Looks like I will have to spend a few more bucks to put my video on the computer, maybe Santa Clause can help me out. Also, I look forward to working on the stone. I have always been a big supporter of making your own stuff, or spending time customizing things for yourself ( for example, I make some of my students sand down the finish on their wooden weapons and add their own stain or finish, gives them something to be proud of), so I don't know why I didn't think of making my own stone. What all could/Should be included? I will be using it primarily for test certificates, (and white belts foreheads when they are bad.) I figured my name, rank, style, and school name, but that would probably be a large stamp. who knows...any suggestions? Does anyone know if Tang Soo Do players (MKD and others) have ever worn any other kind of top besides the full trimmed top? or When did this tradition start and/or why? I was always told the Midnight blue trim related to the uniform of royal palace guards Now, the reason I ask this question. This year the AAU has decided to allow black trim at Regional and National events, however it is collar/lapel only. There are many TKD styles that use black trim around the olympic style tops for Dans and the ATA uses lapel trim for Dan's also, but this still seems to exclude the ITF and MDK folks from wearing their traditional uniforms....yes BTW the rule says Black trim so midnight blue trim would be excluded. You can get some grip putty at most large sporting goods stores. I think most of it is priced well under $10, and I've gotten fair results from using it in the past. An even more cost effective method for the "el cheapos" out there (like me) is to just get a large wash rag or dish towel and wet it down in your kitchen sink. Then just wad it up and repeatedly squeeze it with one hand until you can't wring anymore water out of it. Then soak it down again and try the other hand. Sounds simple and goofy, but you'll be surprised at the results. Not something to be done every day. Once or twice a week should suffice unless your goal is to look like Popeye. I've got a homemade "wrist roller" that I made from part of an old rattan escrima stick, a length of rope, and a dumbbell. I only had to buy the rope since I had the other stuff already, and I think the rope was well under $10. Again, I've gotten good results from using it, and all it took was a few bucks and a little creativity. Speaking of ropes, climbing them is one of the very best things for grip strength not to mention overall strength and power in the upper body. Yes, it requires a little space and equipment, but there are few things that get the job done better. Escrima/arnis/kali stickwork is great for the grip, wrists, and forearm. For me, working "abaniko" and "watik" strikes always had a profound strengthening and conditioning effect on my wrists and forearms. Also, striking the heavy bag with the sticks with a high level of intensity and power also put a lot of stress on this area and resulted in an increase in both grip strength and stamina. Look into that. I was always told that fingertip pushups were good for the grip. Maybe...maybe not. In my case, they were always really excellent for producing aching fingers. IMHO, the best way to condition the wrists for impact is to...well...expose them to impact. Work the heavy bag with progressive resistance. There's a million auxiliary exercises you can do to condition the wrists for impact (wrist roller, wrist curls, knuckle pushups, etc.), but ultimately the best way to condition the body for a specific activity is to expose it to that specific activity. This is much in the same way that sprinters use weight lifting and plyometric drills to augment their conditioning, but the majority of their active training routine centers around exactly what they do...running. --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Wed, 04 Dec 2002 16:06:42 -0500 From: FirstPe315@aol.com To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] Taeguek Forms Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 12/3/2002 6:01:50 AM Eastern Standard Time, the_dojang-request@martialartsresource.net writes: > Does anyone know where to find outlines of the steps to the Taeguk > forms(WTF)? Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Hey Kat, "spin off": to derive from something larger I'm going to ASSUME that anyone who reaches the rank of Chiefmaster is part of a group. And I'm also ASSUMING that if you leave that group and still teach that art unofficially in whole or in part that you have "spun off" regardless of how big you have grown in time or how many arts you have compiled since the separation from that group. I'm ASSUMING that his kuk sool is unofficial since it is not recognized by WKSA nor is he on the list of WKSA accredited masters, teachers, etc... (I'm also ASSUMING that he teaches kuk sool from the picture of him in front of his Fremont, Calif. headquarters on his website) I see nothing wrong with spin offs as long as it is not just a watered down version to add to your list of accreditation's. However, you know as well as I do that there are a lot of "spin offs" in MA some legitimate, some not. But after checking out his website he seems very legit. Please respond if have made any incorrect ASSUMPTIONS here. No comment on the last line. One is to grab the air with both hands as tightly and as fast as you can for at least 100 times. Wind up with fists tight and forearm muscles straining. I also use a big rubber band (can also use dumbell) with forearm lying on top of thigh and curling the wrist up. Then I rotate wrist to get all four "sides." There's also an ancient technique caled "spanking the monkey." The President of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) and the President of the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) met in USA to discuss their mutual interests in Taekwon-Do. The ITF President, Mr. Chang Ung was visiting USA to attend the General Assembly of International Sports Federation (GAISF) Congress. Upon his arrival at the airport, Mr. Chang Ung was warmly welcomed by many American Taekwon-Do practitioners. On November 22, 2002, the President of the ITF, Mr. Chang Ung met the President of the WTF, Dr. Un Yong Kim at the Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs, USA. Others in attendance at this historical meeting were Grand Master Hwang Kwang Sung, the acting ITF Secretary General, Master Phap Lu, the ITF Deputy Secretary General Planning, Master Ri Yong