combos and drills for different aspects as the students progress. That is about it. Sorry for the long winded response. He has been self appointed as the grand master of a spin off organization. It was edited and co-written by kuk sa nim as well back when his brother was an active member in kuk sool. There's not something you can print out with the individual moves, but they have videos of people doing the forms, so you should be able to pick up any moves that you need from there. We normally use an 1.25" diameter hardwood bong, doing a variety of spinning techniques. It is also very beneficial for flexibility. I myself would not call this a "spin off" of WKSA and ASSUME (again) neither do too many others here on the DD, please correct me if I am stating that in error. It is my understanding (pls correct me if I am wrong) the Kido Hae governs approximately 90% of all Korean Martial Arts. As the WKSA only governs KSW, I do not see how the Kido Hae could ever be considered a "spin off" of WKSA. Unfortunately your instructors knowledge of Grand Master In Sun Seo is limited to his instructor the WKSA and In Huk Suh. (But, please tell him it has been nice to see him on such a regular basis over the last 5 months.)
