Yours in the Martial Arts, Charlie Veuleman" hi charlie... from what i understand, a "tojang" should be square if it is for an organization or company and round if its a personal tojang. you might want to make one for your school and one with your name. the more work, the more for you to be proud of, right? lol ;) take care, melinda Chajonshim Martial Arts Academy http://www.cjmaa.com Chajonshim Martial Arts Supply http://www.cjmas.com Toll Free: 1-877-847-4072 Proud Sponsor of the 2003 Annual Show Me State Open Martial Arts Tournament --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Fri, 6 Dec 2002 05:43:19 -0800 (PST) From: Charles Richards To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] DoBohk Trim Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net <> I don't know when the practice of trimmed tops started, but it was already a long established tradition by 1973 when I first began training. <> Master Dunn, I have received the same info from KJN Shin, Jae Chul. And looking at some pictures I've seen dating back to the 1960's, the instructors had the black trim tops, so I would say it's a MDK & TSD tradition, but like many traditions, the origin is unknown. So I guess if anyone on list sees me at AAU events this year I'll be half TSD, ATA lookin with my lapel only trim as I can't see doing Tang Soo Do in a WTF V-neck Top. Funny how we get attatched to traditions, neh? Charles Richards Moja Kwan TangSooDo __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. Barnes" Subject: [The_Dojang] Taeguk forms Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net The best free videos that I've found are within the Korean language section of koreataekwondo.org: http://www.koreataekwondo.org/ency/ency5_1.htm carbonecho.com has pretty good video too. They are currently updating their site (no content can be reached). The book "Taekwondo: The State of the Art" is one of the best TKD books around in my opinion. It is especially strong in documenting the poomse: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0767902149/qid%3D1039183246/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-1802746-2781429 Turtle Press has DVD and VHS poomse videos. I received the DVD yesterday, so I don't have much experience with them yet. They show the form in normal speed, slow motion and from front and side views. There was a production mix-up with the first form for a couple of the views (second poomse displayed instead), but overall, I think they will be an excellent addition to my growing library. I need to practice at home to have any chance of remembering poomse for some reason. Sad but true. After all, I only have so many boring stories to tell you folks... :) When I switched from TSD to TKD MDK in 1976 (moved towns), green belts had to trim their dobok top in green, red belts in red, and black belts in black. Blue belts may have also trimmed, but I just can't recall now. Later on it got a little looser and only the red and black belts worn trimmed uniforms (at that dojang). Why do I bring this up? Just that obviously in the 20 years previous (mid 1950s to mid 1970s) the use of trimmed uniforms had become very well entrenched into MDK systems. The next one in the series would be 27648 (4^4 x 3^3 x 2^2 x 1^1), which isn't a very friendly number. In the art, the hanboks/doboks (I'm not clear which) displayed a midnight blue trim. From that, I have heard, Hwang Kee decided on the dobok trimming. There may be some truth to this, as the hanbok I own has a wonderful midnight trim. Unfortunately, with Hwang Kee's passing, he is not available to ask.
