While visiting a KATU school, Master Hwang, speaking of his experience with General Choi Hong Hi, said that in ITF there are over 3,000 techniques... >From your experience, in your training, sparring, self defense, etc. How many techniques do you teach and how many are subsequently used. If your fighting somebody who really knows what they're doing, chambering your kick in that manner is only telegraphing what your doing. You wont hit anybody with it who is skilled at reading and reacing to telegraphic strikes and kicks. The quickest point of any punch or kick is from A to B... Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Does anyone know of any good martial arts clip art collections out on the web? Maybe even one I could buy and download, I have done a little searching and most of what I have found is cartoon-ish or too stylized. I need to make an add and some different fliers, and I sure could use some art. Charles, What took so long to get started? :-) I figure if baby's are kicking in the womb, you might as well get them started and teach them to kick right. (I'm sure all the ladies on the list think that is just a grand idea and are thinking - he needs to be pregnant for about 9 years and see what he thinks then) Seriously, that is great and with your guidance I expect to see Niko develop into one heck of a martial artist, both physically and in character development. Sincerely, Rudy Excellent post - so very true! Worth reading again. OTOH I have broken the ribs of someone who outweighed me by 75 pounds using a sliding lead-leg side kick with arcing trajectory ... trained originally from sole of foot facing target, i.e., fully chambered N. Chinese/Korean style. We trained to draw the knee of the kicking leg towards the shoulder. __________________________________________________________________ The NEW Netscape 7.0 browser is now available. While my legs have gained a lot of strength I've sacrificed flexibility. I'm writing to ask if anyone else on the list includes weight training in there MA training. To regain my flexibility am I going to have to quit my lower body weight training or can I regain my flexibility by adding a lot of stretching before and after weight lifting? I use the Body-for-Life weight training program which has me doing lower body workouts 1 to 2 times a week for about 45 minutes each workout. I also run (erm,... jog actually but I like to think I'm running) around 2 miles a day and ride the stationary bike 20 minutes a day at least 5 days a week. I am 5'11" and weigh 215lbs with a body mass index of 31.74 Thank You all for any help or suggestions. Reply-To: the_dojang@martialartsresource.net Dear Dojang Digest: I'll be in the Maitland/Winterpark (Orlando) area for a month, and I'd like to stop by a dojang in the area to see how others train. I am a 5th gup WTF TKD practitioner, and I live in Monterrey, Mexico. I'm really interested in seeing how people in other places train. Please let me know! Also, I'd like to ask if you have any recommendations about the best TKD uniforms... What brand is better? Is there a real difference between one or the other? We wear the v-neck style dobok at my school. Thanks for your help in these matters! Sincerely, Barbara Mendez __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I've learned forms through to Kwang-Gae and to my knowledge they would all be "piercing" side kicks, correct? Is the thrusting kick considered particularly advanced? John Wallace I Dan, TKD Fremont, CA<< You are correct, all side kicks in the patterns through Kwang-Gae are side piercing kicks. The ONLY tul I'm aware of that has a side thrusting kick is Moon-Moo, which is the last 4th dan pattern you learn. Maybe there are more in the 5th and 6th dan patterns, but I don't know those ones yet. Despite this fact I don't think a side thrusting kick is particularly "advanced" compared to a side piercing kick. In fact, I think it's harder to do a technically correct piercing kick, with the proper chambering, twisting of the foot, etc. Moon-Moo is also the first time you get a side pushing kick, too. So why don't side thrusting kicks show up until that advanced a pattern? I have no idea. Of course, you don't get reverse turning kicks until Eui-Am, which is a 2nd dan pattern even though they're introduced to color belts (usually between green and blue belts).
