Garland Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Guess I'll have to check the issue out at the magazine rack. Had a very interesting phone call from C. Garland a couple years ago, telling me I wasn't really in the KHF. ????? Same phone call he threatened me and a few other Hapkidoin. Have not heard or thought of him since then, but seeing his name has me curious to the article. Will have to check it out. Spin kicks in Jang Mu Won are taught in both directions, and our GM, Chong S. Kim, is a contemporary of GM Ji, and studied with the same Tae Kyon instructor. >Gm Ji's approach to spin kicks is that they should only be done in a clockwise direction, not in a counterclockwise direction.< Getting in the Way, Patrick _________________________________________________________________ Tired of spam? I have a quick question about the Korean language that I have been meaning to ask about for quite a while. I have noticed people referring to Hapkido practitioners as Hapkidoin. Does -in as a suffix mean "practioner of?" Is this similar to the Japanese -ka? Also, can a practitioner of other Korean arts be called, for instance a Taekwondoin or a Tangsoodoin? Second question. I am going to be studying abroad next semester in Graz, Austria. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good martial arts schools in that area. I will be there for 6 months, and I would hate to let my martial arts trainign go for that long. If anyone knows anything, please let me know. Thanks, Kent --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "J.R. How does ANYONE know what's been taught outside of Korea, or who it's been taught to. Hey guys, get on the mat and do it and let everyone judge you according to what they see and leave the bull manipulating to the rodeo folks. J. R. Against taller kicker when you yourself are not a high kicker? Let them chase, stop quickly, shuffle side kick. You said no punching. I assume that blocking hard is OK. Against rear round kick (open stance), or front round kick (closed stance); block the kicking leg hard with double forearm block, immediately spin kick to torso. Try repetitive, aggressive, fast, non-stop, front leg front or round kick (if they switch stance, you do too). CAREFUL! Duck the kick and counter (keep your hands up to protect your head as you duck). Good luck ;-) ///// (o)-(o) ---ooO---(_)---Ooo-------------------------- Miguel http://garciatkd.com [if you can't beat your computer at chess. try kickboxing] --__--__-- Message: 6 From: FirstPe315@aol.com Date: Wed, 11 Dec 2002 23:17:50 EST To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Subject: [The_Dojang] GM Ji's article. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Let me preface my brief statement by first stating that GM Ji has to be respected for his time in Hapkido and martial-arts in general. However....after Choi, Yong Sool's death, many an individual, GM Ji the most prominent, made a variety of claims that contradict the founders. Prior to his death, Choi, Yong Sool and Suh, Bok Sub made many remarks regarding the efficacy of GM Ji's statements and allegations. Who do we believe? The arrogance in which he makes his claims tends to help me to side with the founder and his original student. Chris Garland basically sounds like an arrogant @#$% to me. I think the whole thing is kind of amusing. In regards to the experience you had Ray, perhaps there is more going on behind the scenes than appears. Isn't there always. We can't forget one other possibility, perhaps GM Ji is getting forgetful and beginning to show signs of aging. Who knows. I could consult magazines, websites or other publications for an organizations offical answer, but I want to know what the instructors observe. What do you see that differentiates your style from others when at an open tournament or when visiting studios? I'm not looking for a "my style is best" answer, but rather "my style is unique.." Some of the interview sounded like his words, some did not. Make of that what you will. > However....after Choi, Yong Sool's death, many an individual, GM Ji the most > prominent, made a variety of claims that contradict the founders. Gm Choi died about 1986, yes? Gm Ji made his claims, as you put it, well prior to 1986. If Gm Choi's Yawara is Hapkido to you, so be it. Whatever you want to term it, it is indeed a fine and effective art.