Sok, the ITF Chairman of the Technical Committee, Mr. Ri Yong Son, the Deputy Secretary of General Administration and Mr. Lee Kum Hong, the WTF Secretary General. This historical meeting was very friendly and positive. Mr. Chang Ung had a frank discussion with Dr. Un Yong Kim. Both the ITF President and the WTF President talked positively about the mutual goals of the two Federations and the participation of ITF in the Olympic Games. Both Presidents agreed the two federations should seek a way to get the ITF into the Olympic Games, by which they would set up a Coordination Committee. The two Federations are looking to form this Committee in February 2003. The Committee will consist of Co-Chairmen and members. They will deal with their external relationship, technical issues, mutual goals of the two Taekwon-Dos and their participation in the Olympic Games. The two Presidents also talked about the International Martial Art Games Committee (IMGC), a dream of General Choi, that looks like it will become a reality. The GAISF Council announced and appointed a new Martial Arts Commission Committee. GAISF President, Dr. Un Yong Kim, recommended Mr. Chang Ung, the President of the IMGC, as the Chairman of this committee. The appointment will be announced next January 2003. At the next GAISF Congress, the Council will announce the memberships acceptance of the IMGC. Furthermore, a delegation of the IMGC will be invited again by the GAISF to attend the next GAISF Congress to be held in Spain. The invited delegation of the IMGC consists of the following members: Mr. Chang Ung, the IMGC President, Mr. Mac Harb, the IMGC Chairman and a Member of the Canadian Parliament, Master Ri Yong Sok, member of the IMGC, Master Phap Lu, IMGC Deputy Secretary General, Mr. Ri Yong Son, IMGC President Assistant and Mr. Choe Myong Chol, IMGC Member. --__--__-- Message: 15 From: Ray Terry To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net (The_Dojang) Date: Wed, 4 Dec 2002 22:36:03 -0800 (PST) Subject: [The_Dojang] more ITF Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net To : Members of ITF >From : Grand Master Hwang, Kwang Sung Acting General Secretary of ITF Date : November 25, 2002 003-02 Dear Members of ITF, It is my intention to inform of the progress of ITF. 1) Last week on November 20-24, 2002, our President Mr. Chang Ung was invited to the GAISF meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. This initiates the preparation for ITF participation of the Olympic Games of 2004. He also had a meeting with the President of WTF, Mr. Kim Un Yong, agreeing to further the TKD meetings. This will be done between end of February and beginning of March of next year. 2) On November 16, 2002, the Board of Directors held a meeting at the headquarters of the ITF in Vienna, Austria in which they resolved to expel Mr. Tom MacCallum from the ITF for immoral behaviour and violation of the Austrian law. His actions are as follows: a) Mr. Tom MacCallum transferred USD 60,000.00 from ITF account to his personal account on September 25, 2002 without the consent of the ITF. He later retransferred USD 30,515.00 to the ITF account on November 8, 2002 under the orders of the Austrian attorney. He spent over USD 13,736.00 under the ITF account after General Choi Hong Hi passed away through October 6, 2002 for his personal advantages. b) He spent over USD 4,063.00 in his stay in Mongolia at the Genghis Gann Luxury Hotel. c) He has borrowed from ITF, USD 35,000.00 to invest in his personal business. He has not paid back ITF. d) He has taken the seal of ITF to his house and has unlawfully established himself as the General Secretary. e) He has given USD 16,000.00 to Mr. Russell MacLellan without ITF consent. f) He is being processed by the Austrian Law and police for these matters. 3) We would like to draw attention to the following issues of conduct that may be deemed to be ethically incorrect. These conducts are attributable to Mr. Russell MacLellan who was acting president as of July 6, 2002 to September 22, 2002. Mr. Russell MacLellans case will be formally notified to the ethics committee of his party in Canada and the Bar Association of Nova Scotia. a) On July 6, 2002, in Toronto, Canada when Mr. MacLellan was presiding the Consultative Council meeting, Mr. Tom McCallum suggested to the Consultative Council members that the International Taekwon-Do Federation could save tax money by classifying black belt certificate fees to a different tax category as membership fees, thus evading responsibilities to the Austrian government. After hearing Mr. McCallums suggestion, Mr. MacLellan corroborated that it was a good idea, thus jeopardizing the ITFs reputation and diminishing the good will associated with the Federation which is highly regarded worldwide. b) On that same meeting, Grand Master Hwang suggested that the salary of the acting president should be discussed. His suggestion was disregarded. On August 22, 2002, Mr. McCallum took Italys black belt certificate fees of USD $8,000.00 in cash and did not put it into the ITF accounting. Mr. Russell MacLellan, then acting president, took that money of USD $8,000.00 dollars in cash from Master McCallum for his personal use. As of November 16, 2002, Mr. Russell MacLellan has taken from ITF, USD 8,000.00 more for his personal use without ITF consent, thus totalling USD $16,000.00. c) On July 20, 2002, General Choi Hong His testimony was published in the website which Mr. MacLellan deleted part of the testimony in this way omitting two lines in his testimony, thus changing General Choi Hong His will. Mr. Russell MacLellan also has deleted the word President in the ITF black belt certificates and has put the word Founder, without consent of Mrs. Choi Hong Hi, thus unlawfully manipulating Mrs. Choi Hong Hi's copyright. d) On November 15, 2002, in Vienna Austria, Mr. Russell MacLellan manifested his discontent to Mr. MacCallums behaviour and that he no longer wanted to fight for the presidency of ITF. He wanted to negotiate Mr. MacCallums salary after being expelled from ITF. He did not attend the Board of Directors meeting the next day. On November 19, 2002, Mr. Russell MacLellan sent a letter in General Choi Hong His website signing himself as president, showing in this way that his decisions do not adhere to the morality of the ITF. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ The_Dojang mailing list The_Dojang@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/the_dojang http://the-dojang.net It's a great day for Taekwondo!
